  1. I thought that this game would max out at 10,000 - but I guess it doesn't. I'm going to have to stop before I get carpal tunnel though! Stopping at just over 10K for the day. Will pass this on to others, the totals page is impressive.

  2. > I've always thought that animals was a severely underrated album.

me too, its just the length of Dogs that puts me off. love the 3 different pigs (and those on the wings). pigs on the wing is one of my favourite Waters tracks

It's my favorite Pink Floyd album. Pigs (all 3) are by far the best, but I like listening to the entire album. There are some albums that are worth listening to in full (maybe that should be another thread, "Top 5 Albums to Listen to in Full" - I love my iPod, but I still love full albums). Plus, Dogs, while long, always gets the attention of both my dog and cat, which is amusing :)

  3. sipping on some cheap shiraz at the moment

Nothing wrong with cheap wine, as long as it tastes good! I drink cheap wine on weekdays, and splurge on the weekends. And I stick to whites, mostly Chardonnays because that's what I like, and it's easier to get a good cheap white. For reds, my price point goes way up, so they are an occasional special purchase... last time we bought a case of really expensive reds that we were planning on "aging", we ended up drinking all but one bottle. It's in our basement "wine cellar" (this is just a room in our old unfinished basement, nothing fancy, but it stays at temp) and we're really going to save this one, really...

  4. We're looking into Six Feet Under next

Movies (With exception to highly popular ones)

    State and Main

Kevin Smith movie's (Mallrats, Clerks, etc.)

Anyone know if the TV show The Shield is any good? Or movie The Motel? I'm looking forward to the Once release.

Loved Six Feet Under, although the first few seasons are the best. As with many shows, it went on too long and became too soap-y for me. The Shield is good, although I stopped watching because the releases of the DVDs was sporadic.

State and Main - it's David Mamet, enough said, his writing is among the best

As for Kevin Smith, his new flick Zack & Miri Make a Porno is officially starring (just announced last week) Seth Rogen from Freaks & Geeks, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and SuperBad. Starts filming in January and should be a good one. Just a long wait for those of us who wait for DVD releases!

  5. Saw Planet Terror last night, and thought it had the right mix of gore and humor. I agree that the actresses weren't the best, but isn't that one of the homages to the cheesy 70s movies? Thought Freddy's (El Rey's) choice of vehicle in the chase scene was hilarious, and the gooey corn syrupy blood and puss was great. I love gore for gore's sake! So, I thought it was a fun flick, seeing Tarantino's effort next.

I do have to admit that the real-life affair between Rose McGowan and the director, Robert Rodriguez, kinda makes me ill. So cliche, and he was married for 16 years (ie, pre-fame) and has 5 kids with his soon-to-be ex-wife. Couldn't help but cross my mind during this movie since El Rey was Robert Rodriguez' alter ego.

In the theatre did they show the "coming attraction" advert for "Machete"? That movie needed Machete! It's going to hit the theatres in 2008, an expansion of the promo, directed by Rodriguez:

  6. Asian fast food? What fucking planet are you people on?

No, seriously, I had absolutely no idea Asian fast food existed. That blows my mind/scares me.

Actually, it's the chain thing -- I didn't realize there were "chain" Asian restaurants. South of Seattle there's an Asian mall with a huge grocery store (99 Ranch Market) and lots of mom & pop "fast food" stalls with food court type of seating -- but it's authentic, not chain "fast food". The amount of restaurants and languages spoken is impressive. Looks like some places are up for lease, but I don't foresee a Panda Express ;)

  7. there is no such thing as good Asian fast food.

Have to agree. So many Asian restaurants in the Seattle area, I can pick up authentic food from Japanese ramen (yes, real ramen and it's good!) to Sichuan to Thai to Vietnamese, etc. for less than $10, and in many cases, around $5. My favorite is a sushi combo with soup for $9.50 from the place 2 blocks away... unfortunately they're closed this week! So, it's Pho for $4 from a place that serves home-made cream puffs with each bowl - yum!

