Seeing this show in Boston on Friday (after a trip to Brooklyn for Bowlive). Be sure to let us know how it goes. I saw a recent setlist, 35 songs. Don't know anything about Blitzen Trapper, deciding whether to skip, so any input would be welcome. Can't wait.
Saw the show @ Toad's Place (New Haven, CT) last night. I had seen Blitzen Trapper before (in support of Furr). They're a much tighter band these days. I liked them before, but they were excellent last night. I would strongly recommend you check them out.
The Truckers sounded great, too. It was the first time in about 10 shows where I could hear every word clearly. Their lyrics (which are a big reason why I enjoy their music) are typically incredibly difficult to comprehend at "The Rock Show." While I do prefer Neff and what he contributes accentually to their sound, this latest incarnation of the band sounds great. I'm also digging English Oceans more & more ("Pauline Hawkins" smokes live!). I'd put it just behind the 'Big 3' (Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, The Dirty South).

Beer & wine are both alcoholic drinks & you are correct in that they are two completely different things. Much like Drive-By Truckers & St. Vincent.
Good to see you are still wearing that contrarian hat with pride, bleed. Looks good on ya.

I've listened to it a few times. It's good, but I'm not buying a lot of the rapturous praise for it. I think with many aging bands, a lot of fans and/or critics will hail any decent album as a "return to form," whether it deserves it or not. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think a lot of fans delude themselves; wanting it to be better than it is (see Wilco).
I'll give it a few more listens, but St. Vincent's new one is much more exciting and interesting.
Rapturous praise? A quick look at Metacritic's aggregate score for EO appears to place it in line with much of the band's 2nd tier output.

This band had undergone so many different line-up changes that I don't understand what a "return to form" means. Maybe it means making another SRO, DD or TDS. Considering it is a different band, both in composition and age, I don't see that happening. Nor do I see that as a realistic expectation for DBT (or Wilco or any "aging band.")
I haven't heard St. Vincent's latest record, but comparing a Drive-By Truckers record to a St. Vincent's album is akin to jumping into a discussion about India Pale Ales, saying a particular IPA isn't as good as the hype, and then saying you find pinot noirs more exciting anyway.

With the penchant for bands to NEVER say anything bad about past or current band members and to gloss over problems, thing must have gotten pretty bad.
Shonna apparently almost Yoko'ed the band.
Good read...

That's nice article. So is this one from Grantland's Steven Hyden.

English Oceans is now streaming.

I'm really diggin' this one.

In light of the discussion regarding songwriting, here is a recent, semi-relevant article I came across:
-
The National is a shitty live band.
At least this is in the proper thread.
-
So there seems to be some agreement that Big Star has two decent albums.
LouieB
Yup. Seems to be. Except for those that would include Third.
-
Now I like them very much, aside from Third, which I still feel is a terrible, depressing mess.
Yup. I get the context, but I find that record borderline unlistenable.
-
I may have already posted it on here before, but Big Star is a seriously overrated band. I mean, don't get me wrong, they were decent, but the way indie music fans talk about them, you'd think they should have been as big as Pink Floyd or The Beatles or something.
Perhaps, but those first two records are fucking incredible. I come at things from outside the "Indie World," so they don't get enough props in my universe.

Heard an amazing song from this album called "Gustavo" that's really making me want to dig into this one. Anybody heard this record? Always liked Sun Kil Moon.
I like Sun Kil Moon a lot. I've tried to embrace this album, but it hasn't gained any traction with me. Have you heard Mark Kozelek & Desertshore? It might be my favorite release this year.

(pro tip - move your lips while reading it this time)
I still don't see it. I know Tinnitus a little. I've even shared a beer with him on more than one occasion. He is a sarcastic bastard, but he is certainly not mean-spirited. I guess I'll file that comment under what Doug C is referring to as "banter."
-
Tinnitus did bash you over the head with an imaginary wooden mallet, but I can't seem to find the part where he personally insulted you.

Very, very excited for the re-release of both records. Will be nice to own the self-titled record legitimately. Looking forward to seeing them live in January.
-
So far, my favorite 2013 album. Add "Seal Rock Hotel" to the previously mentioned songs I really like. "Sometimes I Can't Stop," too.
-
dig this album a lot, but i could do with a bit less flute...
I was thinking the same thing today, but I kinda think the flute is essential. That said, I still have hard time embracing it.

They were very good. I was about 16 "rows" deep between Erik and the Napolean Dynamite-looking multi-intrumentalist.
