  1. MMJ was indeed great - I guess it was inevitable but unfortunately the orchestra was pretty buried in the mix and their contributions were overshadowed by the (awesome) noise of the band itself. After seeing and hearing some clips of the band with the Boston Pops I was interested to hear if they had worked up new arrangements or even to hear those same arrangements live and in person, but for the most part it was a moot point ... Gideon may have been the exception.

A trip down memory lane is a great way to describe Pearl Jam, but in this case it felt like memory lane was the street I am living on right now - a great mix of a band I've been waiting 15 years to see playing many of their hits and a band that can still kick some serious ass on stage.

The Rapture really impressed me - I hadn't heard a lot of their music much less seen them live and they were probably the most pleasant surprise of the whole weekend for me. Especially coming from the M.I.A. show, which was probably the worst show I've seen in the past three years of this version of Lollapalooza ... ugh.

The Black Keys absolutely killed it during their set. They were just awesome and had a perfect time slot as the sun set on that absolutely perfect Friday.

Daft Punk blew a hole right through the back of my head. Quite simply put, bouncing around with all of those 10s of thousands of people in the middle of Grant Park on a perfect evening to the robot rock is a memory that I really hope doesn't leave me soon. Highlight x 10.

  2. Why are the lawn seats specified as "for listening only"? I know you wouldn't have a great view of the stage from the lawn (or any view at all past the front fifth or so), but is there going to be a barrier of some sort between the seats and the stage?

  3. The show in chicago last night was absolutely amazing. the best vocal performance ever. ryan's voice was so strong full of emotion

So true - he was in such good voice last night, it was really amazing. The venue was beyond awesome ... it was just perfect for a full band acoustic show like that. Everything sounded like on the fly, studio quality tracks. I felt very lucky to be there.

  4. I would definitely see the Black Angels, but I've also seen them at the Empty Bottle about 5 times in the last year. Yo La Tengo and !!! are not only playing opposite each other, but that's right when the main stage will start to turn into clusterfruck town in advance of Pearl Jam closing the weekend. Since I've yet to see MMJ (save for a few songs at Lolla last year) and I really want to see Pearl Jam, my priority is getting a good spot at that stage.

In short, no there isn't much else on Sunday I'm too eager to see.

  5. I just spent a few minutes searching for a thread that I swear I saw recently where someone mentioned this album, basically wondering what it was. It looks like it's a collection of reggae tunes from the Trojan Records vaults, chosen by Johnny Greenwood (yes, that Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead fame and fortune). You can find some more info here:

    http://trojan.sanctuaryrecords.com/

Also, Pitchfork has a review up and here is the tracklist:

    1. Dread Are the Controller - Linval Thompson

    2. Let Me Down Easy - Derrick Harriott

    3. I'm Still in Love [12" Mix] - Marcia Aitken

    4. Never Be Ungrateful [12" Mix] - Gregory Isaacs

    5. Bionic Rats - Lee "Scratch" Perry

    6. Cool Rasta - The Heptones

    7. Flash Gordon Meets Luke Skywalker - Scientist & Jammy & The Roots Radics

    8. Black Panta - Lee "Scratch" Perry

    9. Fever - Junior Byles

    10. Beautiful and Dangerous - Desmond Dekker, Desmond Dekker

    11. Dread Dub - Lloyd's All Stars

    12. Gypsy Man - Marcia Griffiths

    13. Ruffer Version - Johnny Clarke, Johnny Clarke

    14. Right Road to Dubland (Right Road to Zion Dub) - Jahlights

    15. Dreader Locks - Junior Byles, Lee "Scratch" Perry

    16. This Life Makes Me Wonder - Delroy Wilson

    17. Clean Race - Scotty

From what I've listened too so far it's a solid, if slightly downtempo, set of reggae - good stuff!

  6. Ellen had some good jokes ... "Without blacks or Jews there wouldn't be any Oscars ... or people named Oscar" (paraphrasing).

I loved the way they introduced the awards for the Screenplay and (especially) Editing categories - showing a short example of how a clip was edited was genius.

  7. 2-3 years ago they were playing art galleries. this has got to rank as one of the biggest jumps in popularity(in the music world)

They went from the Empty Bottle here in Chicago (tiny) to a HUUUUUGE show at Lollapalooza in 2005, followed by a show at Riviera later that fall (which holds around 2300). The Chicago Theatre tops out around 3500 so it's a logical progression from the Riviera, but three nights makes it a large jump. Since it's really the only midwestern show (except for maybe Toronto) and it's a weekend, it seems about right. At least they had the good sense not to play the Aragon.

  8. AliveAcoustic is a wonderful album and showcases their songwriting side - the companion disc, AliveElectric, shows off the improvisational jazz-ish side that they were initially known for ... both of these are live CDs.

Eisenhower is a pretty radical departure for them, but it came off really well. Children of December is just a flat out awesome tune. Their earlier studio album "Does" is also really good. They going to be touring by themselves throughout March - I definitely recommend catching them if you get a chance.

  9. you were right by my house! i live in the arboretum; the wildwood trail is in my backyard

You're lucky - that's one hell of a city park! The wildwood trail is the one we followed, it was beautiful on such a nice day.

Cannon Beach ... equally as beautiful:

  10. I was just out in Portland this past weekend - I was lucky enough to get three beautiful clear days in a row, and spent a day skiing at Timberline on Mt. Hood, a day driving to Cannon Beach on the coast and then a day hiking in Forest Park right near the city. At night we tried a few restaurants and went to the Rouge Brewery bar that they have in the city. Overall I was really impressed - the city itself was really cool and I was impressed with the rather expansive light rail system, especially since you could take it to the airport.

I was also "lucky" enough to fly out on Tuesday and witness the absolute clusterf*ck that was the Tuesday snowstorm - they only had 1 inch by 7am and canceled school and my friends got to call in to work! Pretty funny, although there were a lot of banged up cars by the end of the day.
