This all will change, I left out the last ten years of my life.

  2. Wouldn't it be considered a bad thing that these songs sound better stripped down? Don't get me wrong, if they sounded horrible stripped down, that would mean they were bad songs to begin with, which would certainly be worse.

    Who said that?

Not what I meant. Not better, just new and refreshing.

ryan, you are the wind beneath my wings! :cheekkiss

    this is true

Louisville soon, let me know where your staying......................or should we just randomly meet in odd states like usual?

  3. You and all your concert bastardness! Man you get to see some cool shit. I think I'm heading down that road like yourself, that really put thought into what shows at what expence are really worth seeing. Hometown shows, sur I'll go see who ever, but in my old age with school and family I think I 'm going to reconsider what is really important, quanity or quality? Easy answer. I wish these solo shows and gems were anounced sooner, atleast a heads up. I can't stay on top of things like I use to. Let me know in advance, a slap upside the head........dude, you know this worth it....prioritizes muther fucker. Meaning myself.

  4. Jim can write his ass off in my opinion. Listening to the SXSW solo show confirmed it for me. Hearing the newer material in all of it's nakedness really got to me in a good way. Even songs like Gideon and Wonderfull Man turned out to be my favs. I love them as rockers and had no idea that as slow jams this could be pulled off. The fact that he doesn't try too hard to please or give way to the ear is a defeat in and of itself. The dude can can write. The fact that you can't put your finger on it is what I'm saying. This past month I did my first recording with a buddy of mine and he pulled out the upright bass and bowed it. This was only track three of eight and at first it was a scratch track. After the next few tracks we realized that we really couldn't hear it so we hit mute and the song was lacking what we built up to. Without it the song doesn't work, but you can't really hear it. I soon learned that less is more and feeling comes from blended layers of sounds that souround the lryics. Later on my friend turns to me and says, man, you really have some great lines in that song. Well, thanks, but we have been playing that tune for over a year now, but thanks.

    NYE ! Maybe

  5. I thought it was before that. I have a 99 show from england and Jeff rips apart the crowd for being, well...them.

Yes, it has been done atleast 15 times I have heard it.

  6. I have found the scraper to be the most important woodworking tool there is for necks and bodies, you just have to get used to setting the burr

8 pieces sound like alot of glue...can you get those pics up. im curious...?

My fingers wen't completly numb for two days using those finger scapers.

Reconsidering the amount of work I really wan't to do on my first neck. I'm routing my rosette and gluing my soundboard braces the next few days. I ran into some riples on my side so I have to brace them.....oh well. I imagine I'll hit the neck towards the end of the week. I'll post my weeks photos on weekends.

I'm over the shock and have had my hands on 90% of the tools. I have never even ran a band saw before. I'm amazed that only one fuck up is all it takes. No third times a charm going on in this line of work.

    Thanks for the input!

And I have been to the ocean before.......thanks.

  7. Exact same problem here. I'm quite curious about this.

Go to the above stewmac link and get this book.....a must have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guitar Player Repair Guide-third edition by Dan Erlewine.

Very few basic tools needed. Pretty much the same tools for a setup. And you will never have to pay for one agian.

  8. How do you hook the neck on with an acoustic? I've been wanting to make a les paul or sg, but the thought of doing a set neck scares me.

I think I'm going with a dove tail, but who knows. I'm running my truss rod at the head, so maybe a bolt on?. All in all the neck and block will be around 8 pieces of wood glued and sanded.

Electrics are way easier. Route out the space, and screw or glue the fucker in, clamp, set it and waite. Adjust the rod to flat or a bit of back bow.

  9. That is awesome. Building an acoustic guitar = the true test.

Not really, you should see the work required to make an archtop..............holy shit. I'm off this weekend and have some questions. If you other builders don't mind shootin' the shit. Sat. or Sun. I'm really pushing myself too hard, I need to slow down and not expect perfection. I feel like I'm in Med school while bench pressing at the same time. My fingers are numb from all the sanding and getting the radius correct on the back braces.

Thanks for caring people, I hope I'm not bugging you all. And Rowboat..............we need a heart to heart talk my brother, I feel like I jumped into a pool of sharks but love every minute of it. Will this feeling pass? Not the love, but the mind fuck of learning so much right off the bat.

