  1. believe me - it's not as easy as you think to be the voice of reason to a teenager - especially a teenage girl. I have done everything in my power to give Emily a foundation of empowerment and independence - but in the same token, our children grow up and make their own choices - that is part of being independent. Emily has struggles which I will not post publicly- to protect her privacy and individuality - but things are not looking rosy for her right now and as her mom I am desperately trying to plug the holes which keep growing in size and number - tearing apart her life as she she grows mo
  2. Kevin - I welcome your additions to my list - I could add to it even more......the culture of which I speak knows no racial or gendered boundaries.....it is an infection of the worst degree.....and only seems to be getting worse. Women are selling themselves out left and right to fit these molds of what it means to be "meaningful" and "valued" This culture of shallow, celebrity obsessed, materialistic, hypersexualized crud gets more and more out of control as the days pass......It is quite sad.
  3. Both Imus' comments and the perpetuation of racist and/or misogynist stereotypes via mainstream hip-hop, popular culture, Girls Gone Wild, etc etc are serious problems in this nation.....it has been said a lot this week - as women (regardless of race) make strides forward in society, culture, politics, etc there is an extreme backlash against them coming from a number of directions...... The blatant misogyny that is happening in our culture right now sickens me as I try and steer my daughter into a direction that will enable her to be a strong, empowered woman - this culture is trying to pi
  4. I was wondering when this was going to come up on here.
  5. yeah, it is still snowing out here....but the wind has died down....
  6. some really loud yuppie guy sitting next to me is talking about how great it will be to go to the Cubs game today and I don't hear a hint of sarcasm in his voice at all......weirdo. -- update - he is bummed, it has been canceled apparently.
  7. I don't mind cool (even cold) weather - and prefer it to hot weather.....but give me a 55-60 degree autumn day with some warm sunshine anyday over this crap. Vibes to M Chris' botanical family.
  8. on the radio this morning they said, "give yourself 2 hours to get to work today - it's a mess out there." I am so glad neither one of us works far from where we live.
  9. yeah - Graham is indeed a mailman. Though he isn't permanent yet.....so he doesn't have the wicked cool shorts or the safari hat. -- and to answer Kevin - he has been at the USPS for about 6-8 weeks now I think? I quit my job a few weeks ago to finish my MA in history (I am prepping for comp exams and will be finished by the end of summer) - and then I am going into another MA program at Loyola in the fall.
  10. Vibes for Graham who is delivering mail all day in this shit......it is a mess. It is blowing sideways right now, as I look out the window. I was covered in ice and snow just from being dropped off and walking from the car to the door of the coffee shop where I am spending my whole day studying. I am glad the Sox are in Oakland - we should get home to catch the game from the 6th inning on......
  11. I just searched for tickets in the Indians/Angels in Milwaukee.......hmmmm tempted.....tempted.......cheap......cheap.
  12. Graham is hoping they stay in Milwaukee until their next series against the Sox I have to admit it is tempting to go up and root for.....ummm.....enjoy the atmosphere. I guess I could just root against everyone - Travis Hafner!! I HATE YOU!
  13. "tell us about the time you struck out Ted Williams, again."
  14. I have yet to find a track that I actually do like.
  15. I hear the alarm clock, my husband does not.....and it's on my side of the bed - so when he has to get up and I don't - drag.
  16. kinda like the rich Young Republican kids at the prep school I went to always had the good coke and drank expensive beer - while the kids at the liberal arts high school I later went to had skunky pot and drank Old English 40 ounces
  17. I didn't think your sort was allowed to drink - or dance.
  18. huh? Miller Park has a dome?? (aha....I read here it has a retractable roof - I have never seen it closed - not that I keep tabs)
  19. yeah - I wouldn't have thought to check on something like that if I had tickets - I just happened to hear about it on the lunchtime news......and was bummed, because all week I was looking forward to the first Friday night game - starting back up our Friday night baseball and pizza ritual. A Twins fan on TV speculated it was because they used up all their middle relievers yesterday and were too scared to play......that man could be onto something.
  20. That stinks you went all the way down there. I think it's lame.....yes, they are playing in Milwaukee - what gives?? lame. lame. lame. Hopefully you will get a perfect day for the make-up game!
