  1. I totally agree with everything you wrote here. I have a Gretsch Electromatic from that same timeframe, and it sounds fantastic, AND I had to swap out the jack. $500 for guitar + $20 for the jack, but I think that thing sounds like gold. Actually here's me playing it on these demos:

My band, it's just me and a drummer and harmonica. Gretsch on both the electric tracks.

has anyone been to korea (by korea i mean sth)? It is not a third world country and has some of the highest manufacturing standards anywhere in the world. taiwan is also pretty first rate. however the mainland, is pretty random. i used to work in the bicycle industry and the factories there are hideous. lack of safety and suitable training are the norm and the pursuit of a profit over ethics is standard. whether fender or gibson or whomever in the guitar world are uber stringent i dont know...

  2. I was at a hipster bar here in Louisville over the weekend and one of the bands playing that night were warming up with "Love theme from Kiss." Myself and one other guy recognized what it was. We were very excited, but our friends thought we were crazy.

    Cold Gin please...

  3. Sansone is the clear winner here. Nels is such a great guitarist, but his weakness has always been noodling under pressure, haha. Pats totally in control, doesn't even look like he's trying, and completely owns Nels because of it.

But we could have sort of figured that. Now, Tweedy vs. Sansone? THAT'S a fair fight :)

pat seems far more natural. nels is a genius but i just get the feeling he has really had to work at it whereas pat always seems more in control

ao i pat owns nels and pat v jeff is a fair fight, does that mean you think jeff nels?

  4. Can you link us to the photos...most articles ive found document it as a National...again, Im sure its a dynamic

Its most certainly a National... Nels talks about it quite a bit in a few articles. A link to a story when he was one the road with the Singers

To me though, it does look like the fret board of a New Yorker but the body of a Dynamic... :) I havent seen a Dynamic with a plain fret board before...

  5. Hi there... so around 215 in the vid below sounds vibraphone type sounds kick in... i assume its the Nord? I am pretty keen on getting a MicroKorg... can they do something similar? They can approximate the blips and blops and squelches... how about the vibes?

  6. Gibsons are great recording guitars (as are Martins). Have a 60s Hummingbird, J160E and a J35... currently debating the purchase of a 50s LG1... If you can find one for the right price go for it. But yes, play the bugger first!! :)

  7. My guess is that it's an old Club and Country, like the one SRV used to play. I think that and the SF Twin he has are used for keyboards and the Matchless is his guitar amp.

    Could be wrong...

hmm, dont think so as those had controls on the front panel of the combo. so its not the silver jub either. perhaps an older jmp combo?

  8. i play with two other guitarists (rhythm), a pedal steel and banjo. any frequency nerds here that could give an evaluation of the ranges these instruments typcially sit in? and from that, any recommendations for a range i could use an eq pedal to get into this range?

  9. Dunno... I am really enjoying it as an album... BUT... I am just not sure it is gelling with me as a Wilco album... you have such amazing musicians .... Kotche and Nels et al... but they just dont seem to be 'there'... a floursih here, a signature drum roll there... but...the album just sounds like a Tweedy solo expedition... dunno. Its a great album... but ... dunno. :stunned

  10. You can see what looks like a bit of the original finish peeking out near the bridge on the treble side. Perhaps sunburst? It looks like alder with a mahogany stain. Kind of Elvis Costello like. Dig the weird bridge too. I've never seen a mustang one like that.

Bridge is a Mastery Bridge the latest greatest bridge all the kool kidz are using... Nels, Jeff, Sonic Youth etc etc.

  11. ok first up i am not american so pls beare with me... what i dont understand is why u2 and other non-us bands play at such a thing like the inauguration of a us president? i get the whole international goodwill thing but really... why?
