Congrats on finishing your semester, Kate! I've read both Time Traveler's Wife and the Glass Castle. The Glass Castle is a memoir that can be a bit heavy at times so I don't think it's appropriate for right now. Time Traveler's Wife, on the other hand, would be a perfect treat for you. I loved it and I think you'd enjoy it.

I'll second the rec for The Time Traveler's Wife, especially if you have it on hand. Start reading :)

  2. Also, if you ever need XP, your macbook will come with "bootcamp", which allows you to install and run Windows natively (via dual-boot) on your computer. So the "having to rebuy all your applications" argument is a moot point. OSX, expecially Leopard, is a much nicer alternative than either XP or vista.

True, I haven't bothered to do this though. I bought the Mac version of Office mostly just to see what it was like and I got it for a huge discount. I may end up doing this for Netflix though, as the on-demand movies and shows don't work on the Mac OS. But, the videos have problems on my Windows machine too, so haven't bothered. Waiting for improvements on the Netflix end.

  3. I'm telling everybody money to buy a computer for school. Thought about a new guitar, but I am gonna wait for my income tax check for that I think.

I am gonna get my sister that new Elliott Smith picture book.

I got the Elliott Smith book for my birthday -- an excellent gift for any Elliott fan :thumbup

  4. Keen shoes

oh, and peace on earth please ?

This is a great thread for xmas suggestions, I have no idea what to get gift-wise for my husband.

Oh, and Keens rock! I have 2 pair, one is backup for when my current pair wears out... if they ever do!

As for me, I can't honestly think of anything I want for xmas, so I'll second (or third, etc.) the peace on earth.

  5. I used messenger bags for years to haul my laptop and other stuff to and from school and work -- but then started having neck problems that the one-shoulder bag made worse. Now, I use backpacks. I guess they're not as cool, but damn, they make a huge difference! The weight is evenly distributed across both shoulders and no neck problems. I had Timbuk2 messenger bags, they held up well, but I ended up selling my last one on eBay.

A good place for shopping for the right bag is REI if you have one locally. See them in person and "try them on". Then, go online and buy cheaper (REI's winter sale just ended). eBags is a good place for deals, got my current slingbag (small, just for wallet, phone, hat, keys, etc.) there. If you can't see them in person, make sure and get the measurements, that'll help determine if it's the right size for your jacket and everything else you need to lug around.

  6. We have 3 laptops and 3 desktops in our household. Laptop-wise my husband has a Dell and it's a piece of plastic crap, I have a ThinkPad for work, and I have a MacBook for my personal computer. I LOVE my MacBook. It's very good quality and no Windows issues. They are pricey (but so are ThinkPads, and that was my other choice as I'm rough on my laptops due to travel), but worth it. If you're a student, be sure to find out the current student deals. I got a discount through work, and at the time there was an awesome student deal, but alas, my student days are behind me.

And, yes, almost everyone hates Vista. I have friends who work for the company that makes it ;) and they hate it. Most F500 companies aren't deploying Vista. The majority of Vista sales that made MSFT's earnings and stock price soar were consumer- or OEM-related. Basically, people who "had" to have the new OS and all its problems or computer manufacturers that installed Vista on new machines.

Net is, I have used PCs for 15 years, I bought a MacBook in July, and I haven't regretted my purchase at all. Buy a Mac :thumbup

  7. I have the DVD. But in my infinite laziness, I would still like to be able to just hit play on the remote of my cable box where it is recorded rather than have to get up off of my very lazy butt and put the DVD in.

A kindred soul :cheers I do the same thing, and my husband always questions why I don't just get the DVD... but I like having music on my DVR. That way, when I'm waiting on a long download or something equally mindless, I can watch Austin City Limits or Sunken Treasure on the DVR -- and not have to move my laptop, get out from under the blanket (our house is cold), avoid tripping over the dog, fire up the DVD, switch over to video, etc.

  8. looks great but its not on netflix :(

any idea where i could see this?

Well, there's always your local Blockbuster... but I'm not a fan as they censor films. Another option is buying a copy -- $10.99 new on Amazon, $16.99 for Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi "2 Pack" -- and lots of cheaper options used. Or, find a good independent video rental shop. Too bad Netflix fails on this one, but it's not the first time.

  9. :lol Do many people here not have the DVD?

Most probably do - I do, but I'll probably have it on anyway tomorrow morning because it's easy (yes, that sounds really lazy). I usually have CNBC on since I work from home, and CNBC has info relevant to my job, but this will be a better way to start the day :)

And for those of you who don't have the DVD, it's $16.99 at Amazon right now...

  10. The save option hasn't been working for me.

The "save" option didn't work for me in Safari, but it does work in Firefox (Firefox rules!). Can't speak to IE's capability as I don't use it on my Mac, which is my personal machine (work machine is a Windows-based laptop, but I keep work as separate as possible from life).

I made it to 50 for a brief while -- but I also got to 10,000 words so it's not like it didn't take some effort - and time ;)

  11. Plus, Moes has a frequent buyer card and after 10 punches, you get a free meal. It's also cheaper and you get chips for free.

We don't have Moe's in Washington state, but when I lived on the East coast we did -- and in our area they voided the frequent buyer card because of counterfeit cards... and, of course, I had a free burrito owed to me. It was not honored and it was a "real" Moe's card. So, hope that the people in your area are more honest or Moe's will take away your frequent buyer card privilege!

  12. :mellow ...sorry...I would have thought that I was probably the last person to see this movie.

I never see films in the theatre, I wait for the DVD and watch at home. But, I realize that a lot of people do see the films when they are released, so I avoid dedicated threads to those with spoiler-alerts. But, I also avoid reading any posts that are lengthy about films I haven't seen yet, just in case there are spoilers. In the end, by the time I see No Country for Old Men, any spoilers will have been forgotten :)
