  1. All three of the LA shows are awesome. I really love the laid back vibe and arrangements. Do you think the more mellow approach was designed to more easily incorporate the new Schmilco tunes? Or am I imagining it. Also do you think we'll get the Filmore shows on roadcase?

  2. Weakest track on SW is Magnetized, IMO. People posted about it like it's in the same league as Reservations or In a Future Age, which to me is just inexplicable.

Wow. I like that song. Sounds so Beatlesque to my ears.
  3. I guess the thing that is supposed to tie SW together is that it's a more fun and lighthearted but I dunno, I like my Wilco to make some more profound statements than just that. I like fun Wilco but SW was a bit too much meaningless nonsense across the board for me.

And a couple of weak tracks on what was already a short album dragged the whole thing down quite a bit for me as well. Schmilco on the other hand doesn't make me reach for the skip button maybe because even the weaker ones make me stay in a certain vibe so it's all good.

Just curious. What are the weak tracks on SW in your opinion? I know it's different for everyone.
  4. Digging the vibe on Schmilco a lot more than on SW, which was a fun album but ultimately a bit of an empty and too straightforward rock show (with a couple of slower ones that weren't that good, Tweedy seems to have kept the better slower tracks for Schmilco) that didn't keep me coming back except for a couple of stand outs. Never understood why that one got so much love on this board.

I like that Schmilco goes for the good old album as a cohesive statement vibe which is the first time since SBS I think (though I'd still rank it below TWL which was a bit better than Shmilco on a song by song basis)?

I thought Star Wars held together well as a whole album and was more cohesive than the previous three. I feel the same way about Schmilco. There's not one song on either of those albums that breaks the spell for me.
  5. Yeah I definitely get a Big Star vibe off of that song.

Also the bass line on that and on Locator both remind me of Can't Stand It.

The bass line reminds me of Stuck in the Middle With You. A rubber band sort of groove. It's my favorite song on the album right now.
  6. Am I the only one who thinks the chorus of Someone to Lose has a major Big Star vibe? When the guitar kicks in it reminds me of In the Street. The whole first side of this album is perfect. Not to say the second side isn't great as well. It just hasn't been as immediate as the first side.

  7. I've been hoping for another negative space-heavy Wilco album for quite some time and it looks like I got my wish with this one. There have been great songs on the last couple of records but I think what's been lacking a bit for me is that cohesive atmosphere for the songs to sit in. I like my Wilco weird, melancholy, and biting. Power pop mode is always a fun face for them to put on, and they're damn good at it, but I'm less likely to chew on those songs the way I would some of their more left of center stuff. A couple of listens in and I can echo others who've said its a really strong set of lyrics.

Favorite Tracks (so far): Common Sense, Locator, Quarters, We Aren't The World (Safety Girl), Just Say Goodbye

Wood grain, Radio Cure, Red Eyed Blue. I like my Wilco weird also. I love love love this album
  8. SF show is a big miss in the roadcase series, sounds like an average aud.rec.on edirol.

That's disappointing. I bought both because I've been so excited about the new album but I haven't listened to the acoustic one yet. The mix on the KEXP show was sooo good that I jumped on the first acoustic roadcase because I wanted the same sound with more songs and lossless audio.
  9. The sound quality of both of the new releases is kinda lacking, to much audience mix, there is a screamer in the Seattle show that makes it almost un-listenable. The San Francisco show is lacking mostly because of the way they amplify the acoustic shows, I just can't figure out why they want it to sound like that, it's just not enjoyable to not hear what's on stage, you can close mic the instruments (and vocals god damnit!) and still create the openness and space they are trying to create.

I agree about the screamer. It sounded like there were maybe twenty people in the audience and they were all obnoxious. I've never bought a roadcase where the audience gets on my nerves. It almost felt like I was there and getting pissed off at people.
  10. Well yeah. I wouldn't expect a searing expose! Kim Kardashian he's not. I meant more like a peek inside the creative mind. Yes, there would probably be about 100 people who would find this endlessly fascinating--and I'm one of them.

Don't get me wrong. I'm one as well.
  11. I'm hoping Jeff's saving up the inside dope on the title for his memoir. (Wouldn't a memoir be a dream come true??)

For super fans maybe. It would probably be pretty tame to the general public. Jeff seems to level headed to create the kind of drama that would attract the masses.
  12. Bought the CD today at Bull Moose music, using the $1 off coupon sent out by Wilco HQ. Brought the price down to $8.97 plus tax.

It sounds great cranked up really loud in the minivan. Yeah, I said it. Minivan. A cat-like 2008 Nissan Quest that blasts Wilco regularly.

I also blast Wilco regularly in my minivan. Loud and proud.
