LouieB
Let's lighten up things a bit, now that we are down to the wire.... The folks at Archeophone Records have brought together 22 wax cylinders from the Taft and Bryan election of 1908. These folks have done great work and for all you history buffs, you might want to check this out. I have not heard this material, but I am sure it would be rather interesting to hear William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan battle it out for posterity on the only available technology at the time, brought to us by the Edison Company. Undoubtedly things haven't changed all that much in the last 100 years, just better fidelity... LouieB
LouieB
I know this thread dropped like a rock, but they did a story on this on NPR and the sound of the material is actually really good. Unfortunately they didn't give the record company any press..but so it goes. LouieB
IATTBYB
Unfortunately it does not exist, but I would give my left nut to hear a recording of WJB's original Cross of Gold Speech at the 1896 DNC in Chicago. The conclusion to that speech is about the finest oratory regarding protecting the little guy from the powerful. If they dare to come out in the open field and defend the gold standard as a good thing, we shall fight them to the uttermost, having behind us the producing masses of the nation and the world. Having behind us the commercial interests and the laboring interests and all the toiling masses, we shall answer their demands for a gold standard by saying to them, you shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns. You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.
mfwahl
Why aren't our guys poetic like that anymore?
LouieB
I heard one of the guys on public TV complain that Obama's speech last night was too long (at 16 minutes). I know they talked for hours back in 1908. The cool thing about these recordings is they are the political first sound bites. These guys had to condence their points into two minutes. I plan to pick this CD up in the not too distant future. LouieB
