stooka
Lyle has been through Amarillo 3 times over the last few years, but ticket prices for this one was more reasonable ($33 ea) so the wife and I decided to check him out since we have been fans for many years. A local choir group was fortunate enough to back Lyle along with Sweet Pea Atkinson, Sir Harvey Bowen and Willie Greene Jr. The vocals last night were rich and sported a very wide range. What made the night a little special was the appearance of Sam Bush on mandolin. Evidently, he had some time-off and joined the tour for a stretch. Needless to say, he was incredible - as was the rest of the band of veteran musicians. Russ Kunkle sat in on drums and Allison Kraus' brother Viktor played stand-up bass. Cellist John Hagen almost stole the show from Sam Bush during a lengthy solo section for You Can't Resist It.Lyle had his usual dead-pan delivery as he spoke quite often to the crowd, making sure to acknowledge musicians featured in each of the songs. He played a lot of new material that sounded like his old material, but the bluegrass portion was terrific!!
cryptique
Wow, I'd love to see Lyle with Sweet Pea Atkinson and Sir Harry Bowens.
uncool2pillow
I used to love seeing Lyle live, but he seems to be losing his mojo. Glad you enjoyed this show, though. It's been a long time since he's really wowed me with his songwriting. His shows are good, but don't vary much from one to another. I did have the pleasure of seeing a 3 piece acoustic show at a beautiful old theater in Des Moines (Hoyt Sherman Place) many years ago. They really nailed "Friend of the Devil" that night. The acoustics in that theater were unbelievable. My wife was at home recovering from having her wisdom teeth removed and I still keep lying to her, saying it wasn't that good. ms. yvon
sounds like a great time! what a treat to get those bluegrass players in there! that the cellist might have blown sam bush away...well i just don't know what to think. must have been fantastic!
stooka
I don't know if blown-away would describe what happened, but that cat was skippin' the bow all over those strings. Maybe, "almost stole the show" was a little overstating it. However, had he finished by dousing the cello with lighter fluid...................
