When we play at home, we use some cheap, 99 cent, ten year-old dictionaries as our go-tos for challenges. I've had the Official Scrabble dictionary on my Christmas and Birthday lists for years now. I always liked Scrabble but my interest picked up when I learned about the pro circuit. Those people are interesting, such dedicated players and a little wacky too.

My MIL could be a pro Scrabble player. She's frightening, and not much fun to play. Not so much because of the ass-kickings, but because she's a terrible winner. She gets a hearty laugh anytime an opponent has to exchange tiles. The urge to wallop her with an unabridged Oxford is strong at times.

I've used both QI and ZA on regular occasions. At least once, I've played a Q on two I's at the same time.

I don't use a word list; I just randomly throw tiles on the board and see what gets accepted. That's probably what accounts for my amazing Scrabulous record.

I want that job. It looks soooooo fun.

It doesn't pay well, but it sure looks like fun from the audience.

If nothing else, playing against the computer, while often humiliating, is a good way to learn those fake words like QI and ZA.

The computer cheats. I refuse to acknowledge his cheating ass.

This Saturday, in honor and memory of Natalie, Robin (poppymom) and I are going to be driving to Ste. Genevieve, MO. We are going to the Mississippi River at dusk, and will hold a small memorial service for Natalie there. We are going to make sculptures to set free onto the river along with some flowers and maybe some floating candles. If anyone would like to send sculptures (or anything else you'd like floated off in the river, notes, etc) to be a part of our little memorial, PM Robin for her address.

I can't knit, but I can make beads! I sent Nat a pair of bumblebee earrings last year.

Aw! I'll bet they're beautiful! Your bead skills are amazing.

(Aman can vouch for my complete lack of knitting skillz ... I made him a scarf our first Christmas that looked more like an afghan.)

That's a beautiful idea! I should really learn to knit.

You could use this as an excuse. Since Nat was an animal lover, you can get some cheap acrylic yarn, make some simple squares (they usually need 12" x 12"), and donate them to an animal shelter. They use them as padding/bedding for cages. It's a great way to learn to cast on, knit, and bind off, which is really all you need to know in knitting.

I had a thought ... since Nat was crafty and a midwife, what if we all did a craft to donate in her name? It could be a quilt/blanket for Project Linus, or baby/kid hats for our local crisis nursery. Or anything.

I haven't been around here very long, but Nat was one of the people I quickly started getting to know. I'd noticed that she hadn't posted anything on the knitting board we were both on, and had thought that was odd.

Much love to her family, friends, and critters. And to everyone here who's hurting so deeply.

poppy the head wrap looks terrific! i've been looking for yarn in my cupboard that fits the gauge.

I did it in plain ol' worsted weight on size eight needles. It's pretty big, but that's what I was aiming for as I have a watermelon-sized noggin and gigantic hair.

I've been sick for the past few days, and it's been a good excuse to plow through some knitting. Today I started the Fetching gloves a friend asked me to make.

I made a Calorimetry headband in just a few hours. Love this pattern! If I have enough yarn left over from the gloves, I'm going to make this to my friend, too. Here's mine:

I love how the purple spot in the center is the same shade as the purple in my hair.

I'm almost finished with this bag. Mine's black with hot pink squares. I'm hoping to finish it this weekend.

There's been some sock work in there, too.

I had to wait for a prescription yesterday, and the pharmacy happened to be next to Hobby Lobby. I decided to kill some time there, and hit the jackpot on fabric for my curtains. I got a lovely decorator fabric with a poppy print, clearanced to $2/yard! They only had three yards, so I doubt if I'll have enough to make curtains for my living room, but for that price and that design, I'll make it work somewhere in this house.

I've been meaning to buy this since it was released two years ago. Guess I should get on that.

I've burned out on many a great album. This is one of the things I really love about going digital; it I catch myself overdoing it on an artist, I put the iPod on shuffle for a day or two until something I haven't heard in a long time catches my fancy. Then I'll revisit that album.

In the past when I've burned out on albums, it's usually because I get stuck and can't seem to branch out beyond the familiar. That's just me and my short attention span, though.

Thanks for the recommendtions, Yvon. I think I'm going to ditch the pattern and just go for simple. We've got 9' ceilings throughout the house, and I'm mainly looking to add some visual interest to all that space with curtains. The windows all have great coverings already (bamboo shades in the living room, vintage blinds and shutters in the master bedroom), so I don't have to worry myself with light-blocking fabrics and such. I can sew hems and a case for the rods, surely!

At my old house, we had awnings on the outside of all the windows, so I did these snazzy no-sew cafe curtains. I put big brass grommets in the top for the rod, and pinking sheared the edges. They were so cute, but really wouldn't match the style of the new house. I loved them, though.

I'm wishing I'd made my chickpea and cauliflower curry for dinner tonight. The leftovers would be wonderful right now.

I just read the recipe. Considering that it's just a pinch of asafetida, I wouldn't worry about it at all. And since it's a crockpot recipe, there's no real need to saute the onions and garlic. Just throw a little into the pot.

I'm in a foul sewing-related mood. I don't ask for help very often, but I'd asked one of my sewing friends to help me fabric-shop for my curtains and I'd asked my husband the engineer to measure the windows and help me figure out how much fabric I might need. They both flaked on me.

Screw it. I'm saving myself the time and frustration by going to Target tomorrow and buying some sweatshop-manufactured curtains.
