  1. much better is the article from 2001 in the New Yorker that called YHF a masterpiece of the decade and Jeff Tweedy a genius of music for all time.

The critic who wrote this latest piece, Sasha Frere Jones, meanwhile, recently wrote an unbelievable puff piece on Mariah Carey which basically argued that she's better than the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin put together. He was creaming in his jeans...unless Sasha Frere Jones is a woman, in which case she was creaming in her jeans.

  2. Just like the others said - not that easy. Tell me Craig , were you in the same Geography class as our friend Channing?

Um. No. My geographic knowledge is quite extensive, actually. I'm well aware of the size of the UK, its proximity to the rest of Europe, and the ease with which British citizens travel abroad despite the various taxes and fees associated with flying on Ryanair and EasyJet. If you can manage a stag night in Vilnius why not a Wilco show in Barcelona?

All Americans aren't fat and stupid Bible-thumpers, just like all Brits aren't drunken hooligans with bad teeth. As for the football player's comments--yeah, I guess he spent most of his time in college in the weight room. Would be fun to stack him up against Wayne Rooney on The Weakest Link.

Seriously, sorry about the canceled shows. That truly sux. Wilco will be back soon I'm sure. They love touring in Europe. This past May my Welsh mate and I took the train to Germany to see them! Great places to see shows....

  3. Suggestion all my British friends:

Why not just go see them in Spain?

Can't you fly there for like 50p and get a nice hotel room and eat decent food for a change, all for less than a night out in ol' Blighty would cost you--what with the outrageous Tube fare and the overpriced pints and bangers and mash and what not?

True it ain't good for your carbon footprint karma, but we can ask Al Gore to excuse it this one time for Wilco's sake.

  4. Does anyone know if the Marina Towers were altered (position wise, obviously the picture was) at all when making the YHF cover? My friend and I were walking around that area talking about the possible vantage points for that picture. Has anyone tried to recreate that? I did a Google Image search and saw a few interesting takes...

yes it says in the appendix to the Wilco Book that they actually moved one of the towers over a few feet to the left.

  5. Not sure how reliable the newsletter is. I thought I'd subscribed to it, but wasn't given any news about the last european jaunt. Keep checking in with Wilcoworld is my advice.

Good point. I do check the site pretty regularly....

  6. I mean, they most of they have played in festival in most of their recent europe shows...it's planned or not a proper tour ?

    Ciao.

They recently played a tour of clubs in Britain and Germany mostly, but also stops in the Netherlands and Belgium. Great shows all. Subscribe to wilcoworld.net for their newsletter and you'll be kept up to date on the next European tour. They make it over here every year or so and they don't just play festivals.

  7. I think he died.

I heard "Mama Mia" in the Moon Township (PA) Giant Eagle grocery store on Saturday and briefly though of baab and his grieving widow.

    Nooooooooooooooooo!

  8. Five years? I keep waiting for my Wilco phase to end (not end...but at least not comprise 95% of what I listen to)... When I talk about them to my friends I do so as if it's some girlfriend that I'm so conscious about. Oh my...this could go on for forever.

Well, not constantly... I take a few days off every once in a while and listen to other stuff. Lots of other stuff.

And I go through phases in which I'll listen to different Wilco albums. Lately it's all been Sky Blue Sky of course because it's the first Wilco album my wife actually likes. She always kind of tolerated my Wilco fanship before but she is even more obsessed with SBS than I am...

Also now I'm listening to vinyl versions, the Being There and YHF lps are actually mixed differently, so there's some variety! :music

  9.

Great clip. Interesting debate in feedback section over whether that's Mikael or Jim O'Rourke on the synth. To me it isn't clear til the very end, when you can tell it's Jim.

  10. Weighty words. And beautiful words.

I love that snap-shots metaphor. It reminds me that moment when that girl

comes over and asks me, 'Are you the guy with the california-stars-request?

Yes you are, by the way, thanks for the request and here, take this! You deserve it..."

Then she gave me a backstage-pass...

    What a night.

Hey there, thanks for helping to make that show a memorable one. "Ve vill vait!!!!" became the slogan of our trip to Dresden...

    :worship

  11. Just curious, how long did they play? I'm going to Ghent tomorrow and want to know if I can count on catching my train back.

Better be careful, I once had to leave a great Lucinda Williams show during the encore to catch the last train back to Brussels. They should have a later train!

  12. Still waiting to get mine! MusicNextYear more like it. When they ship internationally they send it on a freaking rowboat, apparently. My last vinyl order from them, of YHF and AGIB, took a MONTH to arrive....

    :frusty

  13. I think anyone who frequents this board and has a "copy" of SBS, and does not go out and buy this album (providing they don't HATE it) this week....sucks.

I've had the copy for quite a while. I'm counting the days until my SBS LP+CD arrives and I see the band live three times in the space of a week!! Hamburg, Dresden and Gent!! :dancing

  14. That is a freaking great record. Radioactive reissues some amazing stuff.

    It is great.

Weird bit of trivia: the son of the guy who recorded that album is the American al Qaeda dude. The kid being tried for treason.
