owl
My boss decided on a whim to get a new PC with Vista, and he wants me to transfer all the data from his old XP PC. Can anyone give me any advice on how to do this properly?
cryptique
Uninstall Vista, install XP, then transfer by whatever means. You said "properly"...
Duck-Billed Catechist
I think there is a tool to do this in Vista. http://www.microsoft.com/canada/smallbiz/p...w-vista-pc.mspx

a.miller
I'd suggest getting a hard drive enclosure that hooks up via USB (
owl
Thanks everyone, I tried the Windows transfer app, so we'll see where that takes us.
Hippycat
I just had a somewhat similar task over the last few weeks. A handy 2 gig usb thumb drive (super handy those things) and lots of copy/paste got the job done. And for all those that shit on Vista, well having had the opportunity to use it for the last few weeks, I must completely agree. Who would have ever thought that XP would be superior to anything? jenbobblehead
i hope the boss doesn't expect you to move not just data and files, but software as well because that never goes over well. you have to reinstall it all. So hope you have all the disks. But i have used the hd enclosure before and it works great!
Duck-Billed Catechist
I really like XP SP2. It almost never crashes.
owl
I did have a 320GB external drive, so that solved the storage issue. I'm not worried about software because most of his stuff is pirated anyway, I think.
