  1. I've seen them a few times and although they sounded great they never seemed to move the crowd. Don't get me wrong, they are one of my favorite bands and I would go see them in a heartbeat, but I wouldn't recommend them to just anybody.

    I'd say that's the crowd's problem.

Interestingly, I think the time I've seen them move the crowd the most was on the I&W tour, when I found myself watching Calexico with a bunch of Dawson's Creek/Garden State-esque youth, who probably didn't have an inkling who Calexico were until their work with Beam. They seemed to be loving the Calexico set.

Oh, and they drew - and moved - a HUGE crowd at ACL last year.

  2. I saw a great show last night and I'm feeling really good right now. I wish I felt this way after every show I see as I do get out quite frequently. So I decided to put together a small list of bands who moved me to feel the way I do today - bands who I want to take all my friends to see next time around - artists who inspire me. Here's my short list of late:

    The Hold Steady (last night)

    David Rawlings Machine

    Ween

    Old Crow Medicine Show

    Yo La Tengo

    Rush

    Wilco

    Banyan (w/Nels & Watt)

    The Wiyos

No Calexico on your list, El Pic?

There may be live bands as good out there right now. But none better.

  3. I have both the Merriweather and the Chastain Park shows and I love them both, but think the Chastain one has the better sound quality. :)

The Chastain show was taped by Sloan Simpson, a 'master taper' of some renown in this area. If anyone could pull a good tape under those conditions, it is Sloan. Props to him.

  4. woot! atl on a sat, think i'm going to visit some family!

    Come on down!

This is a BIG step up in venue for The National. They just played here last month at the EARL - I dunno, maybe 225 or so there. Variety Playhouse holds 1000 or so.

  5. i too hope it shows up on bt etree. dime has reached capacity of registered users and won't let any newbies in. :ohwell

DIME is capped at 100,000 users, but they are constantly clearing out accounts and slots are available pretty much daily. Just keep trying, and you'll get one.

  6. THEY TOOK DOWN THE TORRENT BECAUSE i DID NOT HAVE A FLAC. FINGURE PRINT. SORRY FOLKS I WILL REPOST ON ON ANONTER SITE AND LET YOU KNOW. IN A DAY OR SO ABOUT 40 FOLKS GOT THE SHOW =- etree wants a file print and I fucking do not know how to create it - sorry for you folks

    SORRY SORRY

For future reference, this is easy. In FLAC Frontend, open the files like you are going to decode them. On the right, is a button that says 'fingerprint.' hit this button. save the txt file.

  7. Hey, same Sloan. I was sitting on the end of the row next to the board.

I just listened to a little more of the recording, and the rain is a little louder than I first thought, but it's still not really distracting.

As always, Sloan, thank you very kindly for taping. I know that if a good tape could be pulled in those conditions, you're the one that could do it.

Rain + volume restrictions + chatty Chastain is daunting, but it seems that most agree that the guys stepped up and rewarded those who braved it.

  8. There was a taper about five rows in front of me. I was in Row 14 pit, so he was probably somewhere between row 8 and 10 next to the center aisle. He had a small umbrella above his mics that appeared to be sufficient during the light rain, but I think he probably put his recording gear away when the heavy rain started. Maybe he was able to record the whole show...who knows?

I was right in front of this guy - he was in row 9. He had the rig up the whole time, but I'm not sure what kind of tape he will get. His mikes were at about 3.5' off the ground. And the rain was loud enough at times to be heard over the music.

  9. I figured I'd get this started with the circle of friends/soundcheck

    how to fight loneliness

    shake it off

    pot kettle black

    on and on and on

Seemed like it got cut short though because of the lightning that started during on and on, but it was still totally awesome.

Thanks - I'd love to see a revival of not for the season > how to fight loneliness.

  10. It is officially raining in alpharetta (aka close to chastain)

Alpharetta is not particularly close to Chastain. Downtown is closer. But it is raining all over metro right now, and will be for a little while. Showtime is looking fine, however.

  11. thanks for your excellent input, I guess i'll just trust that you know exactly what you are talking about.

I do know that fretting over bad weather won't make it go away.

Expecting better-than-predicted weather, on the other hand...

And the collective bad vibe of folks worrying over it, bailing out over it, etc. isn't good for anyone.

  12. Just a concern of mine, I live in Auburn, about two hours away and I am worried about the weather for tonight's show in Atlanta. The weather channel is saying thunderstorms, and if so, will the band still play? I know they'd play in rain, but it looks pretty awful and the conditions seem like they'd be unsafe.

Does anyone know if the venue would close if it was real bad?

Enough with the negative vibes, Moriarty.

    We're gonna be fine.

  13. sports is an amazing album start to finish.

"Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consumate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. "

  14. hahah exactly!

A long thread on drummers and no one even mentions the name CONVERTINO? I thought you people were music fans, fgs.

    And Pence. Matt Pence.

These two guys are as good as anyone going. JonCon may be as good as anyone ever.

Definitely rate a mention. Rate a listen even more.

  15. Wilco / Jeff Tweedy

Centro-matic / South San Gabriel / Will Johnson

    Calexico

    The National

    Drive-By Truckers

    Alejandro Escovedo

    Neko Case

    Bob Dylan

    Van Morrison

    Neil Young

    Lucinda Williams

    Norman Blake

    Ryan Adams

    The Gourds

    Gillian Welch & David Rawlings

    Dave Alvin / Blasters

    Explosions In The Sky

    Richard Buckner

Jon Langford / Mekons / Waco Brothers

    Patty Griffin

  16. That's true, thank god. The table shows at Chastain bring out the season pass holders who are FAR more interested in chatting with their pals and business clients than listening to music.

I just checked Ticketmaster and found seats in the 15th row. (Orchestra Row O) That's not good.

I looked through the Creative Loafing (Atlanta's free weekly magazine) today. There were at least 3 chastain ads. None of them mentioned the Wilco show. I didn't see any ads for the new Wilco album either, which is kind of odd since it came out this week.

Row O of the Orchestra is not the fifteenth row. There are twenty some-odd rows in the pit (I'm in the 8th one), then five or six rows in the boxes, then the Orchestra starts.

  17. I have to say, I find the lyrics to be somewhat lacking. Overall they are pretty good, but everyonce in a while I'll hear something that just makes me go "What?"

"You were always weird but I never had to hold you by the edges like I do now." One of my favorite lines of the year.
