  1. i watched a show on Travel Channel last night - Johnny Colt: At Full Volume - seems like this may be a regular show? he went to Thailand and did some adventure-y things - did some Thai fighting/boxing, got a Thai tattoo on the back of his head, did some rock climbing, was around cobra snakes, etc... kind of interesting to watch...

    ?

  2. I'll agree with David - DP #7 is one of my favorites. The Playin' on there was my favorite for YEARS.

Regarding Vince's first show: I'll bet I wasn't the only VCer there. Not bad - but a week later when Bruce hooked up with the boys the shit REALLY got good. I think those first few tours with the double keyboard action was as good as anything they did in the last 10 years.

bruce was fun live, but those tapes are like middle range hell. just too much going on. i wish it was just bruce. vince was always too high in the mix.

anyway, any one see/hear those shows phil and bob did with the darkstar orchestra dude?

  3. I really like the song Greenhorn. I am surprised you don't care for the Amorica/Tall/The Band songs.

    I found this at Wikipedia:

cool. i wonder which sequence the band prefers. i do like a few songs on amorica, but not familiar with the lost crowes stuff. like i said before, gonna dig into the catalog a bit after i digest the new one. thanks again for the info:)

  4. That is a Fred Neil song I do believe. Chris has quite the thing for songs about the old west, or whatever you want to call it.

Here the links to the setlists, notes, reviews, etc.:

    February 21st

    February 22nd

    February 28th

    March 1st

    March 7th

It appears they were offering a "reward" for anyone who pointed out if a taper was around. I guess just the one show has leaked out so far. It is interesting that they actually note that it was taped (February 21st).

Also, I read somewhere that the vinyl version has the songs in a different order.

thanks for the info. gonna check this out. curious about the different order on the vinyl. btw, appaloosa is awesome.

  5. never been a crowes fan, except for the singles back in the early 90s. have tried several times. on a whim, i got this lp. i love it. it's the first album in years that i've actually want to go back and listen to again in order to pick up the nuances. just great lyrics, compelling songs in a classic format, and excellent production. ALL albums should be recorded this way. i'm only listening to the first album at this point. i love luther's playing. not much more to say. i'm really excited about diving back into their catalog in the future and i'm dying to hear the unreleased tracks from this album.

  6. I'm a big Molina fan.

Get the new record, Josephine and track down a copy of The Lioness. Nashville Moon is also really good, very country rock (if you couldn't tell by that title!). Two records you might not hear about are "Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma" (translates to You Appeared To Me As A Ghost), which is a live record but with mostly exclusive songs... as all as "The Black Ram", which was released with Nashville Moon but sounds a lot like a Songs: Ohia record, even though it was released under Magnolia Electric Co.

Once you absorb all that you're ready to graduate onto "Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go" (one of my all time favorites, a must own) and Ghost Tropic.

Honestly, I think all the records from The Lioness onwards are, really, really good. My least favorite would be Pyramid Electric Co, but even then, it contains "Long Desert Train".

"Let Me Go" requires some patience but it's really worth it, I'd just recommend you get into some of the more accessible records first though!

im surprised you like Let me go more than pyramid. both are really acquired tasts, but let me go is so so bleak!

  7. well, their best album is Nashville Moon which is part of the Sojourners Box set. it's the first 12 songs. have no idea why jason didn't release that instead of the hodgepodge fading trails. however, fading trails is okay. as far as songs ohia goes, their best album is the Lioness. molina's voice is listenable and it's just a nice dark, yet warm album. from there, ghost tropic. very very rewarding after several listens. what ever that means.

of course, i'm responding on a day when actually like molina more than the idea of him. this could change momentarily. i'm getting so much more reactionary about music as i get older:) Nashville Moon is a keeper. one of the best albums of the decade as far as i'm concerned.

  8. So far all I have is:

Magnolia Electric Co. - What Comes After the Blues

Songs Ohia - Didn't it Rain

Songs Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.

Where should i go next? I'm thinking let me go, let me go, let me go, or maybe Trials and Errors.

    Any ideas? Thanks

  9. The "Trunk Show Tour" was Neil solo acoustic for a set. A 20 minute break. Then it was Neil, Ben Keith, Rick Rosas, Ralph Molina, Pegi, and a few other backup singers plugged. Double fix.

that's right. man, that must have been a great show. i love ben keith. we went to see CSNY on that LWW tour in atlanta and ben was just walking around in the audience. my wife was like, 'there's ben keith!' i was so happy i had schooled her so well on neil and his cronies:) incidently, that show ended up being the centerpiece of the Deja Vu movie a few years back. pretty interesting scene.

  10. heard the new album, Joy. it's pretty MOR. phish used to have good songs as well as chops. they still have chops, but the songs are gone. page's song is just a joke. can't believe he couldn't come up with anything given his good solo album a few years back. some of the songs have potential(light, 20 years) but go nowhere except into multiple voice overdub hell. the initial hook on time turns elastic is good, but the rest of the song is totally forgotten and way too long. luckily, the band still has their chops and are playing well these days. i used to like their albums. rift, billy breaths, lawnboy, story of the ghost, all some of the best music of the 90s. guess those days are over. i compare them to rush. still can go out there blow way an audience, but when it comes to new material, it's over. too bad.

  11. Thanks. I do actually have some. I was just showing my interest for this particular era. Very curious about Time Fades Away II. I'm a huge fan of TFA and all I have is a mp3 ripp off of a vynil. So I wouldn't mind get Don't Be Denied, L.A. and Last Dance in archives sounding version asap.

Doom Tour is CSNY. I LOVE Pushed It Over The End from that era. And I'm with you Victor, TFA on CD/DVD would be so awesome RIGHT NOW!

    thanks for posting...

what is Doom Tour? also, where did you get this info? finally, no Rusted Out Garage or Ducks or Catalyst?

  13. It's #12 in the "Neil Young Archives Performance Series." Considering it's a collection from a 1992 tour, twelve sounds about right. The NYAPS includes stuff like Massey Hall, Canterbury House, Fillmore East, and Riverboat. My guess is that it's all been mapped out chronologically in terms of what number each show has been assigned. The releases, however, will not be chronological.

okay, is see. so now we need to figure out what the other ones are. rusted out garage will be one. trans band another. prolly a weld era show too. what else?

  14. yeah, i'm looking forward to it. i do wish it was either a whole show or there was a bonus disc with 'other songs'. i saw this tour. it was so great. shawn colvin opened up. neil played so many great songs that tour and he was still fairly young and looked like the 70s neil young pics. with his leather vest and jeans etc. i remember he played field of opportunity as well as speaking out. would love to have those on this disc.

now the mysterious part is that this is archive release #12. wtf?

  15. Well, with a Led Zeppelin member and two guys who clearly take a lot of inspiration from Zep, is this at all a surprise?

it doesn't sound like zep. it sounds like all the other cock rock/alterna rock that's come out for almost two decades now. rock is over!

  17. secret machines have been making music like this for years.

why is music produced so bad? there is a reason the old zep stuff is amazing...it's produced so warmly with phat drums up front and not echoed to shit. the bass is actually heard and guitars basically come out of the speakers. it's really not that the music of the last 28 years has been bad, its the production!!! ironically, one of the best produced songs of the last decade was that queens of the stoneage song that dave played on.
