  1. that being said..the production on this album is just fine.

Everyone keeps talking about good and bad production, but that's a very subjective concept. You have a lot of guys like M. Ward who fear the big fancy sterile studios and pass them up for small operations. He's even gone as far as recording in his friend's attic.

There is such a thing as over-production, and in a way, it seems WTA has lost something from that.

  2. One one real downer IMHO is You and I, which I could have done without. If I didn't know better, I'd say that song is angling for air play -- Wilco's "The One I Love." If nothing else, it serves as a palette cleaner, after the stellar Bull Black Nova

This track def. left a sickly sweet taste in my mouth... I think this is their poppy track to get onto the iPod commercials.

  3. I've admittedly only listened through once, but my first impression is that some of the songwriting is a little elementary and week. Almost sounds like something a high schooler would scribble in their room in the night. I still need to listen to this on the road, though. Always helps to cruise the countryside to ease in to a new record.

  4. Wow this is some great news to brighten up a shitty monday. Love CO's music. Here's a show they did a while back for KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic that is worth checking out for anyone who wants a preview of sorts:

EDIT: Oh shit, I read the dates too fast and didn't see July. I'm going to the Cinci show in June. Oh well, hopefully they'll get someone decent to open. MMJ would work for me. ;)

  5. It always bugs me when at some point in that recording of that song (second to last verse I think?) the audio changes to a really tinny sound, and then back. You guys ever notice that?

I know what you mean. Someone once told me his main mic went out, and the remainder of the song was recorded through his guitar mic. I haven't actually confirmed that, though.

  6. :lol

I just now got this, but only because I'm listening to the "Royal Albert Hall" concert.

Ah, an excellent recording. Very spooky and ambient. I bet you could hear a pin drop at those old Dylan Acoustic sets. Not like Jeff's rowdy crowds! ;)

  7. Hey Wilco, if you guys are reading, now would be a great time to stream the album. You know, to take the attention off of other matters and while people are going to your web site because they're reading about you in the news... hint, hint.

  8. For whatever it's worth, $50,000 is the jurisdictional minimum for the Cook County Law Division. That's why Bennett's complaint included language claiming damages "in excess of" $50,000. If he did not specifically plead this amount, he would risk having the case removed to the Municipal Division where, among other things, the case may be subject to limitations on damages and mandatory arbitration. The damages claim does not restrict the amount of money Bennett can seek at trial, it's merely a formality to keep the case in the Law Division.

I know Jay shaped Wilco, etc, but this whole thing still smacks of gold digging. The main work in question came out almost seven years ago... suddenly Jay has expenses and this is a big issue.
