  1. did anyone notice Nels go a little batshit during one of the first songs to rock out. he wa splaying his slide & I think he cut his finger or caught it soemhow because he spun around & flung his slide into the crowd and then was shaking his finger like it was hurt. at the end of the song Jeff asked him if he was ok & got the person to pass the slide back up and Nels apologized to whoever it hit

  2. for anyone that wants it, here's my torrent:

  3. I'm surprised to hear that. I have never seen a show at Const Hall where I even thought the sound was anything more than a muddy mess.

I wish bands would bypass Constitution Hall for The Warner Theater. Widespread Panic has been playing there the last couple years & the sound is very rich

het tomthub: I usually use a good pic when I post my torrents. would you mind if I used one of those?

  4. anyone know exactly what songs the Total pros played on? I'm making a text file for my recording & wanted to try to get it right. so far I have:

  7. cbd's is definitely the best as I have downloaded them all and can say that with the utmost confidence.

It's funny, I was in the upper right-hand side of the stage area and told my buddy "Whoever has that rig back there knows what they're doing and I can't wait to hear it!". The next day I was re-living it with much pleasure.

    Thanks cbd!!!

    thanks, I'm e-blushing!

thankfully I get to tape that venue a lot and thru trial & error know how to make my gear sound its best in there

  8. Hi cbd.

I was curious to know if all of these mics were all part of the same source, of if other tapers "piggybacked" your mic stand.

A mighty big thank you, too, for taking the time to tape, track, and distribute this show. It was awesome to relive it!

    cheers,

    b.s.

there are 3 seperate sets of mics on that stand. A set of "full bodies" on the top & 2 sets of compact mics clamped to the same stand. There was another stand right directly in front of this one as well that had 1 other set of mics on it.

great pics in that other thread by the way

  9. I was in the 5th row and I asked the guy about it afterwards. He said Jeff confiscated the camara because he was taking pictures. Actually, Jeff was really nice about it. He came out and shook the guy's hand and explained everything to him.

I still think Wilco should get involved with these guys; Encore Series.

I understand that they have an open-taping policy and that's fine, they can keep that, but I'd like to be able to buy something that was professionally recorded and not have to worry about having something to trade so I can download some guy's bit torrent file. Besides, I ain't got shit to trade anyway.

If I ever get the chance to meet Tweedy I'm going to ask him about this.

huh? have you ever used bit torrent? the fact that you don't need to have anything to trde or send blanks for a b&p and the ease & speed which it allows a show to spread are the reasons it has become so popular.

I for one hope Wilco doesn't go the instant live (or "encore series") and start selling their shows. The grassroots, open source taping & trading have helped a lot of non Wilco fans get shown the light over the last few years

  10. I've been out of the loop on Ryan for awhile. Has it been just lately where he's playing older stuff from his catalog? I remember shows from back around Gold/Demolition where he only played current songs or newer/unreleased stuff. His new stuff sounds solid. Kinda makes me wish I had seen him in Charlottesville when he came recently.

this year especially he's been playing a lotof the back catalogue. Those older songs seem to have replaced teh Dead covers he was playing a lot last year

    14 freeway to the canyon

that's the song Neal Casal sings.

  11. Ryan Adams just cancelled a few dates a few weeks ago & word on the street (whatever that means) was it was to do SNL. I have yet to hear that anything is confirmed yet. Who knows?

nope, his cancel was to film a video with cast members of some lame ass TV show (October Road maybe??) that uses a bunch of his songs

  12. yeah, I feel for all of you guys who had tix.

spoon did something similar a few weeks ago. they wiped out like 4 or 5 dates to do SNL, so who knows. Hopefully they are being cancelled for something positive, rather than negative for the band.

yea Spoon also cancelled 2 back to back nights at the 9:30 Club in DC to play one opening set for the shins at merriweather post :ohwell

I think this is pretty bad form on the part of Nonesuch. I mean, the venues/ticket sellers must have known about this at least yesterday, and still no word from the band/band's management via wilcoworld. How hard can it be to post a reason for what appears to be an abandoned national tour (albeit a handful of dates - okay, so I'm sensationalising a little here...) Am I spitting my dummy out here or is it a fair point?

what does the record label have to do with cancelling shows on a tour? (rhetorical question. the answer is nothing)

and I don't know what "spitting my dummy" means ....... but I like it!

