So they give them the award but they have to perform?  I don't think Kanye had to perform to get his doctorate from the School of the Art Institute.

Well it's a benefit for the organization I would assume.  Dinners like this are an event for whomever are the patrons of the organization of event so they don't mind spending the dough, not so fans like us can watch Jeff and Mavis get an award.  Sometimes those two things do overlap, but not very often. I would imagine you would have to sit through a rather agonizing dinner with lots of speeches to hear them sing a couple numbers on a full stomach. They are certainly deserving though.

And yes, this isn't like a show that's been promoted. I would never have heard of it if I hadn't heard that Jeff conversation with Marty Lennartz.
