  1. They're signing those guys to be bench players--at about 1.7 million between them. Fine signings, I say. The numbers suggest that Vizquel was still a plus defender at three infield positions in 2008. Jones wasn't bad playing corner outfield spots either. They really need a starting corner outfielder and a DH, though. And a bullpen arm or two.

  2. ]Some or most of this may seem crazy to some, but I'm going to research it later on. Anyone familiar with this type of energy (the tides not wireless)?

Bear with me. Let me explain that yes this does come from a movie, but it is quite interesting. The concept at least.

OK. This comes from Southland Tales directed by Richard Kelly.

"The term fluid karma is used to refer to two things in the movie. First, it refers to an "organic compound" that the Treer company discovered while drilling off the coast of Israel, which exists under the Earth's mantle, and circles the world like a "serpent." Second, fluid karma is the name used by Treer for the "hydroelectric energy field" produced by their Utopia tidal generators. As the movie explains, the compound is being used by the Baron to power his energy plants, hence the energy field produced is named after it."

Richard Kelly stated in his interview with EMPIRE Magazine...

"The idea of wireless electricity and tides being a source of energy, and there being a potentially world-altering energy source under the ocean, is based on real scientific theory. Many people think wireless electricity is the thing that could rescue us from our dilemma as we reach the end of the petroleum era. Tide power, and the wireless transmission of electricity, are scientific realities. "

Did you see Southland Tales? Fun flick.

Edit: I was somewhat confused by the stray bracket and/or I'm a moron.

  3. The Bears should just cut Charles Tillman. I can't think of a worse player right now. He can't cover, he can't tackle, he seems like he's kind of a sally... And I've realized after this weeks game now that the Bears are not good at all. They're just a cut above the bad teams. I know the game dictated that they throw, but the Bears ran the ball 12 times. That's absurd. They really need to recommit themselves to running the ball earlier. Oh wait, their O-line sucks. Never mind.

And I feel bad for the Dolphins. They're such a fun team to watch and they play hard and they just can't beat anyone (but the Jets). I'm really rooting for them to go on a run an clinch a wildcard.

Tillman sure was abused by OchoCinco and Larry Fitz, but he's their only halfway decent corner so far as I can tell.

  4. Dang. Refusing to eat somewhere because it's closed on Sundays according to the founder's beliefs seems crazier to me than closing on Sundays according to the founder's beliefs.

Yeah. Unless you have a religious belief in the modern expectation of 24 hour convenience or are strictly opposed to religious beliefs have any effect whatsoever on business.

  5. The Cubs have hired the game's premier hitting instructor in Rudy Jaramillo and gave him a three year, $2.4M contract. The Rangers only offered him a one year deal after 15 years of excellence.

I've always wondered why guys like this (Mazzone, Duncan, Kerrigan, etc.) don't act as consultants to individual players. They could make a fortune charging players $100,000 a year or more acting as personal instructors for 20-25 guys.

Walt Hriniack does this. I doubt he makes that much. But what do I know.
