  1. Wilco SBD from 9/4/98:

"Me and MikeyD went down to this show in Rockford to see wilco and they were great!! Funny story, We're hanging around the soundboard waiting for the soundguy (Adam) to ask for a patch, and when comes over, he says " Sorry , the guys are playin some new stuff tonight and didnt want board patches.. No prob, he had our stealth stuff too. Then he says... "But if you got some green bud, I can hook you up..." So then we were on the board... Adam had a ?Fostex? deck already on the board so we used that and the coax output to the other Dat, 2 board masters, and ran the small mics as well. Good times.. This board tape smokes, perfect all around. Great Kingpin as well.... Check it out and never sell or bastardize this recording ...

  2. i'm not a taper but i try and collect shows i either attended or that are just downright kickass (sorry, it's early i've no suitable adjectives).

.flac/.shn/lossless audio... while it may seem like a more advanced concept to grasp, it's really quite easy.

it's no different than DL'ing any other audio (just takes longer because the file sizes are enormous).

don't let that be a deterrent. depending on how many people are seeding, it sometimes takes an entire day to DL one show... be patient, once you're on the lossless wagon you'll never fall off and it's well worth it.

fwiw, i don't have tons of gigspace on my hard drive, either; which is why after DL'ing a torrent, it's converted to .wav and saved on a CDR [i also save an alternate CDR with .flac format as well but that's just me].

i have maybe 10gigs free right now if i'm lucky.

file conversion is rather easy... anyone who wants to PM me i can help in that area.

at any rate, lossless audio isn't some audiophile/elitist state of mind; it's truly the finest-sounding file available... the best way to tell the difference is to drag an mp3 version of a song into Winamp and a .flac/.wav/lossless version as well and do the pepsi challenge.

maybe it doesn't seem to be a big difference to some but i like my audio crispy and clean, not compressed down.

and that's not to say i don't ever listen to audio in mp3 format; i have hellishly long commutes each work day and the iPud saves my sanity bacon (but this is the only instance in which i will convert lossless to mp3).

i won't belabor the point as others have already made clear the distinction between listening to mp3s and trading in that format... trade away in mp3 format; just don't be miffed when you get a noogie to your ribs about it.

  3. I started out in a cover band when I was 15. We did Punk and Metal covers (Sex Pistols, Judas Priest...) A few years later I was in a band that did stuff like Thin Lizzy, CCR, Zeppelin, Stones... We always managed to work in an original or two during the 2nd set. There was a lot of guitar wankery back then. We often did 10-12 minute versions of songs like Gloria, with 3 or 4 guitar solo breaks. Nowadays I barely let a solo last more than 12 bars :).

Bad Apples attempted some of our own material but it was just blatant larceny...

"Original Tune" was really just a ripoff of "Gone Daddy Gone"

"Nice Tits, Bad Breath" was the "sweet emotion" intro and riffs with different lyrics.

we've yet to generate any major label interest but we're undaunted nonetheless.

  4. whatever you say, tom sawyer.

    Dear U.N. Jefferson,

this is a letter to formally apologize for insulting your fragile Tri-Lam sensibilities.

i'll refrain from quipping in the future about frat boys or Phish or Young MC.

    re: TS

even i don't like that song... except for that middle jam part, which they nail every time.

  5. hahaha, why so uppity and defensive?

you're taking shots at me for liking Rush while you name-drop Marvin Young? hope the irony's not lost on you.

it's not like you had a phalanx of S1Ws flanking you during homecoming or anything.

i could go all day on squidly frat b.s. but i think A_Wheel pretty much covered it already, a'ight?

  6. not to split hairs as the mp3 version of 8/24/07 sounds fine but is there a link for that show with all tracks entirely in lossless .wav format?

i've seen in a future age>spiders and sunken treasure in .wav in a different thread... was the rest of that roadcase version ever made available in .wav?

  7. i originally grew up on the jersey shore, where, between springsteen and bon jovi -- and to a lesser degree, Frank Sinatra, and Pat DeNunzio from The Smithereens -- it was a foregone conclusion that we were all destined to be superstar performers.

    demo tape gods abounded..

the shore had and i'm sure still has its share of cover bands, too.

    circa 1983

picture the local roller skating rink doing zero business in the summer and compensating via Battle of the Bands.

eight different bands, all teenagers from neighboring middle schools, all playing a different variety, or wuss-level of 'metal.'

to decide the "winner," after each band played a 20-min set, it got a one minute jam and accompanying cheer to gauge fan response... there was supposedly an "applause meter" -- but no one ever witnessed firsthand a device that gauged decibels... we were on to them.

each band had a 10x20 area to set up their rented P.A. system, a drum riser, whatever.

most just set up amps flat on the floor; perhaps a platform for the drumkit.

the one band i'll never forget.

