I had no idea that the scalpers were going to bogart this show. I'd planned on going down to the theater on Monday to avoid the TicketBastard fees, but M.Chris told me via FB status that I'd missed the boat. If anyone knows any legit ticket sources, please let me know! I need two. Message me or email at ebelden@boulevard.com. I can sweeten the deal with beer!
Thanks!

P.S. I had no idea how easy it is to post on VC with a phone. Oh, I am going to be using this a lot...

Nickel Creek has maintained a steady position at/near the top of my Favorite Bands list for almost 5 years now. I can absolutely understand why they would take a break from their current status, but I am still sad to see them end. (And now that I'm actually employed for real, I guarantee that a few of my sick days next year will be spent seeing a show or several at the end of their run.)
From my naive and foolishly optimistic fangirl point of view, this seems like a temporary thing. Right? Maybe? I can see the hiatus lasting a few years, perhaps, but I want to believe that they enjoy playing with each other enough to resume it at some point. Seventeen years is a long time. That seems like a reason both to take a break and to eventually reunite.

M. Chris and I just returned from seeing this.
Loved it. (And happily sat through the credits with DeVotchKa and Sufjan!)
I remember watching Steve Carell perform point-counterpoint bits on the Daily Show with Stephen Colbert. And now look at him... I mean, the expression on his face when Sheryl picked him up from the hospital was just heartwrenching. Excellent acting all around in this film.
Favorite line (among many) --
Frank: You were snorting heroin?
Grandpa: I'm old!

Ordained in the land o' beer. It's a good feeling.
In other news, I just finished housesitting at the home of my lab boss. She lives on a lake. I was only there for three days, but it felt longer than that. The septic system backed up and flooded the downstairs bathroom. Her irritating little dog crapped on the floor (twice). The same irritating little dog also howled when I wasn't petting him, howled when I put him in his pen for the night, and spent a solid hour each evening licking the leather couch.
Oh, and worst of all, the lake is a 45-minute drive from the city (on my all-time least favorite highway). You've never truly hated I-70 until you're commuting at 6a.m. and blockaded into the wrong lane by sleep-deprived truck drivers.
'Tis good to be back here at the M. Chris abode.

Announcement:
I have just been offered a full-time laboratory position at the Boulevard Brewing Company.
(This has been a long time hoping.)
All you kids planning on a Kansas City visit -- beers are on me!

I can't remember. Lemme go check.
Yep! Fraoch!
YUM.
And now we're drinking green beer (Pale Ale) that I pulled off the pallet today. Not so great. (But give it two weeks to finish bottle conditioning...)
Next: our seasonal lager (Bob's '47). No bottle conditioning necessary.
Immediate deliciousness = priceless!

Me too.
Drinking... other things... etc.
Off to discuss the major thematic differences between Sweet Charity and Nights of Cabiria.

I'm a bad influence. I took three friends around work today and got them a bit drunk. Now that I'm home, I have insisted that M. Chris and I sample all the grand Scottish beers that my friend brought back from vacation. We're currently drinking a heather ale. Before this was an ale flavored with coriander, and after this is an IPA.
Followed by a canned brew containing a special "widget." (A widget. What a word.)
Hooray for a six-hour buzz!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heart you.

I'm going through baseball withdrawal. I didn't even realize I was hooked until this week. And I'm rooting for a last-place team! Get the games back on already!
Me too! Cheers to not being a fairweather fan.
To celebrate the end of the break, I believe I'll go to the Royals game on Tuesday and get a complimentary Buck O'Neil jersey-style Monarchs t-shirt.

I bet you're smarter, though.
In other news, I had to wear heels today at work, and now both my legs ache. Going from Merrells to Target-bought dress shoes was not a pleasant change of pace. Ouch.

(Someone had to.)

It is entirely too hot here today.
(P.S. Anyone who disputes "it's not the heat, it's the humidity" is more than welcome to hang out next to my car on the parking garage roof while I'm at work tomorrow.)

There's a bigot on the Kansas City Star's editorial board.

I might be more worried if it was, like, bird Ebola.
Seriously -- unless something of such significance happens that there is a legitimate and immediate cause for alarm, I'm probably not going to do any preparation.

1. to hear that Lewis Diuguid was beaten to within an inch of his life by a Black Panther party member
2. some barbecue
3. a Pale Ale
4. for the humidity to take at least a 50% drop
5. to read some more of Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
(Category: things that I would like right about now)

What a delightful roommate.
On an entirely different and non-wubby note, I'm a little pissed off at a columnist for our local paper. Apparently having an ad campaign that features the phrase "Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe," (among other choice-related phrases) means that Boulevard is racist. Am I alone in thinking that the rhyme, despite its origins, is now only about playfully making decisions?
Here is the article (which includes a photo of the aforementioned offensive billboard).
(And just for example's sake, here's another one of the ads.)

Brie totally rules. But for the sake of argument, you and your elitist cheeses can go to hell.

I may be in the minority here, but I thought Pirates 2 sucked.
Secondly, I really REALLY hate movies that leave a cliffhanger in the method this film does. It actually made me NOT want to see the final installment of the series.
I heard it wasn't very good. Didn't catch the first one until it had been out on DVD for a year, so I might have to continue the tradition. And I totally agree with the cliffhanger thing. For some reason, they make me lose interest entirely. I still haven't seen the third Matrix movie.
Shrek pales to all Pixar films. I loved the old Willy Wonka. Disney's Peter Pan may be the best cartoon ever. Jack Black is funny. Adam Sandler isn't (but he's a decent actor). The guy that did Winnie the Poo's voice and the Jungle Book snake is awesome. The guy that sang "Hakuna Matata" in Lion King I want to blow up with a stick of dynamite. I'm totally ok with...and actually like....the sweetness of It's A Wonderful Life, Mary Poppins and Sound of Music. I also love and am fascinated by the dark nature of American Beauty and Mystic River. If you haven't seen Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, you should.I did a slight bit of editing, but I very much agree with many of the things you said here.

1. Indian food
2. good ol' Kansas City barbecue
3. Chinese food
4. Italian food
5. Mexican food
(Of course, preference can change day to day, but those are the general rankings.)

I agree. They're making it sound like each show is not just a concert, but a personal gift to that city.
It says something simple in a whole lot of words. Appropriate for Sufjan, I suppose.
(Not that I wouldn't go...)

The Royals kicked ass and a half tonight!!! 13-3 over Toronto.
We've got a thing here where if the guys get 12 hits, we can redeem our ticket for a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. But tonight, the "Fireworks Friday" post-game display did not function properly, so they told us that we can redeem our ticket for a rain check to any other game this season.
My mom wants both. (She's both precious and thrify, in that order.)
Hmm...

Gah. I hate the Pageant. He should definitely reschedule that one and play the Uptown in KC instead...

Tickets sold already? I tried sending a PM, but this newfangled phone technology confuses me sometimes. Okay, a lot.
