  1. Egypt's army is on our side (for the $1 billion a year in gear we buy them, they oughtta be) and that's who's in charge of that country, so it'll be OK. (For the Israelis, that is.) But still there's Iran and Yemen. Interesting how drone strikes in the latter have increased quite a bit after we got our diplomats out.

  2. I gotta say, I kind of regret not getting my pistol permit 20 years ago when old Sheriff Quinlan gave them out to anyone who could complete the paperwork, because he believed people shouldn't need a permit to carry a pistol.

  3. A Wilco song came up on shuffle the other day.

    I skipped it.

In all honesty, the last three albums have zapped all the Wilco enthusiasm I used to have.

Thank God you can still scrape up enough enthusiasm to post on a Wilco fansite. ;)

I myself go through phases where I don't listen to Wilco, so I don't and then I want to, so I do - without regret or some feeling of guilt that I do not listen to them enough. This is what Maslow calls self-actualization.

  4. So does the use of tobacco.  yet we learned to hold the big tobacco companies responsible for killing us.

I don't accept that. If you've taken up smoking since like 1970, there is no way you could not be aware of the risks. Tobacco companies make it easier for you to get hooked, sure, but to say they made you smoke is an irresponsible and erroneous abrogation of personal responsibility.

  5. Mmm. Maybe. One could blame the NRA for retarding the progress of background checks, which maybe might have kept this obvious cra-zor from getting a gun, but probably not. America's love of guns and societal delight in killing goes far beyond and dates to way before there was even an NRA, though.

  6. Zimmerman is an asshole, or at least a stupid sap, and is the exact kind of person who should NOT be allowed to have a gun, period. That gun, plus his racist and paranoid outlook, gave him the false courage to get out of his truck and start shit with a total stranger. He found Martin guilty of walking while black, and gave him the death penalty for it. I may be made to travel to Florida at some point in my life, but it will be under duress, as it is a state full of seniles and misguided fools which deserves all the scorn decent people can heap upon it.

  7. This guy is so screwed.  Imagine sitting endlessly in a Moscow airport trying to figure out your limited options.  Where is he going to go?  Still craving attention and having what he considers valuable information, it must be positively cinematic.  Can't wait for the made for TV movie about him.  At this point, no matter how you feel about his information, he has very little future ahead.

(I keep imagining how long a beard the guy is growing.)

I support him and am grateful to him for what he's done, but will point this out. Ellsberg didn't run. He stayed to face the music.

WAMC'S THE ROUNDTABLE BROADCASTS LIVE FROM SOLID SOUND FESTIVAL AT MASS MOCA

ALBANY, NY (06/19/2013)(readMedia)-- WAMC's The Roundtable is thrilled to once again be part of the amazing -and always surprising- Solid Sound Festival, North Adams, MA with a live broadcast from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 21st.

This special edition of The Roundtable will focus on the immense variety that the festival has to offer, with artist interviews and live performances hosted by The Roundtable's Joe Donahue, and WAMC's President and CEO, Dr. Alan Chartock. Says Chartock, "We're so proud to participate in the Solid Sound Festival, because like WAMC, it's a true celebration of the arts that honors a full range of artistic expression right here in our own community."

Now in its third year, Solid Sound presents three days of music, comedy and fine art at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in The Berkshires of Western MA. The festival, created by the alternative rock band Wilco, is presented in collaboration with MASS MoCA. Host Donahue says, "This will be our third "Solid Sound" broadcast and fifth at MASS MoCA. It is a thrill to be among stunning art, their creaky floorboards and given the opportunity to share with our listeners the amazing art, culture, and music emanating from this regional treasure - both during this festival and throughout the year."

In addition to a visit by Wilco frontman and festival originator Jeff Tweedy, the broadcast will include interviews with arts and events curators from MASS MoCA and with artists whose work is currently on display at the museum. Tweedy will be joined by his son, Spencer, whose band, The Blisters, are playing as part of Solid Sound on Sunday. We'll also have an interview with and live performance from indie-pop up-and-comers, Lucius, and we'll learn about Storey Publishing, Urban Birding, and some very special Culinary Events.

The Roundtable broadcast will air from 9 a.m. to noon ET on all WAMC Northeast Public Radio frequencies and will stream live at www.wamc.org. Program segments will be available online by Friday evening at wamc.org/programs/roundtable.
