  1. Here's the explanation of the podcast from the Nerdist website, which you may have found:

    Nerdist Podcast

I am Chris Hardwick. I am on TV a lot and have a blog at nerdist.com. This podcast is basically just me talking about stuff and things with my two nerdy friends Jonah Ray and Matt Mira, and usually someone more famous than all of us. Occasionally we swear because that is fun. I hope you like it, but if you don't I'm sure you will not hesitate to unfurl your rage in the 'reviews' section because that's how the Internet works.

You can download episodes from iTunes if you're curious. They're taking the podcast on the road in March and April; I'm not sure if they'll have guests at those shows, or if the three of them will just talk about stuff.

If I remember correctly, Chris and some buddies released that hilarious song that was a spoof of the White Town song, 'Your Woman'-'Your Wookie' under the moniker Rodeohead. Chris also hosted that dating show on MTV in the '90s-was it called 'Singled Out' or something to that effect.

  2. Hmmm...a Wilco McCartney collaboration isn't all that unreasonable.

McCartney had a pretty nice collaboration with Elvis Costello a while back, and his Fireman project is a pretty good recent collaborative effort with Youth.

Why not Sir Paul and the boys?

Maybe a single could be recorded with Macca, for charity. I could see the band recording a version of 'the whole love' with Macca playing and singing with Jeff. That song definitely has a Paul vibe and feel to it. On the flip side, they could do a Paul song, backing Paul.

  3. I had to borrow my mom and dad's car yesterday and when I turned the car on, the radio was on 93.9 Lite FM - Chicago's All Christmas Music Station (at least during this time of year). Gotta love my mom......luckily (in this instance) my dad is pretty much deaf.

Every year before Christmas, Jim & Greg do their obscure Christmas songs episode on Sound Opinions. Always one of my favorite episodes of the year.

  4. Nope.

Seems way too early, especially since Halloween is fresh in your children's minds. I heard a Christmas jingle the day after Halloween. It made me feel like I was being rushed. Not to mention the fact that I saw Halloween costumes in stores on July 31st.

The real blame should be placed on Charlie Brown and the Peanuts for having a lackluster Thanksgiving Special sandwiched between an awesome Halloween and Christmas Special.

Aw come on it wasn't that bad other than Peppermint Patty imposing on Charlie Brown then getting mad when she didn't get her way. Besides, who doesn't enjoy having Thanksgiving dinner consisting of popcorn and jelly beans on a ping pong table?

But I do agree , it is still a bit too early to decorate just yet. I love Christmas and all, but...

  5. I think I have to stick my shoe in my mouth. Now that I read it again, I realize what you were actually saying. My apologies for having a thin skin, I had some irritations at work today that I just need to leave at work.

  6.

Rather than trying to teach yourself how to do this, I think it would be better to enlist Wilco fans who already know this who could build an admin back-end interface to existing database. Then you would not need any computer knowledge to get the db updated and maintain it going forward.

That makes sense. However, the people who had the capability to do it don't seem like they have the time to do it, which is understandable as we all strive to have some resemblance of something called a life. As far as I can tell, it hasn't been updated in two years. I actually had some time to devote to it at the moment in at least learning how all of it works. Since it was just sitting there and people want to see it stick around, i was willing to try to work on it. I thought I understood that no one wanted to take it on who was asked to take it on. Everything starts from an idea that someone had. Jane had the idea to start a page collecting the setlists and it became something valued. Rob had the idea to develop the database which people have enjoyed. I would have had other ideas for presenting setlists in an interesting way. I would like to see it keep going because it has been a valuable and entertaining tool to use and Rob put time and energy and devotion into it. It would be a shame to see that work just disappear. Just as things are archived on Via Chicago, Wilcobase could be archived. I would be interested in trying to continue building on it, but it's whatever others feel is best.

  7. Right now i have Good Vibrations running through my brain. I was actually more interested in the second disc than the first disc of the two-disc set; it appeals to my anal-retentive nature. I'm fairly certain if time and money was unlimited that I would enjoy the pet sounds sessions immensely.