  10. Yeah, all. Recording with new strings has it's pros and cons. Make sure you EQ if running DI, tracks can sound rather tiny. I like to record by mics when using an older instrument. My D-15 always restrung and DI with EQ, Gibson 60's LG1 mic with worn strings. The Martin can take a fresh sound w/out compromising tone, while the LG1 needs a brake in period. Studios and Pro's recomend a string change every week. I now get free Martin strings for the next year through school, so I'm taking advantage of a restring as much as posible.

  11. And about the neck blank, did you rough out that initial shape yourself?

Oh yeah, we do everything but cut down the tree...........well a few of the other students do. Everything is done by hand by blanks, blocks, sheets.... ect. Hell, I might gut a pig or hunt down an elephant one of these days. Learning is pretty intense, still have all my fingers.

  12. 14 Fret OM/OOO....................More on the process later.

  13. If you wan't to go with humbuckers, the question is, what are you going aftrer? The first being, do you wan't a tele tone with the capability of the classic humbuck sound, or do you wan't a full dual humbuck sound? If question 1 meets your needs, then you'll wan't a standard tele body and route the neck pickup cavity to it's apropriate size. If question 2 is more what your wanting, then I say go with a 72' deluxe tele body that has routed cavities for both pups, and more of a strat neck and head. I eventualy wan't to build a standard tele body with a 60's strat neck and the Joe Barden humbuck neck, tele bridge with l1 switching! Read below.

IMO, I would go with option 1 because the varity of sounds you can pull from one instrument. I know it's a pricey option but you could use a toggle switch to blend the two, which actually blends and cancels the active humbucker and bridge pup to bring out a single coil tone, such as a strat sound. So in one kill of a build, you get a Tele, LP(SG), and Strat from a single guitar.

  14. Hey guys, I've been chating with Renic and she out of the kindness of her heart is going to setup a ftp site for all of us to post our music on. This will be up very soon, and can't waite to share and discuss the projects we are working on.

    Let the fun begin!

And thank you again to Renic.

  15. What happened Friday did not warrant face punching and removal by security, it was a couple of brushes from arm to arm. We are aware of 'those' people although, that is still part of a show sometimes and doesn't mean 'that' person is evil or should be executed or that the drink is to blame, merely a contributing factor. Shit, maybe you were going through some things that made you want to let loose when you were 'that' guy. We are all water and dna, etc. have some compassion.

No blame from my end, I just don't like being told I have to watch out for you. I see Wilco GA shows in a whole new light and category of it's own. Those people up front do deserve to be there, they paid their dues standing in line all day................rain or shine, snow or sleet. I use to think the same way, it's a free country, no one own's that spot, but I was wrong. While I was at the bar all day having fun, these folks were putting in time to insure them a spot on the rail. I took from them what they put in a whole day of waiting patiently in hopes to have their place for the event. I'm not one to waite in line all day, but when I do, I feel I have earned that place. Only one time did I butt in line, but did in a considerate maner. It was Wilco last year in Columbia and I got there late and really wanted to see Dr. Dog up front. I explained myself in a manner that was rewarded and returned to my original spot. Wilco shows are different than many others I have found out in the past nine years or so. It's not Tupelo whiskey drinking music, it's adults and children alike wanting to share a musical experiece in a common way, band and fans for that matter. If I wan't to get silly and egg on a band, I go see the Trucker's who promote this behavior. I don't think Wilco promotes these ideals and at first I thought it was kind of lame that a fanbase acted so seriuos. I quickly learned I was stereotyping them they same way I was. No one here is the same, not two are alike by any means but do share the same love for music in an adultly manor. Please oh plaese come to as many shows as you like, hang out.....I'll buy you the first round. Stay on these boards, there is more here than Just Wilco, I rarely ever talk Wilco on VC, nor do any of those standing in line all day. We could give a fuck less about how many posts we have, or the grime on someone. Hell, look at the one guy who has seen more Wilco shows than anyone on here, he has fewer posts than you, and he's one hell of a guy. Meeting these folks have been great, and I model my behavior to respect their's.

    Sorry for the ramble.
