Kevan
Im putting a Wilco mix together for a friend of mine who has never gotten into them and never heard more than a song or two. Im kind of a fresh fish myself, so I need your help. I need to get this guy hooked! Im sending him Ghost is Born in entirety, cause thats closest to his taste of the Wilco canon, I believe, so no songs off Ghost. Every other album, including Mermaid (I suppose? I haven't gotten into that yet), can be included. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!
Guest Francis X. Hummel
Just give him Being There & YHF.
Livin' in New Orleans
I know it's the new album and all... but Wilco (the album) is very easy to get into, in my opinion...I mean, I could see how it would be very accessible to a new listener.
perfectecho
My wife did this for a friend of hers a few months back before (the album) came out, who had some pretty horrible taste in music (until Lowell this year, the last 3 concerts she had been to were... Journey, eek!) and I think she did a decent job (though it would have been a bit noisier per my favorite wilco). I know she's bought 4 wilco discs since getting these, so i think making 2 cds to spread the word was worth it. And yes, I know there's some non-wilco material, but it works for the collections CD1: The Late GreatsPassenger SideCalifornia StarsI'm The Man Who Loves You(Was I) In Your DreamsSomebody Else's SongRadio KingHandshake DrugsOne By OneWalkenKameraThe Thanks I GetA Shot In The ArmRemember The Mountain BedHate It HereHummingbirdThe Ruling ClassHeavy Metal DrummerDreamer In My Dreams CD 2: Wilco The Song (Colbert)Airline To HeavenAshes Of American FlagsOuttasite (Outta Mind)Box Full Of LettersKingpinWhat LightShe's A JarAt My Window Sad And LonelyI Am Trying To Break Your HeartCan't Stand ItForget The FlowersHesitating BeautyEither WayPot Kettle BlackSunken Treasure100 Years From NowRed-Eyed And BlueI Got You (At The End Of The Century)
choo-choo-charlie
Thanks for starting this topic - I was thinkin' about it! I've yet to make a CD for a friend who's a new(er) Wilco fan, but have played a variety of stuff for him. He can't stand any of the noisy stuff...couldn't listen to Bull Black Nova, Spiders, coda to Handshake Drugs, etc. Basically a lot of the great guitar work. But, he does like Hummingbird, most of YHF, not too much of the A.M. through Mermaid stuff [the pop/rock/country] and a little bit of Summerteeth. He also digs Solitaire and I'll Fight quite a bit. choo-choo-charlie
I burned my older brother a Wilco mix of material from A.M., Being There and Mermaid Avenue I about six months ago. I know his tastes well and if he were to get into Wilco, this is what I'd get him with. So, finally, while driving to Tulsa today for a business trip, he finally popped it in his CD player. Called me after he finished listening, saying "why the hell didn't I listen to that earlier?" "These guys are AWESOME." Name-checked "Passenger Side," "Casino Queen," and "Hesitating Beauty" as favorites.