  8. 1.Hell Is Chrome (hummingbird, the late greats)

2.I Might (Open Mind, Standing O)

3.One Wing (Bull Black Nova, You & I)

    4.Impossible Germany (What Light, Walken)

5.Airline To Heaven (Secret Of The Sea, Remember The Mountainbed)

6.Pot Kettle Black (Kamera, Poor Places)

7.What's The World Got In Store (Someone Else's Song, Say You Miss Me)

8.Candyfloss (alternate Shot In The Arm, Summerteeth)

9.Too Far Apart (Dash 7, Box Full of Letters)

10.Walt Whitman's Niece (Another Man's Done Gone, Way Over Yonder)

  9. If I can help you with anything, let me know.

I would at least hope Wilcobase will stay up as is - I am willing to pay for that.

I'd like to keep Wilcobase running as it is as well. It may take a little time, but I could start updating it again. I thought about checking out computer books at the library to help get me started on all of this. Any suggestions?

  10. It's actually a project as a compilation that started over 7 years ago! I would like to really see it through and this might be a good time to try it out. I have tried different ways to make the compilation work but have never found a approach that I've ever really liked that wasnt overwhelming. But the idea was to do an audio journal of all their tours and present unique or interesting versions of tracks. The compilation is called City Maps & Handclaps. So if I was able to work with what has already been contributed to the old site in terms of artwork and setlists to create this blog and work in conjunction with Owl & Bear on shows and developing a quality podcast, I think it could be really neat. My idea for the first entry would be to focus on the shows that made up the Ashes of American Flags film and present a podcast for an alternative soundtrack to the film. This shows were right after the Vic Residency shows, so on this show they were playing some stuff they hadn't played in years or never at all. Plus, they had the Total Pros in tow, which made for some great arrangements of songs. Many of these songs weren't even covered in the film. People who attended these shows could contribute their stories about those shows and I would work it into a narrative that would be part of the blog and part of the podcast.

  11. I wouldn't mind trying to rework the site, I had something along the lines of the Dead's taper's compendium, but for Wilco developed online. I'm not all that familiar with developing databases, but I have some time to learn and I could use a creative project at the moment. I'm actually thinking more along the lines of a blog rather than a database, with perhaps a podcast for each blog entry. I would definitely be open to writers for the blog.

  12. This was a good interview. It seems like Farrar was pretty open and relaxed. I did get to hear that Kerouac album he did with Gibbard and enjoyed it. I haven't ever really been a big fan of Son Volt or his solo stuff. Perhaps getting older has mellowed him out over time. However I still don't think well ever see an Uncle Tupelo reunion. I think Jeff & Jay could get along, but each guy is in different places in their lives. I also wonder if Heidorn would want to play with Farrar again after he was fired from Son Volt a few years ago.

  13. I'd rather have seen them do that than another greatest hits set.

Looks like they're mostly sticking to the singles for their Greatest Hits, compilation, which makes sense. But I'm still a bit surprised that "Bang and Blame" and "Daysleeper" didn't make the cut but non-singles "Alligator..." and "Sitting Still" made it. And do FOUR songs from Collapse Into Now belong on that thing, but only one song each from Monster and Up? Overall I'm pleased with the compilation and will buy it as soon as it's available. I'm a REM completist, and I've just gotta have those three new songs. Even if there were no new tunes I'd still buy the damn thing.

By the way, I came up with my own 40-song compilation a few days ago, and I was picking songs for what I thought would be a mix of singles, most recognizable songs, and just-too-damn-good-to-be-left-off-any-retrospective-compilation tracks. There's about 50% overlap. It's mind-boggling how many great songs these guys have written.

Add my name to the list of folks craving a REM rarities box set.

  14. Give Up The Ghost is my favorite from that album.

Watched the MTV2 airing. They would show one song and then cut to commercials for several minutes - they literally never showed two songs uncut together. I have the order written at home, but I'll try to remember what they showed:

    Little by Little

    Codex

    Separator

    Morning Mr Magpie

    Staircase

    Lotus Flower

    Give Up the Ghost

no Bloom, Feral, The Daily Mail

How can anyone not like a song like Give Up the Ghost? What is so weird about it in comparison to The Bends?

Watching Feral on YouTube right now. They seem to be having quite a bit of fun on that one.

  15.

I would have LOVED to have been there for this.

One day I will get to the Ryman.

I concur! I haven't seen them do this since the Norva in 2004. Did they include the drone?
