  1. I wasn't directing my post at anyone in particular. I was reacting to comments I had read here and elsewhere. Part of the appeal of democracy (and hopefully they will have it) is that no one knows what will happen. There's a lot of space for imagination and possibility. Would you prefer that the Egyptian people were still saddled with Mubarak?

  2. Enjoy the moment, people. All of a sudden everyone's a hardened expert on Egyptian politics. They threw the bum out. Hopefully he doesn't get the billions he's rumored to have transferred out of the country. Sure, it may turn out badly, but no one knows. They have a right to self-governance and many people seem to resent the Egyptian people for asserting that right.

  3. Upon further review Michael Young has decided he does not want to be a DH, so he has requested the Rangers to explore trading him.

Young was a little slow at 3B, but still is a viable option for SS and especially 2B. However, he still has $16MM per year coming to him for the next three seasons. The Rangers will have to swallow about a year's worth of that, unless they trade him for another high-paid player. Young also has a limited no-trade clause in his contract, but he becomes a 5/10 player in May, in which case he has full no-trade player's rights under the CBA.

It would seem that Young's career stats have been padded by playing in Arlington. He has a career OPS of .733 on the road. .679 on the road last year. I think Texas would have to pay for 2 years if they traded him for middling prospects. Then again, the Angels took on almost the entirety of that Vernon Wells contract, so I guess there's no saying.

  4. ICKY? Are you denying his father was a terrorist? What would the reaction be if Tweedy was playing a benefit for Yasser Arafat's daughter? There isn't much difference in my mind.

I don't know anything about Yasser Arafat's daughter, but hope that I would consider her on her merits.

I don't consider Wayne Madsen quoting unnamed sources as authoritative. Let's say he's right, though, for the sake of argument. I don't agree with violence of any kind, whether conducted by or committed on soldiers and civilians. However, if Benjamin Emanuel was blowing up British policemen and soldiers in Palestine, he could be considered by many to be an anti-colonialist freedom fighter. Note that the British officers were being transferred from India, another former colonial stronghold.

The second article you posted is much more relevant, as it is about Rahm himself. I already said that Tweedy playing a benefit for Rahm was kind of icky.

  5. Not that I'm an expert, but the Cardinals, White Sox, and Astros are the teams I often see mentioned as having the barest organizations. At least the White Sox seem to have drafted or developed a couple good players over the last couple of years (Dan Hudson, Chris Sale, Gordon Beckham) after years of striking out.

  6. So, there are a lot of reasons for why a cut tree is better than a plastic tree. 1. Plastic is often loaded with lead. They collect dust and need to be cleaned every year. They off-gas. They are often made in China and shipped and trucked to the us on pallets that are loaded with Asian Long-Horned Beetle and Emerald Ash Borer that are going to eventually kill off all the hardwood in Colorado.

Christmas Tree Farms, and selected cutting of national forest trees are a far better idea. Christmas tree farms are one of the last bastions of farming in suburban communities, keeping openspace open, with lots of habitat for wild animals such as deer, birds, etc. Tree farms allow landscapers to keep employed during the winter months where it is cold (such as new england) and supplements income often enough so that those guys don't have to get laid off. They are often grown on land that nothing else will grow on and they keep it from being developed into townhouse farms or 1 acre zoning lots that suck up all the resources.

Selective cutting in the national forest helps trees get bigger because there's less crowding for root space and resources such as water and sun, and the cutting of the smaller trees is also a fire protection measure.

Getting outside to cut your own tree is also far healthier than going to Target or Walmart and picking on out there. Do I need to go on, or do you think she is convinced? Any self respecting hippy would always opt for a real tree over a plastic one. Some communities (san fran for one, and perhaps pdx) have programs where you "rent" a balled and burlapped or containerized tree for the holiday and then when you're done with it, the urban forester or non profit picks up the tree and plants it where it is needed.

I know i'm late to this thread and perhaps a bunch of this has been discussed already but i had to just stop and post because it is something i feel strongly about and I am also pretty sure I am not wrong.

I'd like to point out that most of this argues against buying (not reusing) fake trees.
