    I've only heard the shows from this tour, not having been there in person.

     

    But from what I can hear, Neal Casal is quickly staking his claim of Cardinals MVP, stealing the crown from Brad Pemberton.

     

    Listening to 'Dear John' from Manchester right now and he's killing it... so unbelievably good

    He has a tendency to force too many words in where they don't fit.

     

    I guess you're referring to 'Goodnight Rose'?

     

    Anyway, I freakin' dig that. Kinda makes me want to pick the song up and slap anybody in the face who says that all the guy does is sing generic songs. Who else tries to put 125 syllables into a 60 syllable sentence not every time, but just once in a song?!? (He did the same in 'The End' from Jacksonville City Nights)

    29 is EASILY Ryan's weakest full length album for me... easily

     

    Me too, but the one song that I freakin' love, which puts me at odds with nearly everyone else is 'The Sadness'. Aside from the whole mariachi 'yelp' - that song kicks butt. 'Carolina Rain' and 'Starlite Diner' are also great, but to me the other songs are much better in the live setting.

    Well, as a big Ryan Adams fan, I suppose that expectations were for another good album - and I'm not disappointed at all.

     

    'Goodnight Rose' has got to be one of his stronger tracks, and apart from 'Magnolia Mountain', I can't think of a better start to any of his albums. Probably the only song that doesn't seem to click is 'Off Broadway', but I've never really been too big a fan of the track.

     

    I don't get the complete distaste I've seen for 'Two' and 'Halloweenhead'. 'Two' may not sound like the most fantastic track here, but neither did 'Dear John' on Jacksonville City Nights, but that's been turned into one of the best songs he plays live. 'Halloweenhead' is just a fun track - nothing too earth-shattering, just fun.

    I am reminded of The Lost Crowes release last year - in that all of this stuff is pretty much put there to grab already. I suppose it will sound better and be in a nice package. I recall that Demolition was suppose to be a lot more than the one cd it ended up being - so we will see.

     

    Ryan's said that the stuff that's out there (48 Hours etc) will have proper mastering and mixing and perhaps there'll be overdubs to make them more of an album rather than a collection of demos. Plus, I think he hinted that we haven't heard all there's to be heard from these sessions.

     

    Why don't I leave it to the man himself to explain...

    He hurt his arm while skateboarding a couple of weeks ago. He's not playing at the moment, but that won't be the case for the later dates.

     

    FWIW, the Kingston show over at http://www.ryanadamsarchive.com is insanely good, Neal Casal does a great job handling the guitar all by himself and the dude playing piano added a lot (forgotten his name, Jamie something - produced Easy Tiger).

    What a tune.

     

    All the new songs from this show sound killer. He's got a freakin' awesome knack for throwing the most melodically perfect moments into the songs. The whole "i'm fractured from the fall, oooh and I wanna go home" part from 'Two' is a pretty good example.

     

    I haven't listened to the studio leaks yet (not until I can get the whole album anyway), but the live versions sound like all of Gold should have.

    He has a flair for writing - I'd say. The bit at the end about the MTV reunion and greatest hits album is funny as hell.

     

    "We're fucking going to have straight fucking lyrics that any fucking person can sing." as an example

     

    "mmm, spice huh? I'm the rice"

     

    Love it how he devotes a whole chapter (albeit a chapter that's only half a page long) to detailing what was on tv when he got his first bj. Any other rock star and it would just be a complete waste of time, but Dave just throws it out there as an aside, or an fyi.

    OK, one night after (and a full day of work later) and the show still keeps coming back to me. Little things like

     

    *Jeff alternating between electric and acoustic guitars for most of the main set. He hardly played two songs in a row with either.

    *Jeff noting that although we were the smallest crowd of the tour (small venue), we were easily the loudest

    *Jeff thinking that we talk like pirates.

    how was the performance??. nels told me they had an 8am flight out sydney on sunday morning which would have given much time for a rest

     

    They were on fire - no signs of fatigue at all.

    So many lightweights on that list.

     

    Any decision other than 'Gala Mill' is a pretty ordinary one. Doesn't matter if it's maybe not as good as 'Wait Long By the River...', it's still 10 times better than anything Augie Bloody March will ever put out. And here's thinking I have to sit through the Augie March singer before I can see Wilco next weekend. May spoil the whole night for me... or maybe not.

    So am I correct in thinking that if I buy this now, I'll get it again (and pay for it again) when I buy the Archives box?

     

    No concrete evidence either way as of yet. I wouldn't be surprised if you do get them as part of the box, just as I won't be surprised if there's just a provision in the box to slot them in, chronological-style.
