nalafej
Jeff Tweedy and the family band performed for one of the most enthusiastic crowds I've seen in a while! Complete setlist Western Clear Skies Betrayed One Tiny Flower Caught Up In The Past Sign of Life Forever Never Ends This Is How It Ends Low Key World Away KC Rain (No Wonder) Having Been Is No Way To Be Mirror Stray Cats In Spain Out In The Dark Cry Baby Cry Flowering New Orleans Diamond Light Pt. 1 No One's Moving On Feel Free Lou Reed Was My Babysitter --------------------------------------------- Twilight Override Family Ghost High on a Rocky Ledge (Moondog cover) Funk #49 (James Gang cover) Enough Number of Twilight Override songs played (out of 25): 18. “Special” songs: Jeff introduced this two song segment by saying they had prepared two songs because they weren't really sure either was going to work. He called the Moondog song a deep cut and sure enough at songs end polled the audience who nearly to a one reacted as if this was a new song to them. Contrast that with one of the biggest classic rock songs recorded on tape and you have quite a nice pairing. Jeff took lead vocals at the start of High on a Rocky Ledge before directing Sammy to take them on the latter part of the song. Sima sang lead vocals on Funk #49 sans instrument while her brother covered bass duties. Jeff and Spencer really nailed the classic rock vibes on that one - Joe would be proud. Support report: Macie Stewart, solo electric. Fantastic set, hitting the unfamiliar crowd with a rewarding set and received a big applause. I kinda wished she had time for 2-3 more songs. Her set: Finally/ Defeat/ Maya, Please/ Cold-Love-Friend/ Moving (Kate Bush)/ Garter Snake/ 3243 (Finom song)(with Sima) Venue vibes: Liberty Hall sits on the main downtown drag of Massachusetts Ave in Lawrence. The front of the building is getting some masonry work done and has a scaffolding up blocking the marquee - I had kinda hoped Jeff would alter the words on Feel Free to reference it (Feel Free Think of your name on a marquee...even if it's blocked by scaffolding). It's a 1,000 seat theater with an upstairs seated balcony, and a few levels of standing GA (for this show anyway). The stage is very low, like 3 feed lower than the barricade. The band was set up pretty darn close to the lip of the stage. The lights, for whatever reason, lit up not just the band, but the crowd the entire show. The first 5-10 rows of the floor anyway, but even looking upstairs was pretty light. Macie commented on the refreshing dynamic of seeing people during her set. Jeff said something similar from the stage and Spencer referenced it on his substack today. So...the band liked it. I could have done with less light in my face for 3+ hours from my spot one person back from the rail in front of Jeff. No biggie though! The venue seemed sold out although I know Wilcoworld was listing LOW TICKETS so maybe there was some standing room in the way back. The crowd really brought it! I thought we might get a legitimately earned and real 2nd encore. Jeff actually had to cut the cheers coming out of the encore break so that he could intro the band. Bits of tid, including Banter Corner: Jeff mentioned that he's been playing Lawrence forever and even had a pitcher of beer thrown at him just down the street. Jeff commented after a quieter song that he should have warned the crowd that there would be a few of those and they were the ones best without talking, but that he doesn't make the rules although everyone's neighbors might appreciate the quiet ones without talking. Interesting to have Forever Never Ends followed by This Is How It Ends. I'm too lazy to look to see if they are always doing this back-to-back, but it's kind of funny. Sammy using Jeff's mic for the Forever Never Ends concluding vocals was awesome and got a huge applause Other huge rounds of applause came for Sima/Spencer's Diamond Light end-of-song lock-in. Pretty cool. Bummed by the folks on the rail right in front of me. I wish people would silence their phones and keep them in their pocket - especially if they are so close to the band. Takes fellow audience member out of the moment and clearly annoys the performer given the performer's request for the phone to be put away. Nice to see this band do their thing supporting Twilight Override. I hope Jeff and Wilco make it back to Kansas again sometime. Seems rare? 1
uncool2pillow
We must've been very close to each other. Were you the guy who told the guy to silence his phone? My friend and I even wondered if they were weird samples from Sammy's synth for a bit.
nalafej
Just now, uncool2pillow said: Were you the guy who told the guy to silence his phone? I was! Guy had a video running on his phone that he didn't know about. I've since edited that detail as to not offend anybody, but yeah, my thought process at first was whether my phone was making noise, moved quickly into who else could it have been including Sammy doing something Poor Places like on stage. 1
