We're really overdue for the next ice age. The pattern's been 100,000 years ice age, followed by 10,000 years interglacial. This interglacial's been around about 11,000 years, and is possibly being extended by what used to be called global warming. Under the assumption that an ice age would tend to slow and eventually reverse population increase, I have to blame the interglacial that didn't know when to leave the party.

Not to worry - Malthusian cycles take care of everything. It's always been "technology grows arithmatically, population grows exponentially." The crash will come, then we start again.

*Sigh* Really don't wanna get into it (my leanings probably are pretty similar to those of Mr. Tweedy), but making sport of your country to an overseas audience - even as a joke - just rubs me the wrong way. Ya don't have to come back, Jeff.

Guys on base means pressure on the defense and in the pitcher's head. Unless I really, really need that run, I'd say a double or a homer are of pretty much equal value. In your big innings, homers are more likely the period, while doubles are commas.
