  1. This is one of the worst books I've ever read:

    51EQAHFVD6L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

The story is fairly compelling, but the writing is horrid. Not only is Brown an awful writer, but his editor is obviously an idiot.

I read the opening chapter and then duct taped the book shut. No I didn't, but it was painful to read so I stopped.

  2. I did not leave the movie with the same feeling the book gives me, which is fine. I thought it was a breath of fresh air, and that the monsters were very impressive. Also loved the scenery.

I don't expect to "get" David Lynch's movies--I accept and enjoy them for what they are, for the ride they take me on. I felt that way with this one--I jumped onto Max's perspectives from time to time, sometimes I was lost myself. but I enjoyed it all the same.

    I also enjoyed "Up"

Maybe David Lynch should have directed WTWTA! Hmm, doesn't star a woman-in-trouble, though. Oh well.

I don't have much else to offer here besides to each his/her own. I felt very little after the opening sequence of this movie, and I'd like to think it isn't because I've lost my inner child or that my heart runs cold. I picked up on how the Things relate to Max's mind, the real world/fantasy world connections. I didn't need a grand adventure story (though I wanted them to have a little more fun), and I didn't need a lesson learned or some obvious step towards adulthood. I wanted depth of emotion, and what I felt I got was implied depth, a surface that rang hollow. I thought it was lazy and grasping.

Also, I wished the Things would growl more.

  3. I think it's more when the song title could easily lose them. For example: why can't a title like "I love you (so much)" be "I love you so much", or "(One of these days) I'm going to Denny's" do the same thing or just shorten it to "I'm going to Denny's". It can also be annoying when it seems like an alternate title, or something that looks tagged on for mystique.

Wilco-specific: I give Spiders (kidsmoke) a pass because I have an idea about its context, it's a song that went through revisions and without thinking too hard about meaning here, it looks like the song "kidsmoke" was put into the small creature motif of AGIB.

Leave Me (Like You Found Me) - No!

Outta Mind (Outta Site)/Outta Site (Outta Mind) - Okay!

I Got You (at the end of the Century) - No!

Does anyone else share this pet peeve? Anyone else think too much about trivial stuff?

  4. Hmm, see I like 'Some Time in NYC' and 'Whatever Gets You Thru The Night'. I also like McCartney, Wings, etc. I'm starting to think it's unfair to compare their solo careers, because I think they were after different things. Actually, that probably started halfway through their Beatles career.

  6. I am interested in why. I really hate it when someone makes a statement like this and offers no statements to back it up. Not to say that your opinion is wrong, but it is invalid because you make no attempt to expound on your statement.

I am trying to get as much information on this movie as possible to make an informed decision on whether I should take my five year old.

Invalid for your methods of movie-going, but it was godawful.

Concessions: Visually great shots, and however they did the costumes/CGI was well done, this movie could have held a strong tone with the design if it wasn't all over the place.

I was completely on board with this movie literally until Max meets the Wild Things, who aren't Wild but Morose, Neurotic and at times Sociopathic Things. I could tell Jonze/Eggers were really trying to get inside the head of a kid, and they almost did, which is admirable, but "horseshoes and hand-grenades", because coming close and failing is still failing.

Characters were superficial, they constantly refer to personal struggles that are never explained or resolved, they come and go for no reason, and disturbingly they're either hurt easily or impervious to pain. Terrible stuff happens to the Things, especially by way of main-character-Thing, and they don't seem to care, they just stand there.

I was receptive to the idea that quirks, discontinuity, or anything confusing about the film might be a function of "this world is in Max's head", but after seeing it, I call bullshit. It's half-baked. It's a banal and incoherent hour of good set/costume designs wrapped in a stock scene of childhood angst.

It was boring, and even a little creepy, but mostly boring. I blame Eggers.

  7. what does OTM stand for? On the mark?

To me, Embryonic is like hearing the early era Lips except they know much more musically in how to get themselves across. This record is so much more about conveying feeling and letting the song take form rather than constructing a song and trying to get something out of it. If that makes sense.

  8. I am being honest when I say that I am not directing this at anyone here, but I have certainly noticed that the chorus of praise for this album has gotten much louder and much more hyperbolic since Pitchfork's 9.0.

I'd give more credit to the album actually being released.

edit: I see that point has already been made.
