  1. Hey there folks. I am looking to buy the Being There 180 gram version vinyl edition online somewhere but cannot find it. Anyone have any suggestions? The site will need to be able to deliver to Canada (just an fyi).

    Thanks.

  2. Neon Bible is gorgeous and exhilarating, i'm very fortunate to have an advance and am now listening once a day, sometimes twice (like today!). i think the really good year was 2002 - YHF, Yoshimi, Sea Change, and, yes, Rush of Blood to the Head.

In my opinion, the best year for music within this decade has been 2003. Just off the top of my head, here are some of the albums that were released:

    The Wrens - Meadowlands

Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism

The Strokes - Room on Fire

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

Broken Social Scene - You Forget it in People

    !!! - Louden Up Now

    Calexico - Feast of Wire

The Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief (I was nto a fan but others like it)

    Longwave - The Strangest Things

The National - Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers

M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts

    Manitoba - Up in Flames

Ryan Adams - Rock N Roll & Love is Hell 1-2

Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People

    Muse - Absolution

My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves

The Postal Service - Give Up

The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow

Ted Leo - Hearts of Oak

    Twilight Singers - Blackberry Belle

Plus tehre were good albums out by Cat Power, Elbow, and The Stills. 2002 was good (all the ones you mentioned plus Spoon's - Kill the Moonlight) but in my opinion, 2003 owns it.

  3. i can't help but thinking dashboard was written solely for the purpose of having a catchy single to release to the radio stations. it's not like any of the other songs on the album (of what i've heard so far). i can see some executive getting the initial album, listening to it, and asking "where is float on?" and then demanding isaac go back and write a catchy pop song suitable for radio play

Are you kidding me? I think this is their poppiest album to date. have you not listened to "Fire it Up", "Florida", "Missed the Boat", "We've Got Everything" or "People as Places as Poeple"? They are all filled with hooks. I am sure Fire it Up will be the second single.

My only big complaint is I feel it is a little over-produced but the songs are so damn good that I think that it outshines the few lowpoints.

  4. I love Let Me Come Over as well (probably in my top 10) but I find Big Red Letter Day to be much more consistant. Mineral, Porchlight and Saving Grace qare my favs from that record. As far all of their albums, I would rank them in this order:

Big Red Letter Day > Let Me Come Over > Sleepy Eyed > Smitten > (self titled) > Bird Brain

Nice to see that I am not the only Buffalo tom fan here. By the way, they are due to have a new album out this May!

  5. If I was asked this question between 1993 and 2000 I would have said Smashing Pumkins - Siamese Dream. That album however has lost a little bit of its shine over the last few years though it is still in my top 5 for sure.

My absolute favorite album would have to be another album that came out durring the same time:

Buffalo Tom - Big Red Letter Day

if you have never heard this album, I encourage you to seek it out. I am sure it can be found at some larger indie / used record stores. While this 3 piece's album is not overly original or groundbreaking as many other albums listed in this thread, it has all of the elements to be a great, great rock album. Bill Janovitz is one of the most underrated story-telling songwriters out there. His lyrics are poetic and heartbreaking (at times). Each song is filled with hooks a plenty and holds up very well to repeated listens. It does not feel like a 90's grunge rock album and it has held up very well over the years. Please check it out.

  6. I have read online that people suggest that new records are cleaned before they are played. I have done this (cleaned them before play) and also bypassed this step as well and found most of the time there is still a bit of surface noise.

I recently dug out my copy of Smashing Pumpkins "Picieses Iscariot" which I had never played before, washed it with a Disc Washer, rinsed it with Distilled Water and then wiped it clean with two micro-fiber cloths. I let it air dry for two hours, give it a couple of swipes with my Carbon Fiber Brush and there are a ton of snaps, crackles and pops. I followed the same process with my copy of Wilco's "A Ghost is Born" (this was right out of the plastic wrapper.

Please can someone help me? Is it the carbon fiber brush I am using? Maybe it is static electricity that is causing the issue? ARRRRRRG.

  7. Ok one last question guys.

What sort of cables will I need to acquire to hook a turntable up to my receiver? I am not sure the exact input on the back of my receiver but it does a PHONO setting (it is a Kenwood from the late 90's).

What should I look for both on my receiver and on the turntable for inputs? Does it take regular RCA, or some special type of gable?

    Thanks again.

  8. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I think I will try to find me a album player locally though I am still unsure what I need (i.e. inputs to look for, direct drive vs. belt driven, good brands, etc.). I REALLY want to start buying vinyl real soon for some reason but I want to make sure that I can tell the differnece in the sound and make sure it is worth it before doing so.

Thanks again for the posts and keep them coming. It is good to see as many opinions as possible (though I am leaning more towards Louie's opinion, more for the sake of that is all I can afford at the moment.)

  9. Hi folks,

So, I am comtemplating in getting a new hobby and I think it might just be collecting vinyl. Here is what I need to know:

    1) How much is decent player with everything I need going to cost me? Also, what brand/player would you recommend? I would only really like to spend $100 on a player as I may not "get" the whole vinyl and do not want to invest a lot into a player (right now).

    2) For a music enthusiast, I really know little about the "vinyl" sound. Other then it sounding warmer and more fuller, what else is great about it? If albums are kept in very good condition, will you still hear hiss and pops when playing them or does that come from only unkept records that scratched, etc?

    3) Where are some good places to buy vinyl online OTHER then ebay? I know of Insound but that is it.

    Thanks in advance.

  10. I just did. I'll say this: I hate Cablevision and I really hate Dolan, but 1 meg a second downloads never get old. (Peel, your mix rocked, by the way. The sky marshal agreed, and apologized for macing me.)

Cablevision? Dolan? I don't think you were listening to my mix man.

  11. Hey folks. Well here is my inaugural mix. I really do not have a name or any cover art for it but as I was a little rushed in getting it out there. I will put more work into the next one, I promise. Anyway, hopefully you will like it. It is a mix of different genres and time periods but I think it flows together well. Anyway, here you go:
