  1. I've been reading the Garcia bio by Blair Jackson. Not much so far that I didn't already know from Phil's book or the Dennis McNally book. I saw that Melvin Seals and the JGB are coming through in March. Has anyone ever seen them? Are they worth checking out?

  2. And Randy Newman has the Little Criminals.

Aquarium Drunkards? There's already a good music website using this name, but maybe we could repurpose it. It would just be too sad to name ourselves The Lonely Ones.

Maybe we can challenge the band to anoint us with the name of their choice and announce it ar Solid Sound.

I do like the Lonely Ones. It has that touch of Irony that all Wilco fans can appreciate

    Tweedy-birds

    Lol!

    Hummingbirds

  3. I saw DSO last year on my birthday.  I knew they weren't the Dead, nor did I expect them to be.  In fact, I didn't have any expectations at all.  I came away from the evening having done a little dancing and had a great time.  I know it's hard to judge a band from audience recordings or fan made videos on youtube, but I was not intrigued enough to see Furthur.  I don't know, it seemed like they are missing something that I can't quite put my finger on.

  4. Wilco actually have a six degrees of kevin bacon connection to Pavement (more like one degree).  In the summer of 2002, one of the bands that opened for Wilco was Preston School of Industry.  PSOI was Scott Kannberg's (Spiral Stairs) band following the ending of Pavement.  They played a Pavement song during their set, although I can't remember which one.  That was one of the most fun opening acts I've seen in seeing Wilco.  usually I'm like, meh, but they worth watching.  I actually saw them at the Ram's Head the following winter.  PSOI only put out two albums, but they're worth checking out.  the guys from Wilco played on a couple of songs on PSOI's second album, Jeff, Leroy, John, Glenn playing all together on the song 'Get Your Crayons Out'.  PSOI played with Wilco on a cover of the Stooges' 'TV Eye', at Melkweg (Milky Way) on May 26, 2002.  I believe this is the only time Wilco has ever played this song.  I actually met Spiral Stairs at Bogart's in Cincinnati when PSOI opened for Wilco.  I had just gotten into Pavement at that time so I didn't know who he was at the time, but he knew the guys with whom I had gone to the show and they told me who he was.  I had no idea I would actually get to see Pavement about eight years later.  I was pleased as punch when Wilco played 'Cut Your Hair'.

  5. I've been listening to the second night of Solid Sound the last couple of days in the car.  I remember there was filming going on during the weekend.  I wonder if we'll see a final product sometime before the end of this year.  Even though it won't be the same thing as reliving the festival, it'll be as close as we can come.  It would be awesome to see a 2 disc set, one disc being a film of the festival and another disc being of the two wilco shows.

  6. I had to post about Dick's Picks 15: Englishtown, NJ 9/3/77.  I've had my mind blown this afternoon, and I haven't even finished listening to the show.  I'm certainly no expert when it comes to listening Dead shows, but at this point I've listened to a lot of shows.  I've read books on the Dead and am aware of Lavata's passion (understated I know) for getting people to listen to Dead shows.  It's the joy of hearing a moment or moments that you weren't expecting.  I'm also aware of the idea that the Dead played as one unit.  It's hard to necessarily judge from tapes alone about chemistry between bandmates.  I'm not quite sure about this idea about the band as one unit idea when listening to most shows, maybe I'm missing something. However, with Englishtown, there's no doubt that the band was playing as one unit during this show.  Everyone's locked in together, moving the rhythm along.  However, what actually is happening, as the line in 'The Music Never Stopped' goes, the music played the band.  In a rare instance, the band were the instruments through which the music played, not the other way around.  It is something I don't think I've ever heard in any other live performance on tape or in person.  And the performance, the tempo just moves and grooves.  I've always loved 'Bertha' because it is such a rockin' song.  I've heard lots of versions of 'Bertha', the Englishtown is one version up at the top of the list.  There's a moment in 'Estimated Prophet' where the sound opens up like a flower and spreads out.  If you closed your eyes, you could possibly visualize it happening.  Then 'Eyes Of The World', one of my other favorites, in most cases chugs along, leaving time to reflect upon the nuances of the sounds you're hearing or moving at a jazzy groove.  Not with the performance here!  This performance moves along like a galloping horse.  Blink and you just might miss it.  If the band didn't have it together during this performance, this song could have gone off the rails.  In most cases, at this pace, I'm not sure if I would have liked 'Eyes' performed in this manner.  It seems to me though that there is a performance of 'Eyes' at a similar pace, but I don't think it stood out to me much.  I understand this show and the Sunshine Daydream show are top rated performances by Dead fans.  I can certainly understand why this show would garner such praise; it deserves that honor.   Anyone concur?

