LouieB
While everyone else is traveling like mad to see Jeff solo, I took a fairly leasurely drive over to Wicker Park and caught Glenn do a sweet solo show at an art gallery on the third floor over Dusty Groove Records called Corbett vs Dempsey. Nice gallery and Glenn played much of his usual wonderful repetoire (making a John Cage joke), which included Steve Reich, Joao Gilberto, Max Roach, and the Monkey Chant. He also finished up with an On Fillmore piece. Even though they said Glenn would play about 40 minutes, he actually played well over an hour. Glenn had the cricket boxes handed out to the audience to open during Monkey Chant. That was fun, to finally see the boxes up close (not that they are that special or anything, but it was still cool.) Apparently there was a thought at one point of selling them at the merch table when Glenn opened for Jeff, but Jeff put the kibosh on that idea. I guess I neglected to say this was an art opening for a local artist. The space is very nice and deserving of a visit if you are in the neighborhood. They have music there on a regular basis as well. LouieB
Three dollars and 63 cents
Thanks for the report, Lou. I thought Glenn was scheduled to play a solo show somewhere in Chicago this week, but I forgot to ask about it. I'm really looking forward to seeing him with Bang On a Can All-Stars next month. LouieB
Yea, Glenn commented that he wasn't used to people being that close to him. Needless to say since this was a gallery, there was no stage, just a few chairs people sitting around on the floor or standing in the back or right next to him. Amazingly there was no one else there I knew. When I clapped when he announced Monkey Chant he actually chuckled and gave a thumbs up. LouieB
Preferred B
Thanks for the stories, Lou. Way to represent! I wanted to go to this, and didn't realize until yesterday that it was in the late afternoon. Given that Jeff didn't come on until about 9:30, an intrepid soul could have done both. It was pretty much all over by 6:30, one could have gotten right on the highway and been in Champaign in plenty of time for Jeff too. (Two and a half hours to Champaign or a bit less if you realy speed.) Funny. It would definitely have taken someone more intrepid than me at this point that is for sure. Actually Glenn did ask why I was at his show instead of Jeff's and I mumbled something about his show being just as good, that I didn't want to miss his performance, etc. Needless to say in its own way it was, but it would have been nice to see Jeff too. (Did I mention that this show was free??) LouieB