And for Mexican, I frequent a taco truck that makes awesome authentic burritos for $4 each.

    I guess there's fast food chains, and there's food that's fast ;)

  8. Great suggestions, and some friendly reminders too! I haven't seen Withnail & I for years, will definitely add that to my list, it's hilarious! I just received Planet Terror via Netflix yesterday, so will see it today or tomorrow. Wholeheartedly second the Polanski flicks.

And, one of my all-time favorites to add, shame on me for leaving it off my original list:

Harold & Maude - one of my "top ten" films of all time (no particular order, it's easier that way), watch at least 3 times a year

  9. As people have mentioned, it's about sound and what you want from a guitar -- if you go the hollow body route (or semi-hollow), go with the best you can afford. I have two hollow bodies, an ES-330 and an ES-335, but both are vintage Gibsons. We don't have any Telecasters, as I'm partial to vintage Gibsons and my husband likes Strats, so can't help with any opinions on the teles, other than play them and see if you like the sound and the feel. As has been mentioned, guitars are very personal choices.

  10. Twice-baked potatoes are my favorite -- nothing like a baked potato with all the fixings mixed in and baked again with a golden brown top!

Oh, and gravy... mmmm ... gravy! Best part of the turkey!

We're trying Oyster Stuffing this year. Found a recipe on Epicurious, but if you have any family favorites to share, let me know. Our last grocery run will be tomorrow, then we're locked down. :)

  11. I've received some great recommendations from others on this board for my NetFlix list. With the writer's strike, I was looking for TV series as well as movies. Since I couldn't find an official thread on recommendations, I figured I'd start one. Tried to categorize as best as possible, but categorizing is subjective as are all recommendations ;)

I had to edit my list way down -- I spend a lot of time watching movies, and I'm sure I've left out a lot of good ones I'll remember later. Looking forward to other members' suggestions :)

Favorite Directors (so any movie by them, list was getting too long... so it's a catch-all category)

    Coen Brothers

    Wes Anderson

    Jim Jarmusch

    Paul Thomas Anderson

    Gus Van Sant

    Comedy

Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright's & Simon Pegg's first movie)

Hot Fuzz (Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg's second movie)

    The Big Lebowski (Coen Bros)

    Rushmore (Wes Anderson)

    Being John Malkovich

    Trainspotting

    Clerks

    Dogma

    Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Serenity (see TV list for Firefly)

    Brazil

    Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro)

    Devil's Backbone (Guillermo del Toro)

    Primer (indie about time travel)

    Dark City

    Donnie Darko

    Horror/Thriller

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (a mockumentary that is a must for any horror fan)

Cabin Fever (Eli Roth's first and best movie)

    Evil Dead series

    High Tension

    Slither (a fun horror flick)

Suspect Zero (an indie that is really well done)

    Drama

    Pi (Darren Aronofsky's first movie)

    Amores Perros (Alejandro Gonz

  12. I had to hold off reading this thread due to PST, but after watching this week's Heroes via DVR, it seemed like an apology to viewers. No "wonder twins" (wow, they are so annoying, I really hope Sylar kills them just to finish their storyline), Issac's paintings didn't fail although there were some cop-outs to make them happen, Hiro realizes the whole time/space issue with changing the past, and Claire is doomed to become like Adam if she keeps cutting off her toes ;)

However, I think it's a total cop-out that major characters cannot be killed off -- Noah Bennett should have died, but because of Claire, he's alive. I like his character because he's a contradiction, but please, let a major character die (ie, not Hiro's dad aka Sulu). Take a note from Joss Whedon, when you care about characters and they can die, and do, it's more personal and the story is better.

