  1. I've lived in Lincoln Square for 7 years. It's awesome. Lots of great restaurants and a handful of good record stores. It's gotten considerably more pricey since I moved in but you can still find good aprtments for a decent price.

Logan Square is also cool and cheaper. Gets nicer all the time. It's on the Blue Line though.

Some nice areas on the South Side too, don't forget. Hyde Park is great as are some areas around Rush hospital off of Roosevelt.

I clearly need to step away from Libertines related music.

  3. I honestly can't believe the democrats are spending time on this during their first 100 hours. They are proving to me that they have no plans on fixing any of the pressing issues of today like illegal immigration and the war in Iraq.

yeah, I mean, just because 70%+ of the population thinks it's a good idea despite the demonizing the GOP and religious right doesn't mean it should actually be ADDRESSED.

  4. I think you're spot on. I often wonder though if they're better at maintining unity or secrecy ( at least in regards to the current Admin.).

I think it's mostly just an image projected by the media and perpetuated by conservative talkingheads who love to describe the Democratic party in disarray. Fact is, the Dems vote in blocks just as often as the Republicans. Sure, there's debate leading up to votes--as there should be--but the Democratic party is failry unified when comes down to voting. There's as much debate among minority (read: Centrist) Republican factions before votes as there is among the various factions of the Democratic party. Fact of the matter is it depends on party leadership as to what gets done and I think the Republican leadership have proven themselves a better opposition force than a governing body.

  5. It still amazes me how the Dems, even when they're in power, manage to create divisions among themselves- unlike the Republicans who somehow always remain largely a solid force.

Tell that to Lincoln Chaffee, Olivia Snowe, Orrin Hatch...

  6. Hmmmm, see JR's response to my asking about this:

I'm pretty sure my Windows box is exhibiting the same behavior as what he's describing... Even though I've told it to handle MP3s and AACs through iTunes, they still appear with the Windows Media icon and if you just double-click the AAC, it doesn't know what to do [insert anti-Windoze snark here]. However, iTunes does handle the files just fine - all I did to get them in there was to drag them from the archive window into the Library window. (Note here that I've told iTunes to automatically manage my Library - people that don't do that will have to take the files out of the archive, put them where they want them to be organized, then add them.)

I tried seeing if going back to the source AIFFs and re-encoding and packing them on my XP box would make a difference, but sadly it does not. Even AAC files created by iTunes still get the Windows Media treatment [longer, more vociferous anti-Windoze snark]. It's possible that I'm missing something that identifies the AACs with iTunes (I hardly ever use iTunes on the PC, so I'm not that experienced with it), but basically, as long as the files are taken out of the archive and dragged directly into the iTunes Library window, they should work.

Sorry if this is a hassle for any of you guys.

  7. I have to say, to me the Miles of Music "It's a Cracker" guarantee is quite a statement. They're probably my favorite online music retailer, and they have yet to steer me wrong.

It's about time I placed a large order with them anyway... :thumbup

Yep, giving this album a 100% money back guarantee is a really nice statement from MoM. Early reviews have been great. Thanks for checking it out.

  8. I am not going but if you are in the area you should go for sure. Death Ships are a great band. My brother is the bass player and they really have a great sound. I saw them play with Jay last weekend in Iowa City and both Jay and Death Ships were fantastic. They serve as Jay's backing band for these shows as well as playing their own set. check them out at www.deathships.com and www.myspace.com/deathships. let me know what you think after going to see jay and death ships!

I like the Death Ships too. My review on GLONO says so.

    You, you, butt patter!

  9. Jen and I are coming :)

We rearranged our "rock tourism" schedule to avoid conflict with a ...

... Lindsey Buckingham show, and already saw him in Nashville at the Ryman.

Really looking forward to the Riviera set as well as the other two bands! I've never seen Quasar Wut Wut perform plugged in -- I did see them acoustic at Schuba's opening for somebody once upon a time, and they were terrific. And Healthy White Baby always kicks ass. :rock

Can anyone recommend any good places near Martyr's to have (a reasonably inexpensive) dinner before the show?

    NICE!

Martyrs' has good food, actually. And just North of there (on Lincoln--the same street) is Lincoln Square with lots of good little resturants.

You may have seen QWW open for Colin Meloy of the Decemberists. That was one of their very rare acoustic sets.

  10. I do hope some of you will join us at Martyrs' in Chicago tomorrow night for the CD release party for our new album CAPITAL (stream it now). It's part of the Glorious Noise Black and Orange Ball celebrating five years online. Also on the bill:

    HEALTHY WHITE BABY

    QUASAR WUT WUT

The album actually hits stores on November 21, but you can buy it early at the show.

  11. Campaigning for peace and doing something to achieve it are two different things. Protesting the Iraq War does nothing to make the world more peaceful (not like the prewar situation was peaceful anyway). And regardless of whether she is on the side of peace, can you honestly say that any of her actions have had any effect on making the world more peaceful?

Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of protesters who ended the Vietnam war.

But I'm not an apologist for Cindy Sheehan. I'm neither a fan nor a detractor. I think she's genuine but sometimes taken advantage of by others who have less than genuine motives. The point is she's dedicated her life to making a statement. Statements do count.

  12. Well thanks, all. The street date for the album is November 21 and will be available worldwide through Carrot Top Distribution (CTD). Just ask your friendly record store to order it.

It'll also be available through CDBaby, Amazon, and a number of other online stores as well as the usual digital distributors (iTunes, Napster, etc)

But if you CAN make it to the show, you'll get it a MONTH early! WOW! And this show will blow the doors off all previous GLONO parties. We're spending all our cash reserves (well, almost) on the show and will have lots of entertainment in addition to the bands on the bill. BIG BIG FUN!

Any help with getting the word is MUCH appreciated. Seriously. Please feel free to post links to the stream on bulletin boards or your blogs or whatever. And remember, everyone loves street teamers!
