Not sure which it was, because I am not too familiar with either. I think it was Rugby, but at any rate, I got caught up with a game last night. It was pretty damn cool. Great game.

It was the Sydney Kangaroos vs. someone else(?) and I can't tell you much else, except that Sydney was 10 points up and the other team came roaring back.

I was kind of picking up some of the rules as the game went on: 1 point for getting the ball over the goal line on either side, 6 points for kicking it over in the small space between another 2 posts. Free kick if a team caught it on the fly inside an area near the goal. The team who had possession was not allowed to be touched if they could kick it to a teammate, who caught it on the fly. But if the ball hit the ground at any time, it resulted in a free-for-all scrum.

Goddamn exciting stuff.

Can any of you tell me more?

I believe thats Australian Rules Football! I saw a game when I was in Melbourne this year. I saw the Essedon Bombers Vs the West Coast. I had a good time even though it took me a while to get the gist! I had a hot jam donut (Yum) during the period break. All the consessions were reasonable and the people were really into it. It is nothing like events in the US.

Back in the olden days of ESPN, they televised Australian Rules pretty frequently. I loved it. I wish they'd bring it back and banish a lot of the crap they now broadcast (e.g., poker).

yeah, Aussie Rules FB is a great sport. Kinda like football mixed with basketball and soccer. I also miss the days when it used to be regularly on ESPN/espn2 - on what channel did you find it?

It was on a broadcast channel here in Chicago... one of the new digital channels that I'm picking up now.

there isnt any sydney kangraoos in AFL. there are the sydney swans, though. it must have been rugby, which we call the NRL. there's rugby league and rugby union, which i dont know the difference between them!. there is a conflict between the two sports. in New south wales, NRL is all the go, whereas in Victoria, its AFL. which used to be called VFL before interstate teams decided to crash our party

a few facts:

rugby is more like grid iron.

AFL/NRL use a weird shaped ball and the players beat the crap out of eachother (and get involved in drug and alcohol scandles away from the game- (hello ben cousins and brendan fevola!)

in soccer, the players are more civilised - but the spectators beat the crap out of eachother and through flares around the place.

the seasons run between march and september.

i'm glad craig enjoyed the bombers game (even though they probably lost!)

It wasn't the Sydney Kangaroos, although I do believe it was the Kangaroos.

And, it was the AFL, with the weird-shaped yellow ball. And it's an awesome game that I have to figure out how to find another broadcast of.