Season 1 was fun because it was new and shiny (ok, sorry for the Whedon reference there...). But, then I realized it's just X-Men repackaged, and X-Men is better. I just watch Season 2 because I've invested the time and want to see the resolution. Count me in the camp of waiting for Lost to return, with all its flaws, at least it isn't stealing from a comic/movie series, and it lets characters die as they should. And as soon as Whedon returns to TV with Dollhouse, count me in for all the doomed episodes :)

  13. My husband :wub

My 9 year old Border Collie who still acts like a puppy, and survived surgery for removal of a (thankfully) benign tumor

My crazy cat, who survived 2 surgeries for hip dysplasia, and takes the stairs 5 at a time and flies through the air (did I mention she's crazy?)

Being healthy (I had pneumonia in 2006 and was sick for over 2 months - 2007 was a good year!)

Moving back to Seattle after a short stint on the East coast

A month in India -- one of my top 10 places to visit checked off the list :)

A safe cross-country road trip (my 7th), this time with husband, dog, cat & 4 guitars in the car - crowded, but the only way to move pets and guitars safely

Seeing Wilco and The Flaming Lips in concert

Great music, films, wine, tea, food, and friends

Overall, a good year, I consider myself lucky :)

Wishing the best for everyone in the upcoming new year!

  14. The documentary about the Flaming Lips, "The Fearless Freaks", just started on Sundance West. I'm not sure, but I think Sundance West airs programs at the same time on the East coast (ie, no time shifting for time zones), but I'm not positive. Seen it before, worth watching, even if you're not a big fan.

If you want to catch the whole thing, it's airing again on November 30.

  15. There's been one season of FNL, which is now available on DVD, and the second season is now in first-run on NBC.

I cannot recommend the first season highly enough. The pace is slower than many TV dramas, but you'll still find yourself on the edge of your seat on a regular basis. Emotional without being manipulative, realistic relationships, just beautiful. The storylines are verging on outlandish in the second season, but trust me, the first season is some of the most amazing television you'll ever see.

I'm also a huge fan of Rescue Me, and I know more than one season of that is available on DVD. It's terrifying and harsh and filthy and hilarious. You'll be on the edge of your seat watching the firefighting scenes, and you'll cringe at every personal interaction (these are not healthy people).

Thanks, very helpful review -- I added Season 1 to my Netflix queue, and Season 2 is in the "saved" section, according to Netflix, release date is "unknown". We've watched all the Rescue Me seasons on DVD, just finished them up and of course the cliff-hanger season ending is frustrating because of the wait for the next season to be on DVD. Knowing you liked both is exactly what I was looking for, similar interests, thanks!

  16. Apologies for dropping into this thread without reading previous posts, but I am avoiding spoilers -- have heard great things about Friday Night Lights, and just checked NetFlix and it's on DVD. I had no idea there were 2 seasons on DVD already. I'm assuming this is probably a biased thread, but would you all recommend this show? I'm looking for some good NetFlix suggestions, and need some TV series to fill the void from the writer's strike and upcoming holiday TV season (which is usually repeats and xmas specials). It be helpful to know something like, "if you like x, then you'll like y" or the opposite. Thanks in advance!

  17. Oh, for anyone having problems with the link, my newest version of Firefox kept blocking it as a pop-up. Just copy the link and paste into a new window or tab. I'm a fan of Firefox, but this was the first time it's blocked something that it shouldn't, and meanwhile all week I keep getting ad pop-ups for screensavers! What is wrong with my browser, the latest upgrade was a step backwards!

  18. Serentiy is one of my new favorite movies, I love the dialog in it. So that would be my choice. If I was in the mood to get really confused and be ticked for next couple of days because I couldn't figure out what is going on, than Donnie Darko would be my choice. Darko is the only movie I have ever seen where I get more confused the more times I watch it.

Have you seen Primer? That's way more confusing than Donnie Darko -- I have to get out maps of the time-lines to try and finally figure it out! Love Serenity, I'm a huge Whedon fan, so was a fan of the ill-fated show from the start. If you haven't seen the show, I highly recommend it, especially with the episodes in the right order (Fox didn't air the pilot, and showed the eps out of sequence, dooming it to a fate it didn't deserve).
