agonistes
Again pretty Noble Beast-heavy, but due to technical difficulties (an electrical fire, and the motor for his spinning amp literally exploding before the show) he seemed pretty thrown off, and they deviated from the set list with some older stuff in order to make up for it. I was ENTHRALLED that we got "Not A Robot, But A Ghost", and his solo openers were "Ethiobirds" and "The Water-Jet Cilice" -- two songs I never expected to hear live, ever, so it was totally worth the trip down from Denver. I hope his next shows go better for him, though -- he seemed really frustrated. I'm still looking forward to seeing him at the Ogden in Denver in two weeks... A side note: I really wasn't impressed with the venue and the management thereof -- doors were supposed to be at 7:30 (and we were let in an hour late -- also known as when the show was supposed to start -- due to the technical difficulties), so I showed up at 6:30 and got in line, which was already around the corner. TPTB didn't let us know that the one line was supposed to be for people who didn't have tickets until there was already another line for the people that did. There weren't any signs that said this. If I hadn't managed to get a great spot right down front, I'd be a lot more irritated, but I'd recommend thinking twice before going to see a show at the El Rey. tangara
Nice review! Sorry to hear the show didn't go very smoothly, but it sounds like he was able to rally a bit? I've heard he's been playing "The Water Jet Cilice" pretty frequently on this tour! So cool. I never expected to hear that one live, either. Were there cicadas? agonistes
No cicadas, unfortunately -- he transitioned in from "Ethiobirds" pretty seamlessly, though, so I was satisfied! And yeah, he rallied, and relied a lot on Dosh for it. It was great to see them interplay a little more than usual, even though the cause wasn't great.

Probably the best Andrew Bird show I've seen. The fuller band really serves his music well.