  13. that's weird about the Heartless Bastards breaking up. Something tells me that's just some normal band frustration & give & take instead of a true break up. They have dates still listed & lasy Fall put out there 2nd consequitive well reviewed album on Fat Possum. They have had a nice run this year opening for Lucinda Williams, Hold Steady & Wilco in addition to their own club tours

  14. you know with a couple days to think about it, I still really loved the Charlottesville show. Sure, while basking in the post show glow we all think we just saw the best show ever played. In this case, it probably wasn't *the* best I have seen out of 30+ Wilco, 3 Uncle Tupelo & 4-5 Tweedy solo but certainly the longest and in the top few I have seen. As the show started with a beautiful Sunken Treasure I thought what other band would (or could) pull one of the slowest songs in their catalogue to open a general admission, open floor show with a boisterous crowd & then just nail it like that! Jeff seemed to serve notice that he was gonna own the crowd & you could hear a pin drop as Nels started filling in the spaces with the lap steel near the end. Things were a little loose here & there for a while afterwards but the band was clearly having fun & digging a very appreciative crowd. Not the best or most lively Handshake I have heard but it was crisp and for once the set didn't need that song to be a anchor. Impossible Germany picked up steam afterwards, and once we got past Hummingbird (which has always been the pee break song for me) I thought the momentum picked up & stayed that way through the end. For me the 2nd encore took it from a good show to a great one and coming back out for Spiders when they had already played almost 2 1/2 hours sealed it.

Maybe others had or have different expectations but all of mine were met & exceeded. I also think where you see a show from has a lot to do with how you perceive it. I know plenty of people really want to be up front against the stage but I personally have never understood why. Its one of the worst places for the sound since you are generally hearing small fill speakers planted down front instead of the actual PA system that Stan is dialing in. Likewise you don't get a full visual appreciation for all of the interaction between all of the band on stage and I think you lose some of the "feel" for the show. I also think you have to expect the liklihood or at least the potential for hassles down that close. All the signs were there: You're in a spot (ie: closest to the band) that lots of other people want to be in, its a Sat. night, an outdoor amphitheater with no seats, an open floor & GA seating, a college town, etc.......... We taped from about 25 feet back dead center and had no assholes around us, just a racous but appreciative crowd.

    Ok, here's a few pics

  15. Just in front of a computer for the first time post show. I thought the show was a slow builder, and perhaps contained too many SBS songs for my liking but really built towards the end of the set and on through three ridiculously high-energy encores. I was right in front, just right of center stage and as is often the case with GA shos in drunken college towns, there were some Class A assholes to deal with. About midway through the main set a couple came down from out of nowhere and pushed their way right in front of those of us who had been around for hours in line and down front and really pissed off most everyone in my area. The guy was drinking out of a flask and both of them talked incesantly and we're generally disruptive. Later still they pulled a third person down front from behind and more words we're exchanged yet amongst 6 or 7 off us and them. When they tried to pull a fourth person down front, we blocked out two of them from the stage altogether and the guy got real pissy and started cussing. They finally left the area to much applause. Then Wilco launched into the most ridiclous encores I've seen since the first show In Asheville in spring '03. They were on fire and the crowd was responding with dancing, singing and lots of energy. When they kicked into the first chorus of Spiders two more drunken guys spilled down into the front out of nowhere, and many of us, told them to keep moving and to get out of our way. One did, but another started flailing around and crashed into myself and my partner. I lost my cool and pushed him rather aggresively to the front of the stage, when a bouncer who had witnessed the whole scene, came along and cleared him out of the area. It was unfortunate that it ever came to that, but a few too many drunks in one night caused it all. Sorry for the long rant, but I thought I'd add a little color to what was going on down front.

Also played in the soundcheck was When The Roses Bloom Again and Magazine Called Sunset. It was clear as a bell two blocks away on the mall. A very solid tour-ending show and apparently the last show that Wilco's tour manager will be a part of, as he has a kid on the way, and is retiring from the road.

come on dude, you saw a 2 1/2 hour tour ender and 98% of your review was about the crowd? sure it sucks but that's been happening at GA shows since before we were born.
