  1. O.K., here's a dumb question, and it probably comes down to semantics.

Looking at Nonesuch's Web site out of curiosity to see what they're selling the vinyl set for, they have a joint press release announcing the release and the start of the current tour. Among the "personnel," it lists:

Mastered for CD by Nick Webb at Abbey Road, London, UK

Re-mastered for vinyl by Robert C. Ludwig at Gateway Mastering, Portland, ME

So, my question is, "re-mastered for vinyl"? Does that mean Ludwig remasters the master done by Nick Webb, which was done for CD audio? Or would Ludwig go back to the original mix from Jim Scott and Stan Doty and move forward? If it's the former, how much would vinyl enhance the experience? One of the knocks of digital vs. analog is the issue of ambiant noise, and that it doesn't neatly fit into the world of ones and zeroes. A master made for a digital environment ignores, or at least doesn't acutely consider those aspects that make vinyl listeners ooh and ahh.

Legit question. Ask them and find out.....

...let us know if you hear anything.

  2. Just a mediocre happening today which I thought I would share with all you good folk.

I was listening to my iPod, on shuffle. A live Wilco track comes on (forget which one...), at the end of the track someone in the crowd screams out "I'm a Wheel". My iPod then shuffles to "I'm a Wheel".

    Highlight. Of. My. Day.

I think I need to go back to work already.

    [corrected tpyo]

Huh, what's it say about my life if your post is the highlight of my day? Just a bunch of average Joe's here on the internets, I guess.

  3. Happy news about your expected baby, Hi-Rose. Good luck seeing Wilco, hope you get to. If not, maybe you can take solace in that I think you've just named Wilco's next album...

    Mischief of fate...?

  4. That was great! I actually logged on while it was playing because I wanted to say how I thought that maybe JT's comments may have been misconstrued, but then he started bantering about rednecks before they played "Casino Queen", and that was feakin' hee-larious. His expression was very funny. What's the deal, indeed.

I am now listening (not watching because I'm typing) to Neil sing "Sail Away". I am very happy at the moment.

Join yer local CSA, Co-op, go to the public market, whatever have you. Eat up and enjoy.

  5. I've been out of town working all week and therefore missed all of this. I love that they came out with BBN at Farm Aid, I bet Neil likes that song. Anyways, I'm intrigued by what these comments from Jeff were. He's a polite guy and I'm wondering if it was apparent to the crowd in general that they were directed to anyone in particular.

I happened to be working in Maui (beats working in Toledo) and I was driven through Wille's town where he owns a house, past his street. Very cool.

  6. However much I envy you, thank you all for the reports. They make me smile widely and I too am looking very much forward to the Them Crooked Vultures release. Everybody's gotta rock hard once in awhile.

I really do wonder what sort of backstage banter there was between these two bands, if any. They couldn't really be more polar opposites, but they are both two of my favorite bands (QOTSA, that is. JPJ goes without saying as a favorite.)

  7. My wife and I were watching "Ashes..." last night and lo and behold, there was the ubiquitous bbop down front at Tipitina's. How do you do, bbop? We met at the first MSG show last year, I introduced myself after I recognized you from a photo on this here fan site. I thought it was funny spotting you in the film and since I enjoy reading your reports and appreciate the dutiful setlist updates, here's your official thread (is there another already, perhaps?)

We were at the Ryman show up in the balcony and were fooling around with our 7yr old son, asking him if he could pick us out of the crowd as we paused the DVD. We were watching the movie out of order, so it was a surprise to actually see a familiar face in the crowd after all.

Anyways, here's to the current streak the band is on and we'd love to get to Toronto. Lewiston was great and I'm greedy for more. I've written somewhere else that hopefully we'll hear some official live recordings at some point, as the performances on this tour are the best I've heard yet, and I'm sure they will continue.

  8. I've seen them a dozen times since '03 including 2nd row at the Chicago Aud, Radio City, the Ryman and up close in my own hometown of Ra-cha-cha last year and this last one ranks with the best. 2nd only maybe to the Ryman show last year (and only becuase of venue prestige.) These guys brought it on Sunday and I thought the sound was fine (from row S, at least.) I agree that At Least...was a barn burner and Hoodoo was something that I've never seen before, and I felt like I was witnessing a great and lost artifact from a beautiful and psyche wrenching plane of consciouness (call me gushing.) Have never seen Can't Stand It that I can recall and it rocked more than I thought they could rock it. California Stars was simply a harmonic party and Bull Black Nova borders on high performance art. You Never Know would've made me levitate but you can't have everything. I love this band.

