  1. Anyway, his album is still kicking my ass 5 years after its release. May sneak its way into my top-50, all-time.

Hyperbole? Maybe. But I think that many of you around here will like it.

Joe is quite talented, his "Daydreams" and his band Joe, Marc's Brother's "Around the Year With" are already in my top-50.

Saw Joe do an hour long set on S&D this past January. Was the highlight performance of the cruise for sure.

You can watch some videos of it on YouTube...

  2. The Chicago Reader mentions that Wilco's own webmaster Ken Waagner is one of the panelists for this lecture on Monday in Chicago. The Reader says it is free of charge.

The ABC's of touring and playing out-of-town shows

    April 16th, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.

    Claudia Cassidy Theater

    Chicago Cultural Center

    77 E. Randolph Street

Once you book the gigs how do you handle all the planning, logistics, and business of playing out of town? How to arrange a tour yourself or have someone else do it for you. Getting your music and band ready for a gig or a tour date. What to bring on tour. How to pack your equipment for a tour. What equipment do you have to bring on tour? How to "advance" your out of town gig. What should you do when you arrive at the location of your out of town gig? What should you do between arrival, set up, sound check and show time? Why should you and how do you coordinate with other acts also on your tour or play at your same gig. The dos and don'ts of club/crew/staff/merchandise relationships at out of town shows and venues.

  3. You are in (or already live in) Chicago to see a wonderful benefit concert by our beloved, talented, and entertaining Jeff Tweedy. If you are wondering what to do after the wonderful SSS Vic security people rudely tell you "PEOPLE, YOU MUST LEAVE THE VENUE!!!" I've got just the thing. It is supposed to be cold that night (a low of 24 degrees) so you don't want to be hanging outside the Vic. You shouldn't go to some greasy spoon to stuff yourself with your 4th meal of the day either. Sleep? You can do that when you are dead.

Come to the Beat Kitchen and see The Honeydogs! They released a great album last year called "Amygdala" and have been playing a good mix of old and new tunes on their recent mini-tours.

    Friday April 6

    Beat Kitchen

2100 W. Belmont (a short 1.5 mile cab ride West of The Vic)

    Chicago, IL

    $10.00 Cover

    18 and Over show (MORGS!!!!!!)

    Honeydogs

Canasta -- these guys are great too

    Mark Mallman

Show starts @ 9:30pm, but with 3 acts The Honeydogs shouldn't hit the stage until ~11:30, you should have enough time after Jeff's set (even including the stealth Wilco encore)

Seriously, please consider coming out to support The Honeydogs. They put on a great live show.

  4. hey i was already directed to rbally.net and i got one good show...but i cant seem to download the tweedy show at the vic theatre. does anyone have any acoustic shows of jeff tweedy they can post or they can lead me too. i want to collect as much as i can. thnks

If you can handle SHN/FLAC files a great place to start is:

    http://download.owlandbear.com/

Some excellent quality shows are there ready for you to download and enjoy.

  5. Only one small complaint - after all these years seeing shows I still can't figure out why sound people can't mix in keyboards better. From where I was standing, the keyboards were MIA, lost in the bass, drums guitar mix. Also there was little point (sadly) in bringing in a horn section, because they also couldn't be heard.

Sam's right -- the show sounded MUCH better back from the first few rows.

Some shows they have those small on-stage front-row fill speakers for the PA, but last night they only had 2, one on each side to "fill" the main floor, in addition to the regular stacks.

One song into Tim's set I moved back to the 2nd railing from the stage, dead center. It is a nice sweet spot, excellent sight line, and everything sounded and looked perfect from there. Horns were low when they first came out, but after they told Stan to turn them up they were quite loud.

  6. live music has always been about living in the moment.

The older I get, the more jaded I find myself at live shows. Until this set. I haven't enjoyed a set of music this much all year -- and maybe in many years. The whole way down to Union Park I kept thinking -- how the hell is Jon's set going to translate during daylight, outdoors, in front of what -- 5,000+ people. There is no way this guy is going to be able to hold the attention of this crowd under these conditions. Boy, not only was I wrong -- but he exceeded my expectations ten-fold. He paced his set perfectly, integrated the machines and guests at appropriate moments, and looked like he was having more fun than we were. He even played on of my favorite Brion songs -- "Same Thing" right off the bat. Excellent way to ease a JB first-timer into a set. I knew we were witnessing the highlight of the festival when you saw the promoter (forever dubbed "fan boy") singing along and smiling through Jon's entire set. When the main set ended and Jon had cut maybe 15 minutes into Pollard's set -- I was shocked, but very happy, to see the promoter coaxing us and Jon out on to the stage for an encore.

I wandered over and saw an excellent, but anti-climatic set by Pollard. He even found himself wondering out loud who that guy was that played just before him on the other stage and cut into his set.

Uyen, keep us posted, cause have credit card, will travel -- to Largo.
