Spawn's dad
looking at digital SLRs; anyone have the canon rebel? I was wondering about the XT versus the original model and if one was clearly the one to get over the other

Spawn's dad
at the risk of insinuating that he's your new VC boyfriend, how do you know he's using a rebel XT?

Wookies
I've had a Rebel XT since April. Can't say enough good things about it. Two drawbacks: the handgrip is way small and takes some getting used to and the timer button is really easy to accidentally hit with your nose. But those are pretty minor overall. The picture quality (even at ISO 1600), options and ease of use far outweigh any drawbacks. I've used it primarily for concerts, people and landscapes and been extremely happy with the results at all of them. I can't compare it to its predecessor, though, as I don't know anything about that camera. Here's a few shots from this summer. Shutterfly's a pretty shitty site in terms of display quality, but they'll give you some idea of sharpness and depth: http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...5108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d92...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d92...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d92...5108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d93...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d92...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d92...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d80...5138AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d62...6108AZMWLRy4cte My current lens arsenal: 18-55 (kit lens)28/2.850/1.8100/2.
Spawn's dad
assuming i decide to get this, and since I've not had an SLR in the last 20 years, should I start with the kit lens?
Wookies
should I start with the kit lens? For the slight extra price, it's well worth it as a starter. You'll likely want to upgrade pretty soon. It takes decently sharp outdoor daytime shots and covers a good bit of area but it's awful for lowlight/indoors (I hate using a flash) and I always find myself wanting some extra reach. I like primes for the clarity for all shots and as many show photos as I take, I needed faster lenses, so I got those 3 I listed above. I really want to add a 28-200 if I can find one at a decent price. Then I could just use that for all the outdoor shots and only carry the primes for shows. Just gotta keep telling myself it's only $$$. Edited August 11, 2006 by Wookies
Spawn's dad
thanks dude. my biggest regret is that we didn't get a couple extra threads out of this
SlowBurn68
I'm not a camera buff, but I bought a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-M1. It's a 5.1 megapixel with MPEG4 video and I love it: It cost about $400 Edited August 11, 2006 by Darkstar68
Wookies
I love the Cybershots. The Carl Zeiss lenses are impossible to beat for pocket cameras. I've got a P200 that I carry with me as well as the Rebel for the convenience and for the video feature. Can't go wrong with one of those at all. That sunset shot is awesome!
