  1. Does anyone here like this band? They've been recommended to me as a band I'd like. The last time this happened, I fell madly in love with The Mendoza Line. Will the same happen with Grand Champeen? Which of their 3 albums should I start with (if they're worth listening to at all, of course)?

I'd start with The One That Brought You. It has some of their best full-on rockers--"The Good Slot," "Paid Vacation," etc. The other two are certainly worth picking up but this one is hands down the best.

  2. The new Decemberists cd is really amazing.

    Agree/Disagree

Disagree! Where is my charming little literate folk band? The prog-rock stuff just doesn't work for me, and a couple of the folksier songs, which are usually Meloy's bread and butter, just didn't do it for me, either. One of the first softer songs (I don't have the tracklisting handy) seemed about two lesbians away from an indigo girls song. I heard maybe three or four songs I liked.

  3. This should be good, as I am not a big fan of a lot of Willie's work (apart from Shotgun Willie, Phases And Stages and Red Headed Stranger) mainly because the production is pretty shody, and this will overcome that issue.

You need to get The Troublemaker and Yesterday's Wine ASAP. I'm worried about this collaboration, though. It could be great, but Ryan Adams and great production don't go hand in hand. I mean, Gold is basically the best Mellencamp album of the oughts. Hopefully, it will be closer to Heartbreaker or Jacksonville City Nights.

  4. What is the name of the box set??

    LouieB

I believe it's called Texas Troubadour, but I could be wrong. I found it for $25 at a Virgin once and snagged it. Best $25 I ever spent. Live at the Old Quarter is simply without compare though. The new Live at Union Chapel, London, England is good, too. Live Townes is definitely the way to go for a newbie. His stories and jokes are part of the charm.

P.S. I think my favorite Townes song right now is "Don't You Take It Too Bad"

  5. LOVE it...

i wasn't so big on What Comes After The Blues honestly... at least not compared to the versions of a few songs that appeared on the Trials & Errors live record (Dark Don't Hide It especially is weak compared to the live one)

i really love the solo one too, which surprises me a bit, as i was never the biggest fan of the more stripped Songs:Ohia stuff always, and that it was being compared to his Pyramid Electric Co. record.

What Comes After The Blues grew on me immensely and now I love it. I think I love Fading Trails too, although I wish they would issue all the seperate sessions instead (Nashville Moon, Sun Sessions, etc.)

  6. thing is, Midlake aren't really that "hyped"

a few bloggers and forum posters who really love the record != hype necessarily

now if Pitchfork gave it like a 9.x, etc, sure, but they don't deserve to be called overly hyped, as they have not been.

along w/ them, Sound Team & Voxtrot, and i'm sure others, Texas is definitely putting out some of the best music around this year imo. i'm sure you being from there, it's no different than me replying to people about Tapes N' Tapes, as while good, they're def not the best band out of the Twin Cities right now by any means either.

Yeah. I don't like Sound Team or Voxtrot, either. To each his own, I guess. I do agree that Tapes N' Tapes is not the best band from your town, however.

  7. this makes me want to check it out ASAP

Just check out 'Roscoe". It's a great Fleetwood Mac rip-off. But don't buy into the Midlake hype. The last thing we need is a Bread revival. In the new Spin the lead singer talks about listening to Christopher Cross at home. Christopher Cross people! If I made a list of the top ten Denton bands ever, Midlake, needless to say, would not be on it. Go buy some Centro-matic, Baptist Generals and Slobberbone records instead.
