Beltmann
Guster typically mentions how "now is the time we're supposed to leave and then come back," so they dispense with the artificiality. They just stay on stage and start what would, I guess, normally be the "encore." They certainly poke fun at how the encore has become an expected convention rather than a special event. jhc
I guess what sort of gets me is when opening acts think they are entitled to take an encore. Generally they aren't, but that rarely stops them. Can't say I've ever seen that - pretty cheeky.
quarter23cd
I think the joke-about-the-encore is almost as common as the encore itself. Can't say that I've ever seen an opening-act encore, except maybe if its a hometown band or something maybe they'll give them a little longer time to play. I've seen that, but never actually seen an opening band walk off and come back out.