Quick sidenote, hindsight is 20/20 of course, but I think they may have pulled the trigger a little early on the tour doc. These shows need to be filmed and here's hoping some official live audio recordings are put forth sometime.

  9. Jeff also did a funny (at least to me) Springsteen impression at the start of the encore when he emerged sans jacket in his sweat-soaked black shirt with sleeves rolled up to the elbows and Stratocaster dangling behind him by the strap. Maybe you had to be there.

Ha, that is funny. I can see it. Witty fellow, that Tweedy. Those guys are living the life, I'm telling you. Playing with all these musical icons is becoming commonplace for them, but they do show their respect and admiration. Who's left for them to play with for crying out loud(another thread)?

    Nice report bbop!

  10. I just downloaded the Washington show from the DVD and i was hoping it was from the 1-26 show which featured Blood of the Lamb... But anyways does anybody have a sendspace link or something of Blood of the Lamb from any 2008 show, Nashville would be awesome because I was there...

I'm just chiming in to say how much I enjoyed that song at that Ryman show. Great rendition with the Total clarinet playing Pro and very cool lighting design. I was sincerely hoping it would make the DVD (we saw the cameras and knew one would be released ultimately...given Sunken Treasures' success and all.) I have that visual burned into my brain.

  11. From Wikipedia:

As of 2006, the Chesterfield Kings are engaged in a lawsuit with Armand Schaubroeck, owner of House of Guitars, over nonpayment of royalties records released on Mirror Records from 1984 through 1997. Andy Babiuk and Greg Prevost are longtime employees at the House of Guitars. In the suit, they are represented by lawyer Paul Nunes, who has played keyboards on several of their albums.

It's not the sort of place you go to to pick something up, you just kind of poke around until you find something interesting. Of course, I'm very much not a musician - if I were I'd be afraid to enter the store....

Irondequoit Wilco fans UNITE!!!! (I'm north of Titus between Culver and King's Highway)

I worked Bahama Mama's "farewell" concert at the Triangle back in 80. I don't think any of the bands they went on to are even still around. But I agree - a reunion would be funny but cool.

And I'm laughing my ass of over referencing Skycoasters fans on this board.

Me..I'm off of St. Paul between the park, just south of Titus. Irondequoit hearts Wilco.

I know that Ron played in the Park Ave. Band in the '80's, but no longer (They, however, are playing again). I used to go to the Warhouse underage to see them. All the Bob Marley and Dead you could stand, which for me was alot more then than now.

If yer headed to the show, there's some people meeting at Selena's before hand.

  12. My apologies for perpetuating a false rumor - sometime between 4PM and 8PM the above number changed the recording and there is NO mention of an opener at all. Looks like Kliph got through after all....

So, in an attempt at atonement, here are some more viciously false rumors for openers that almost no one will get:

    The Skycoasters!!!!!!

    Bahama Mama reunion!!!!!!

    Chesterfield Kings!!!!!

What amazes me, though, is you can go up to anyone who works there, ask about the most obscure title, and they'll casually walk over to some stack of boxes, throw a couple around, and viola!

The place def looks like a tornado's gone through, though.

You guys are cracking me up with yer referneces. Skycoasters would s-u-c-k because they do, Bahama Mama would be funny but cool and the Chesterfield Kings would simply rock! (forgive me if I've offended any Skycoasters fans, however I doubt there are any on this board) I used to go see Immaculate Mary at the Playpen. For those not in the know.....they are Rochester's answer to the band in Heavy Metal Drummer. Their lead now does an acoustic alt country thang.

..and as far as the HOG goes, it was Mecca when I was a kid who lived across town from it. Now I live down the street from it, my kid plays t-ball with Bruce's and when I stop in there, Armand and I will have a chat. The only time I ever went to a meet and great was there and it was with The Replacements and I cannot believe it is 3 months short of 20yrs ago.

thanks for giving me old home day on the board. Can't wait until Saturday!
