  1. How is this?

    It looks fascinating.

It is very interesting and well written. Right now I'm still in the ancient monster section and it talks a lot about where the ideas of the monsters may have come from, storytelling styles, and the philosophy behind the fear.

It is not the fastest read but is not difficult, either. So far, I'd recommend it if is a subject that interests you.

  2. I really liked a good chunk of the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack (especially Lykke Li) and it looks like there might be some good stuff on the Twilight:Eclipse soundtrack coming out soon. I think I'm interested most in the Fanfarlo and Black Keys tracks.

    1. Metric – “Eclipse (All Yours)”

    2. Muse – “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)”

    3. The Bravery – “Ours”

    4. Florence + The Machine – “Heavy In Your Arms”

    5. Sia – “My Love”

    6. Fanfarlo – “Atlas”

    7. The Black Keys – “Chop And Change”

    8. The Dead Weather – “Rolling In On A Burning Tree”

    9. Beck and Bat For Lashes – “Let’s Get Lost”

    10. Vampire Weekend – “Jonathan Low”

    11. UNKLE – “With You In My Head (featuring The Black Angels)”

    12. Eastern Conference Champions – “A Million Miles An Hour”

    13. Band Of Horses – “Life On Earth”

    14. Cee-Lo Green – “What Part Of Forever”

    15. Howard Shore – “Jacob’s Theme”

  3. it depends what you want to spend and what you wanna be near. If I had a chunk of change and were going to LA, I would want to stay at the Chateau Marmont on Sunset. If you wanna be close to that area but (way) cheaper, there are some good places in Universal City. If you are interested, the start (or end, depending how you look at it) of Mulholland drive is in/near Universal City area. This is a really fun, curvy drive if you want to see the Hollywood Hills, fancy houses and great and scary views of the valley and the city. I've also heard that downtown LA is being revitalized- you may get a good deal on a nice hotel there.

I also HIGHLY recommend the Getty Center. It is an incredible free museum but so much more. It is perched on a hilltop above Bel Air and the view is outstanding.

I was just in LA and visited the Griffith for the first time since it was remodeled- it was great! Keep in mind that museums are often closed on Mondays- that might be a better Tuesday activity.

Santa Monica/3rd street is a great area but if you stay there, don't attempt to drive to the Griffith in rush hour- what a pain in the ass that would be.

  4. I don't listen to the Hold Steady, but knowing that Amoeba has 3 locations, I wonder if they got so many copies that everyone else got either 0 or 1 copy.

I went to a really little local shop here in Des Plaines, IL- Algonquin Records- and picked up the Flaming Lips Dark Side of the Moon LP. While, yes, it was $25, it also comes with a CD copy and it is a very pretty clear vinyl (even though it was supposed to be seafoam green). The record store guy told me that Warner Brothers wanted the record stares to remove the label on the plastic cover that indicated it was seafoam green- I don't know why anyone would of done that. plus, it would have been illegal because the same label also had the Parental Advisory.

My local shop also said they didn't bother with the Wilco LP set because it was so expensive. That was kinda weird because it seems like they carried every other Wilco LP available and they didn't want to shell out for this.

  5. The Straight Story is soooo good. there is at least one really odd moment that is totally him.

The Elephant Man was actually the first movie I ever saw- I was around 1. I don't remember that but it is no surprise to me that i am an oddball after all these years after that. I do love that movie, though.

Eraserhead I can't stand- it just creeps me out way too much. I don't like when Eraserhead and the mom lady kiss. EEEEEEEEEEEK!

  6. we got our dog at 8 weeks and for the first 6 weeks, he'd only stay in bed half the night. we couldn't let him cry because we lived in an apartment complex with very thin walls. we tried the pheromone spray- it is EXTREMELY expensive and didnt work. we also tried a ticking clock wrapped in a sock to emulate the heartbeat of the mom/brothers/sisters- didnt work. he sleeps in the bed now and we sold the crate before he even turned one. hes pretty much a person in this house!

  7. We got an FHA loan- worked great. I got a great rate and am actually refinancing with FHA next week at an even lower rate. I think it is just a little more paperwork and slightly stricter requirements about what you buy (like, you can't buy a condo in a complex with more than x% vacancies or, your can't buy a house if it is not a certain condition, etc).

If you don't have 20%, it actually may be one of the only ways you can go. everything else is so hard to get.

  8. I totally agree with 3 prior mentioned: Dead Man (such an awesome sense of place!), Babe 2: Pig in the City (saw this in the theater, SO not for kids but so beautifully made and touching... that little kitten's "I'm hungry!" gets me, Thelonious is so cool and the big scene near the end in which Babe must make a moral decision made me hold my breath), and The Lookout (really enjoyed this but didn't hear much buzz).

I have to include Lars and the Real Girl - which just made my day when I saw it - ,My Dog Skip, and Frozen River.

  9. any other word on what will be available (i found was john lennon, josh ritter, soundgarden, and sex pistols)? I may make a special trip to Laurie's.

the record store day website says i should follow them on twitter to learn the special releases but i don't do twitter.

  10. i'll be at the chicago show (excited to see DBT again). i hate how pricey this stuff is but it'll be a good time. plus, i didnt get u2 tickets for july so that makes this more doable. i'll probably need to open a savings account just to buy a few beers and crazy bread at the show, though!
