  1. Who's to say with certainty, but it's difficult to dismiss as fiction accounts like the ones Buck O'Neil, himself a Negro League icon, can spin about Paige.

O'Neil tells a story from 1942 about Paige and the Kansas City Monarchs.

    :wub

    Happy birthday, indeed, Satchel.

(And yes, I am still upset that Buck O'Neil got denied the HOF. If it ever actually happens, it certainly won't be during his lifetime, which would have been the most inspiring part.)

  2. (Is this reminding anyone else of the "Bill Brasky" sketches on SNL? Sidenote: there's a Wikipedia site for everything. I am now convinced.)

    - "Bill Brasky is the father of every kid in this town!"

    - "His poop is considered currency in Argentina."

    - "I once saw him scissor-kick Angela Lansbury."

    - "Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can't find one. Finally Brasky takes me to a vacant lot and says, 'Here we are.' We sat there for a year and a half

  3. A little trivia nugget for anyone who wants to feel good about their team...

In order to be on track with where we were last year at this time, the Royals would have to lose the next consecutive 30 games.

Yeah. I don't even know what to do with that information. I'm just glad we seem to be turning around. And wow, I knew we were abysmal last year, but a smoldering ruin? Yikes.

  4. Grudzielanek

Really? Then yep, both are still Royals. Neither had a stand-out game tonight, but then again, neither was the reason we blew our two-run lead and lost 6-5. Ah well. There was certainly optimism in the air, which is something that's been missing for way too long.

And the pre-Fourth of July fireworks show following the game was incredible. Hats off to the pyrotechnics squad. (So that's where David Glass is spending our salary money...)

  5. Tony G -- yes.

Mark G -- I'm not sure. There is a Mark G, but I dunno if it's the one you're picturing. This dude played for the Cards before playing for us.

In the spirit of this thread, I will now go to a baseball game in support of the boys in blue (as soon as my friend gets here... good thing MChris lives mighty close to the stadium).

  6. Aww, really? That makes me happy. The team has just been in a crap spiral for so long -- there's not much that can be done with our current owner and the way profits are(n't) split in the MLB. It's a tough hand to be dealt. Hopefully Moore will stick with KC long enough to help out a bit.

  7. I'd just like to jump in as a lone Royals fan and congratulate our boys on beating the Cards two out of three games at Busch stadium. I think we've only lost four of the last 13, which is huge. For us. Come on. We've been struggling to break .500 for years.

AND, Dayton Moore gets giant props in my book for making a clause in his contract that team owner David Glass (the Wal-Mart devil man) would have no say in Moore's staffing choices. Atta boy, Dayton. KC fans finally have a reason to feel optimistic about the future.

I'm sorry. I can't help it. The Chris Thile still makes me all swoony.

(If you're interested in seeking out some more MySpace-related tunes, he and his solo effort compatriots -- the How To Grow A Band -- do a pretty swinging version of the White Stripes' Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground. Here. Ophelia is nice too. M. Chris and I have listened to each many times.)

  10. Here's the face of trouble

    it's the face I wear,

and it may invite you in,

    but I won't go there

    Here's a working model

    that generates despair

And this baby cranks it out,

and it will take you out,

    and I won't care

    It's a beauty

    It's the mark of someone

    who's beyond repair

    He'll refuse to help himself,

    thinking only of himself,

and though he isn't by himself,

    Well, it's your job now

    There's a conversation

    we're about to have

and it's full of twists and turns,

    half-truths and vague concerns,

    from one who never learns

    to one who never learns,

    and I never learn

    Here's the face of trouble

  11. Okay, here's some more Sara... there aren't a whole lot of pictures of her when she's not performing, so that's what I've got.

(you can't see her face here, but I think the movement in this picture is really cool)

  12. Those don't seem to be very good pictures of her, unfortunately. The ones from the CD booklets make her eseem extra-hot, but these look kind of bland to me.

    :unsure

She's hot. I'll find something you'll like. It is now my personal mission.

  13. Not to be confused with IMHO ("in my honest opinion"), which is very useful when distinguishing between your honest and your fraudulent opinions.

    :lol

I'm all about giving fraudulent opinions under the "IMO" guise. It's kind of like Simon Says... you've got to keep an eye out for the "IMHO" if you want to know when I really mean what I'm saying.
