  1. Wow, that surprising. I was figuring either Red Door or somewhere in E. Nashville. Even though it has a jukebox, I was hoping you would say it was one of my favorite digs, the Villager.

    Ah, the Villager.

When I was a kid we lived on Capers (the part of Capers we lived on isn't there anymore, as it was swallowed by the Med Center), and my dad used to hang at the Villager.

20 years later, when I was in school in Nashville, I lived on Fairfax and used to hang at the Villager and throw darts regularly.

It is one of the few institutions in the village to last through the gentrification (is Ralph's still there?). Great place.

  3. tried several times and Howe Gelb is finally clicking with me. Damn he is incredible. Any fans? I am wondering if he has any other side projects besides solo, GS, Arizon Amp? Also, any similar bands to him-aka-desert/rock/blues etc.

    thanks for the input!

    craig

'Sno Angel Like You was one of the best records of 2006.

Another side project is OP8, with Joey and John from Calexico and Lisa Germano.

As far as similar desert rock, Calexico and Friends of Dean Martinez would top the list.

  4. I've heard that it might be general admission but the tickets I got Friday were for the "orch pit" and had rows+seats. The orch pit as they call it though is actually the main section w/seats at Chastain... which is quite huge. The view of the stage and sound will be great even from the lawn though, lets all just pray for good weather!

Let me add that it looks like in the first two days of ticket sales Wilco sold about half this venue - a little better than 3000 tickets. Not bad, considering they didn't sell out the 4400 seat Fox Theatre until a couple of days before the show on their last trip through.

The "best available" right now on ticketmaster are in the row g-j range in the orchestra section - about halfway up the lower orchestra section. If you can get in the middle section behind the sbd, these are good seats. I've seen many a show from this area.

But I'm excited about my 8th row pit seats for this one. Closest I've ever been at Chastain.

  6. I believe the infamous Neil Young/Lucinda Williams show was NOT part of a series, and is well known as an example of poor audience behavior.

Obviously I hope the crowd for Wilco will be respectful and have a good time, but there just seems to be something about the venue that brings out the worst in audiences.

BTW - I was at that Neil/Lu show also - and the crowd was great for Lucinda, because her set was in the middle of a thunderstorm and only people who wanted to see her were out there.

I'd say it a little differently. There is something about the venue - primarily its location - that brings out the worst audiences. I don't think that people who otherwise are respectful turn into rude audience members at Chastain. I think Chastain draws a crowd of rude, self-centered dilettantes who won't venture into a loud, crowded smoky intown venue for a show.

As I said on another board, I hope the band will open the set with a couple of noisefests to run off some of the social attendees.

  8. the Atlanta venue really isn't worth the drive? are you sure?

i too am hoping for a VA/DC venue. that would be ideal, especially if everything else in my life falls into order. can that hurry up already so i can plan my wilco concert schedule. :)

The venue is fine. Quite nice actually. A beautiful WPA era amphitheatre. It is the people there that are typically the problem.

For the summer series, they allow folks to bring food and drink, candles for tables, etc. You end up with lots of chatty people who aren't paying attention to the show. And, if this has any meaning to you, it is usually a very 'Buckhead' crowd.

Hopefully, this one will be a little different. I've seen 2-3 shows at Chastain without the table setup with better crowds than the typical Chastain crowd.

BTW - this isn't Wilco's first stop at Chastain. They opened for REM there a few years back.

  9. I got to say...I hadn't heard of these guys before a couple of weeks ago. Really digging this album ('Slow Show' is my most immediate favorite). I'm ready to go into their back catalog...it sounds like the consensus is that "Alligator" is their best? Should I start there? What the band's story?

    Cheers.

I'm loving this record. It will be in my top 5 for sure.

IMO, Slow Show > Apartment Story > Start A War is the high point of the record.

  10. this disc is a masterpiece!!!!! i really think everyone here would enjoy it.

jay farrar's best work, period. yes that includes uncle tupelo and trace. :thumbup

    That's just crazy talk.

But I do like 'methamphetamine' more than just about anything he's done since Straightaways.

  11. Did they decide to leak this to pre-empt the thunder of Son Volt's upcoming release? :ninja Okay, that's overboard.

Have you heard The Search? I don't think it'll be that much thunder.

A couple of tracks I like more than anything since Straightaways. Most of the rest, meh.

  12. Oh, I forgot to mention that Scott started his set with Dear Employer, which was a high point for me. He had the drummer and violinist from Tin Cup Prophette play with him during his set.

There was a great Hatch Show print available for the show.

I'd say the only negative for me was that the venue was cold as hell. Great night though.

    -Ted

It was cold as hell inside because it was cold as hell outside. That's a drafty old building.

Did anyone see any rigs? I didn't, but I'd love to get a tape of this show.

  13. I found out at work Tuesday afternoon just as tickets went on sale. They were sold out an hour or so later. I think he's announcing these secret gigs on his website, as there were quite a few people there who'd driven in from out of town. He said they just decided to book a few club shows on their way back to LA from NYC.

Same with the Halloween show in Atlanta. Found out about midday Monday. Sold out almost immediately. Fantastic show. Small room (the Loft). $12.

Band and much of crowd in costume.

  14. I'll be there for the duration. And at Shins / Black Angels Friday night. Probably at Jon Dee Graham Saturday after the fest.

    I'll be there.

We also have tickets for Sufjan Friday night.

I'm debating whether or not to sell those tickets and just stay at the fest.

Sufjan comes on about 9:00, so we would miss about 3 hours of the fest.

Although I'm not very interested in seeing Van Morrison, and I've never seen Sufjan.

Just thought I would get that off my chest.
