  1. Some of the guys from Coffee Creek (with one notable exception) and some other St. Louis musicians have an outlaw country cover act called Diesel Island. They tend to do really small shows without a lot of publicity. There's one coming up a week from Sunday. I'll be there, and with any luck I won't have to touch anyone hard. :dancing

I'm just young enough to have missed the Coffee Creek days. I started college at MU in 1991, and quickly became a UT fan since they played a lot of shows in Columbia. It's funny that nearly 20 years later, I wound up living on Main Street in Belleville. :stunned A lot of people who were a part of that music scene have kids who go to school with my daughter. I've heard some of the damnedest stories about those days at PTO meetings.

  2. Brian's always more than willing to share his fantastic stories. I talked to him at Record Store Day last year and told him it was my daughter's first "show". She was four at the time. He launched into talking about his first shows. He's just about as congenial as they get.

He actually sang lead vocals on

. I think it's a shame that so many people think UT = Jeff and Jay, when Brian played a big part in the band, especially live. Nevermind that he was the lead guitarist on A.M. while he was recording The Brooklyn Side with the Bottle Rockets. He deserves a lot more credit than he gets.
  3. I heard there was a woman at the show beating people up. Did you get that on film?

I'll reiterate: I did not hit her. I just touched her harder than I should have. :shifty

Lou, I was so excited to see you and Rosie on Saturday. I love the BRox, but I think I was just as excited to see Rosie on stage with her camera as I was to see the band.

Fantastic show, as always. I've never encountered a band that's so in tune with their fans as the Bottle Rockets. Aside from a handful of assclowns in my vicinity, BRox shows bring out some amazing fans. There's such a strong community vibe at their shows, and I can't wait to see how that plays on the DVD.

  4. I'm selling two tickets for the Blooming, Indiana, Wilco show on Thursday, April 16th. Orch-E1, row 30, seats 403 and 404. Face value for both tickets is $60. I'll cover priority shipping.

Tickets are marked "IUB Student ID Required". Not sure how serious they are about that, but it's something to keep in mind.

Email me at robindawn@gmail.com if you want 'em.

  5. Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1996. I came down with food poisoning an hour before time to leave for the show. I gave the ticket to my neighbor. Can't say I was too disappointed.

Technically I had a ticket to see the Stones in 1997, but I'm pretty sure I would have had to put out in exchange for the ticket. Not worth it. :yucky In 1968, maybe.

Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds in 2005. It was at a shitty outdoor venue in Kansas City. It rained, and the venue was two or three hours late opening the gates. Total chaos. We decided it would be more fun and less annoying to go play elsewhere.

  6. Why do you come to VC regularly?

Partially out of habit. Mostly for the kicks and hijinx. It's a good source of music news, too. But the hijinx ... that's the biggie.

What do you get out of coming here?

    Entertainment

How did you get into VC?

After a show in 2007 I was looking for a download of the show. I think I first heard of VC from an article in Paste a few years earlier, and I'd occasionally checked in for album and tour news. After that '07 show, I got sucked into the discussion about the show and haven't left the vortex since.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

Oh yeah. Fan from the beginning.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

I don't like to define other people. Fandom's self-defining. Or something.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

I'm on a wee little bored with some friends, and I check out the Bottle Rockets board quite a bit.

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Yep. I met some of my dearest friends from VC.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

    A few.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

Primarily the music stuff, but I also like the blend of personalities, people, and topics.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

I've been a fan of internet communities for a long time. I'm really social and outgoing. Being a stay at home mom and freelance writer, it can be difficult to get as much grown-up interaction as I'd like. Internet communities are a good outlet for pent-up extrovert energy.

  7. I get to see them this Sunday, opening for Andrew Bird! :dancing I haven't listened to the new album yet, but will probably buy it at the show.

Four years ago, I saw them opening for either Kings of Leon or Drive-By Truckers at a fairly small club. They were excellent.

  8. Any excuse to drag out these videos.

Clara Jane, age 2, pontificating on "Candy Floss":

Clara Jane, age 4, singing "Heavy Metal Drummer":

At age five, she'll listen to just about anything by Wilco. Of course, she prefers the upbeat stuff. "I'm the Man Who Loves You", "Hoodoo Voodoo", "Just a Kid" are favorites. And "Candy Floss" and "Heavy Metal Drummer", of course.

  9. Vigilance, shopping, stay the course, more shopping and then a little bit more of the vigilance, but not so much that it gets in the way of shopping.

    You forgot "shopping for monkeys".

I saw some blurb on cnn about the monkey being given tea and Xanax. It was a video, so I didn't watch it. I'm opposed to watching videos on cnn's website. But I'd really like to know how this tea and Xanax combo could prompt a chimp to attack. It sounds like my regular evening routine that prevents me from biting people's faces off.

  10. I was all pissed off about the Travis incident last night, and how awful it is for people to keep wild animals as pets. And yet now? I'm laughing. Hard. In public.

It's a damn shame Travis attacked a visitor instead of the dumbass who thought having a monkey for a pet was a smart move. Travis was probably sick to death of having to wear underpants. I know I would be.

  11. I've been meaning to get the Belleville one. The only reason I haven't - and this is so silly - is because it's 1814-1914. My house was built in 1928, as was most of my immediate neighborhood. That discount might change things, though.

I don't even know where to begin on the St. Louis books. So many I'd love to have!

Cool! I just checked and there's one about Sedalia, Missouri, where I grew up. I definitely need that one. I'm familiar with the author; I remember her coming to my classes when I was a kid to talk about local history.

  12. You are highly entertained by people from outside tornado alley when there is a tornado watch.

My husband moved from northern Michigan to Missouri in 1992 and he still panics at thunder storm and tornado watches. He never can remember that a watch is nothing. It also freaks him out that I can "see" and "smell" a tornado long before we have one.

Then again, he thinks it's funny when we all lose our minds and buy hoards of bread and milk at the first mention of snow flurries.

I do take shelter when the sirens blow, though. My hometown was decimated by tornadoes twice before I was ten years old. I think I was young enough to have the fear put into me. On that same token, I can be prepared to take to the basement in 29.4 seconds flat. That includes the two dogs, cat, kid, and the Yooper who still doesn't know exactly what the sirens mean.

  13. yes, that is why i brought back the thread. read the last page.

Nah. I'm not that interested in the topic, aside from making what appears to be a paltry attempt to share some information. But thanks for the suggestion.