  7. It's this show (the whole thing is awesome) and it's after a quick run through of "Ziggy Stardust." The Q&A starts around the 4:30 mark and is about five minutes long.

Fillmore West May 10, 1997. "If you were invited to a potluck dinner, what would you bring? Ketchup"

It was during this show's performance they launched into 'Dueling Banjos' in the middle of 'Casino Queen'.

  8. Did anyone else manage to make it to their local indie record shop?  I was hoping to pick up the Dylan Sidetracks collection on vinyl andI  the Dead live show.  Neither of those were available, but the guys at the shop took my name and number and said they would get in touch if they get anymore in stock.  Still I mainaged to pick up some other nifty titles:

Rolling Stones 'Got Live If You Want It' EP

Blind Boys of Alabama/Jason Isbell & Paul White split single

limited numbered single of Uncle Tupelo's 'I Wanna Be Your Dog/Commotion' single

Vince Guaraladi 'Linus & Lucy' single on gold vinyl

limited numbered vinyl with cd of Calexico's 'Spiritoso'.  The cd is fantastic by the way!

limited numbered vinyl of Harry Nilsson rarities lp drawn from the RCA box set collection.

and not part of Record Store day but still a nice surprise to find used-The Faces Five Guys Walk Into A Bar.  I hadn't seen this around for a while and by the time I got into the Faces, I couldn't find the box set anymore, only the greatest hits cd.  plus the price wasn't too bad, 35 bucks

  9. I was excited to see this announced. I've been off and on over the years about Pearl Jam, but I think I'm finally ready to see them again.  Last time was New Orleans during the Binaural tour.  They're playing Charlottesville, so there's no excuse to miss (that's if I can snag a ticket before they sell out in 5 seconds).

  10. the private show in Winnetka, one of the fans asks Tweedy to play a new Wilco song. He refuses. “They are all placeholder lyrics,” he tells the crowd, “like ‘Satan riding horses in the fog.’ ”

Everyone laughs. But another fan presses him further, saying he read an interview on an Australian music site in which Tweedy said the next album may be “more fucked-up sounding than the last few.”

“I said that? You know, people ask you questions all the time that you can’t answer. Like, ‘What’s the next record going to sound like?’ If I could say what the next record is going to sound like, there would be no point in making a next record.”

Satan Riding Horses In The Fog.  Hmm, sounds like a good title for the next Wilco record.  Either that, or Get Well, Everybody

Speaking of the next record, I would imagine it would be f'ed up, like full of holes with Courtney Love

But enough silliness.  I'm not quite sure why people are griping about people requesting Jeff play obscure requests.  If he does play something that I requested specifically, then it's a great experience.  If he doesn't play it, fine, being a part of an experience like the living room show, I would imagine, would be an awesome experience.  from people who have attended these living room shows personally, it sounds pretty damn cool.  I could never afford to attend those shows, but I'm happy for those who have had such an experience.  Plus, it's done for a good cause.  Really, folks are going to gripe about people helping kids in need, that's really sad.  If people put in that much money for these experiences, then that seems like the perfect opportunity to go out on a limb and request something crazy, like 'Let's Hear It For Rock & Roll'.  It probably wouldn't get played, but it would get a good laugh, or more likely an awkward stifiling attempt at a polite chuckle, and stir up some sort of interesting conversation.  I don't understand why people have to get down on other peoples' happiness.  Yes, music is awesome and it does connect folks, but it's also just music.  The real experience is the connection between folks over shared experience.  Some folks just need to get the stick out of their ass and find what makes them truly happy, besides griping and being snippy.  Sorry for being on a soapbox.  The snippiness I've read here just made me grumpy.

  11. The Jim James dilema.....I agree that MMJ haven't really kicked on how I imagined they would. 'Z' is an amazing album but they seem to have lost focus with the most recent two. 'Circuital' isn't a bad record but its not one I keep going back to. That said he is a major talent and watching him belt out 'Wordless Chorus' live is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. He has a solo record due this year. It could either be stunning or really bad.

When your songs aren't considered good enough to be mimed by Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem, it may not be good to put said songs on an album (Circuital). I get that their live act is pretty good, I'm still not entirely convinced.
