  1. I believe the north rim is partially or fully closed in winter, just a warning.

My favorite place on Earth is Monument Valley on the border of AZ and UT... you have to have a Navajo guide to go into the valley but there are tons at the park that offer touring services. Highly recommended.

The GC will probably be cold and/or snowy... don't slip. If you aren't lucky enough to have reservations in the park at the El Tovar, I think staying in Flagstaff is preferable to staying in Williams (both gateways to the park). Flagstaff has some historic buildings, a cute downtown, a world renowned telescope, etc.

From Iowa, you should take Rte 66 (or at least the main hwy that runs along the old route) by heading south from where you are and picking up the 44 in central MO and then getting on the 40 in OKC. There are tons of diners and roadside things to see off of this route (some are off the main road and you'll need to know they're there). I recommend looking at a few route 66 websites... you should be able to find a few good things. try roadtripusa.com for hints and stops.

  2. Did anyone watch the 60 minutes story about that town in Maryland that was the DHL hub? It brought me to tears seeing honest, hardworking families who are stocking up on food to make sure they can eat after they're laid off. My company did layoffs last week... thank goodness I was spared. Its such a sad reality and it is all over the country. Crazy.

  3. The travellers in the UK and Ireland aren't all ethnic Romany, I don't think. Most of the Irish ones aren't, anyway. Alison, did you ever see the show The Riches (I think it's cancelled now) on FX a couple of seasons ago? There are lots of Irish traveller camps in the US, and some of them still speak a form of Gaelic.

I never did see that show... thats nuts that they're in the US, how interesting! I wonder where they are most often found?

A cousin of mine in Ireland worked for a while at a school that served the travelling community. Classes were actually held on a bus, they'd follow the camp wherever it went.

There's a huge bias against the travellers in Ireland, so their lifestyle is a big political issue too, and has been for years. The singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl (father of Kirsty MacColl, and the writer of both First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Dirty Old Town :D) was a real radical type, he wrote and performed lots of songs about the travellers.

What a lifestyle... school on a bus! that actually sounds pretty fun... are the Travellers against going to school in a building, though? I'm curious why it was done that way.

Some people in Ireland still call them "tinkers", although I think that's pretty politically incorrect. I was in the Disney Store before Christmas, they're now marketing a "fairys" line (next big marketing scheme after the Princesses, I guess), featuring Tinkerbell, and there was a thing about how Tinkerbell's skills include mending pots and pans. I had never put her name together with that before!

wow, that is a very cool observation... she doesn't seem like the type to be mending anything! My mom is a fan of some band called the Wicked Tinkers. So from their name I would guess they either really love or really despise gypsies.

  4. hey, does anyone here know a gypsy? I'm super curious what they're like in this modern day in age. Wikipedia just told me that there are many thousands of them in the UK. All I have to go off of are the gypsy circus people in the U2 'All I Want Is You' video.

  5. My #1: Diet Coke (sweet, sweet love)

best out of a fountain with ice through a straw (I haven't been to McDonald's in years so I can't recall if I ever thought it was better than other places). next best in a COLD can, then glass bottle and then plastic at the bottom (ewwwwww.. I hate plastic bottles to pieces).

Coke Zero is nice to have every once in a while and real coke every once in a great while (usually at a party with 2 liters and plastic cups or something).

I am also fond of Diet Dr Pepper but rarely drink it.

Two other great sodas I never drink:

Ruby Red Squirt (or regular Squirt)

A southwest regional soda- Cactus Cooler... orange pineapple soda!!!!!!!!!

  6. i once went on a road trip from san diego to LA to san diego to las vegas to denver to st louis to chicago to louisville to ann arbor to cleveland to new york to philadelphia to asheville to memphis to carbondale to chicago to flagstaff to la to san diego. that was pretty fun. I think i got some of those places out of order.

i've been dying to take another road trip but i don't think it will happen this year. there is something about being young and unencumbered that makes a road trip so much easier and more exciting.

  7. Get an apt where someone else does the shoveling.

This doesn't always work. My landlords don't even shovel their own sidewalk/steps let alone ours (they live next door). My last apartment was similar- the walk would get shoveled but not until a day or two after it snowed.

  8. I was so busy this year that I didn't get around to posting my usual autumn thread. Although the season runs another month, here in Chicago the leaves have nearly emptied from the trees and the nights (and some days) have been sub-freezing. I'm still hanging on to a few pumpkins and enjoying the last few leaves dancing when the wind blows.

    in memory of autumn...
