  1. I enjoyed it a lot more after I finally saw the movie - just added a lot of context for some reason and more of the songs hit home.

I seem to be alone in this but I don't really enjoy Tweedy's cover ... I was so excited to see that he was doing that song when the tracklist was released but I just don't like that he sings the whole thing in his upper vocal register and hits the "sat together in the park! / as the evening sky grew dark!" parts so hard. Again, just me though.

  2. Unfortunately I will be out of town this weekend, but if you want to eat at a great neighborhood joint in Old Town, send me a PM with the time you'd like to eat and how many will be in your party. I might be able to do something for ya...if you like ribs that is.

    Twin Anchors? If so, mmmmmm.

  3. I saw it at the Music Box when it was playing on the smaller of the two screens, which actually fit the movie quite well. The theater was empty enough as it was that the large room would have been more than a bit strange. I do remember it was a beautiful fall day and it was either a weekend or I had taken the day off of work and saw it with my roommate at the time. We walked home from the theater pretty enthralled with the movie, it was really a great day.

I love how the movie ends with "Pure Imagination".

They were also opening shows with that playing over the PA around that time ... I remember they came out to that at the Riviera show in late summer/fall of '02. That whole period of time is burned in my head in a very positive light - I completely understand someone being nostalgic for that time :)

  4. Milk and Honey is good and very busy on weekends. There are two. The one on Division is more of a sit down place with a bigger menu. The one on Damen near the Damen blue line stop is more like a place to grab a coffee and a muffin. The baked goods aren't exactly cheap (probably a bit more expensive than the stuff at the Starbucks across the street) but they are REALLY good!

The place on Division would be a great brunch spot, if you don't mind waiting for a table. They have good sandwiches. I wouldn't say it's cheap (sandwiches run $7 to $8.50 or so) but it won't break the bank. Since I work near there, I just have to resist going regularly for lunch.

While Milk and Honey does get pretty busy, they have a great system where you order at the counter right as you enter so when you get a table your food is basically ready right when you sit down.

  5. Listening to 8/13/93 right now, coincidentally ... just all around fantastic.

  6. bobfrombob, we we're planning a similar trip last spring (didn't end up happening however) and were looking at City Suites on Belmont Ave (I think) for a short stay. It's around the corner from The Vic. There were a few restaurants within walking distance as well if I remember right. Granted, I don't know a lot about Chicago, so I'm sure others will have more/much better advice, but thought I'd throw that out there. :)

If the rooms are within your price range, the City Suites would be absolutely ideal for a Vic-centered trip to Chicago.

  7. I typed in 8.7, and it still popped out 9.3

I was confused whether that was the fan average, or that was pitchfork's actual score. I am assuming 9.3 is pitchfork's actual score.....I think.

Then I typed in 1.1 to see if it would lower the average, but it stayed the same.

If you click the little question mark next to the text boxes (even without typing anything in), it changes to "IT'S UP TO YOU" with the question mark still there. If you click the question mark again, it changes to "NO REALLY - IT'S 9.3".

  8. Well, maybe I'm wrong, but I get the impression that most people buy HDTV to watch sports in high quality. Neither format helps them with that.

I thought the same thing ... then recently I tried to watch a regular DVD of Aranofsky's The Fountain on our new TV - it was absolutely unwatchable. I'm not talking about being a picky videophile type person, it was hard to watch. It was so noticeably blocky and off-colored that I only made it through five minutes. We switched to watching Half Nelson and it wasn't nearly as bad, but The Fountain is clearly one film that will benefit from a HD release.

Myself, I'm not guessing either way. I can wait until a clear winner emerges.