    Rancient.

yup, Ancient with an R in front of it.

they were terrible but worth watching because they went for the gusto with their designated space and erected a two-story high stage (i am not kidding or exaggerating) which needed a ladder to ascend. It was basically just a big platform up on stilts and bucked and swayed yet miraculously didn't crumple to the floor killing several.

particularly hysterical were their most loyal followers who got right up front and wrenched their necks looking straight up, rockin', rather than take a few steps back.

    Fallen Angel

death metal outfit in the vein of Venom, dudes were like 14, 15 yrs old but the singer was like 40...

should have won it by sheer balls.. the owner of the place had gotten on the mic just as FA was going on and reminded everyone of the strict conduct to be adhered to in this family establishment, etc., and any band that cursed was immediately disqualified, etc.

so of course they designated a guy who sat on the wall behind the drummer, who frequently shouted obscenities into the drummer's overhead boom mic between songs. actually screamed F--U!!!! right as they counted off the first song.

    hysterical.

they went on to become Lethal Aggression (who had attained some minor-league level fame in NJHC circles).

    Exodus

yup. we were Exodus the crappy metal band before Exodus the crappy metal band was Exodus.

i got the name out of the bible. gimme a break, i was 14.

it was the second thing i opened to; Deuteronomy just didn't roll off the tongue.

oh gawd, we played Screaming for Vengeance by Judas Priest and Fast as a Shark by Accept, or we tried to.

i soon thereafter found God [Jerry] while remaining members went on to become heavy metal moondoggies Winged Assassin. but they were dirty, birkenstock-wearin' hippies soon thereafter.

years later (89-91) we reformed except as herb-smoking, blotter-licking bohemians...

just a fun party band.. covers of note were I Want You (She's So Heavy), Come On Pt. 2, Let it Grow.

only non-'metal' band and eventual winner [can't remember the name] played Something For Nothing [Rush], Carry On My Wayward Son and The Ocean and everybody [fans of all the losing bands] booed them... too funny.

  8. I was at these shows as well and I'd say the Hampton run was decent (only "Stir It Up" and the Space->So What->Sugar Mags->Scarlet-Fire second set opener on night 2 was great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npYdfYbnL78) but the Giants Stadium gig is more notable for a lot of douchebags crashing the gates en masse than the tunes that night, unfortunately.

that entire spring '88 run was outstanding (caught five straight shows, 3 Hampton/2 Byrne).

i'm not down on the following spring Warlocks run; i just think those dates overshadow some of spring 88's high spots.

agreed, Space>So What>Sugar Mag>Scarlet>Fire was the pinnacle... Jerry was healthy, i mean, how often can you say you saw GD play six songs before drums?

i'm sure there's far better shows to be envious of, i just hadn't attended any other dates from that year that were/are as good.

    re:Giants Stadium '89

i didn't notice the carnage on night two as i was already inside and made it safely onto the field but know what you're talking about; both shows there were kinda unruly, unfortunately...

the 1st night at Giants Stadium the security was absolutely brutal; i remember as the opening bass chord to shakedown erupted it looked like a gigantic wave of people overflowing onto the field and security was pounding on whomever they could get their hands on... the 2nd night the same yellowjackets appeared to be helping people down onto the field.

i mainly point to night two as being memorable because of the weather and the synchonized bolt of lightning hitting one of the towers literally as the "balls of lightning roll along" lyric was sung.

"hey, get off those towers you hard-ons... i had long hair before any of you jerkoffs.."

    -Larry Fine at Woodstock

i actually gave night2 another whirl to see if i was overrating it but mainly because i haven't heard it in a while.. while it wasn't a 5-star performance this particular show has some decent moments... "you know you're bound to...wind up WET!"

that first set was rock solid (jack-a-roe, tennessee jed), and while it didn't look too good on paper, set2 still sounds pretty sweet, chock full of jerry MIDI (playin'>UJB in particular).. the mini set w/ the Nevilles was better on tape than i remember it in person.
