  1. propaganda

The English term is an 18th century coinage, from the Latin feminine gerund of propagare "to propagate". In its turn, the word propagare is related to the word propages, "a slip, a cutting of a vine" and refers to the gardener's practice to disseminate plants by planting shoots.

The term is not pejorative in origin, nor does it necessarily indicate that the message lacks verity.

Panther, you are incredibly astute! Especially tying in the whole environmental/propagation thing.

    :hmm

  3. Avatar was astonishing. That story never gets old.

Also saw the trailer for Tim Burton's 3D Alice In Wonderland which looks like a whole mess of fun. Plus trailers for another 3 or 4 3D films due out this spring. wtf?

  4. Jeff joked all night about his sister being there and how he played the show to pay for the trip to see her for the holidays.

I have been joking with my daughter, using almost the same words, since the show was announced. "Honey, just let me carry on a couple of acoustics and the trip is payed for."

Nice for you all. I'd love to see him solo again one day.

  5. OK, I pretty much have it narrowed down to:

    Audio Technica ATH M50's

    Sennheiser HD-280's

    Sony MDR 7506

    Grado SR-60i

I think I'm going to rule out the SR-60i because I want the more wrap around type of cans. These seem like they would get uncomfortable quicker. Plus I want closed instead of open. (Is there really that big a difference with open headphones sound quality wise?)

All the reviews say the Sennheisers tend to be uncomfortable, especially for people with a big melon like myself so I think I'm ruling that one out.

That leaves the Audio Technica or Sony.

Any reason to pick one over the other? The Sony's are cheaper but other than that it seems like a wash.

I have the Audio Technica ATH M50's.The sound is phenomenal.

I've not heard any of the others, so I can't comment on them. However, when I was researching my purchase, the ATs came out far ahead.

Edit: Oh I see I already posted in this thread. Yes Moss, I'm still over the moon with them.*

*Supposedly there is a 'burn in' period with headphones that sweetens their sound over time. After a year they still sound pretty sweet. I'm listening now!

  6. Oh, gogo did all the work. I just said, "Yeah, that sounds good" when she asked me things.

    :lol

I can't believe I got photos by some of my favorite photographers for so cheap!

Had I not been so fooking busy this past week, I would have submitted bjorn's famous VC holiday decorations shot. I hereby nominate it for next year's calender:

  7. Started "Botany of Desire" last night and I'm loving it.

While all of Pollan's works are tremendous (except In Defense Of Food. I think he lost his muse after he switched coasts), this might be my favorite. Even the title is perfection.

As a horticulturist, I often wonder at this miraculous, intelligent, symbiotic relationship. Pollan covers a lot of ground in Botany of Desire.

  8. With every escalation of troops and money hemorrhaging out of this country I think of Osama Bid Laden's 2004 video release to Al-Jazeera: Bin Laden bragged at the time that al Qaeda has found it “easy for us to provoke and bait this administration. All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations.”

“And it all shows that the real loser is you,” Bin Laden said. “It is the American people and their economy.”

Bin Laden said of President Bush that “the darkness of black gold blurred his vision and insight, and he gave priority to private interests over the public interests of America.”

The average citizen can never be certain of the true motivation of a government's actions. Is there a credible nuclear threat? Had Bush's war stayed here, there would have at least been some logic to it. Time was of the essence and unless other facts have come to light, THAT OPPORTUNITY HAS PASSED.

Government's main job seems to be obfuscation these days. It matters not who the figurehead is. Washington DC is a vortex. Peace Prize my ass.
