  1. Also: the red mittens are back-ordered on the website. Can you set aside a pair for me when the next shipment comes in?

They will definitely be included in my welcome pkg for you and Trish. For me, the best part of the Olympics will be playing host and tour guide for so many of my favourite people. :cheekkiss

    Things I'm also excited about:

    Wilco

My husband somehow managed to get tix to the men's and women's gold medal hockey games, plus a few other cool events. (I rarely admit this in public, since I would be strung up by most everyone I know.)

    Stephen Colbert!!!! Love. Him. :canada

  2. Kelly Hogan has many credits to her name, aside from the Jody Grind also. Sadly she no longer lives in Chicago, but she was a fixture with every band that played the Hideout for many years. It is really nice to know she now has a more than steady (and one that must more than pay the bills) with Neko.

Love, love, love Kelly Hogan! I've seen Neko several times over the last 10 yrs, and the shows with Kelly were the best, by far.

  3. Glad the West is feeling the love - but as I stated before - noone ever goes to Newfoundland... sad really... Still not a full Trans-Canada tour in my eyes...

True. As far as I can remember, the White Stripes are the only band to visit every Province and Territory on a single tour. Still, you've got to give Wilco credit for crossing the country in February. Brrr.

  4. Beautiful is hard to argue with. And on a real island! If you can have the roadies drive across Canada, I think they can make it over to Victoria. I'd love that because then I could take the Clipper over.

Greater Victoria is about the same size as Halifax, I think. And as you point out, it's only a short ferry trip from both Seattle and Vancouver.

  5. No offense, but do you really think it is feasible for Wilco to play anywhere in BC but Vancouver? It's not like there's gigantic population centers dotted around the province, and it's pretty spread out. I'm not sure why they should feel ashamed of themselves.

Victoria, a beautiful city with a major university, attracts artists like Leonard Cohen, etc. Neil Young played a benefit concert in Duncan, BC (also on the Island) in 2004.

Huge props to Wilco for crossing Canada in the dead of winter - this is a right of passge for all Canadian bands. I imagine the Sadies have done it a hundred times.

This reminded me of Hard Core Logo.

  6. I overheard the following conversation, just before Neil's set:

Guy smoking pot: "NEIL YOUNG, man!!!

    Cop: Yeah, I'm so stoked!

    Goin' Back

    Powderfinger

    Pocahontas

    Birds

    Sail Away

    King

    Long May You Run

    Light a Candle

    Human Hwy

    Hold Back The Tears

Sarah McLaughlan was on after Neil (!) so I decided to call it a night. Don't know if he joined Sarah and Sheryl Crow on stage at the end (I'm guessing he did).

  7. Guitar Player magazine interview - by way of Thrasher's Wheat:

Cool. I'm going to pick that up.

A little off topic, but this is a great quote:

Listening to Young play guitar is the aural equivalent of watching a man wrestle an alligator, with all the chaos and drama that the image implies. No matter how sweet the melody he wrings from his legendary black 1953 Les Paul or weathered Gretsch, it has serrated edges that glisten dangerously, like tiny shards of broken glass. When it comes to guitar playing, we've always admired Eric Clapton's elegance, Jimi Hendrix's psychedelic daring and Joe Satriani's precise shredding. But it's the raw, craggy, "fucked-up-ness" of Neil Young's guitar work that satisfies our most primal musical sensibilities.

I've got tix to see Neil play acoustic on the beach (at Ambleside Park, that is) in September. I'm even willing to put up with Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan for the privilege. Now that's true love.
