  1. Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star)

Elliott Smith - Trouble (Cat Stevens)

    Elliott Smith - Blackbird (Beatles)

Elliott Smith - Jealous Guy (John Lennon)

Elliott Smith - ok, any cover by Elliott is tops for me (sorry, Wilco, but Elliott is my #1)

Elvis Costello does a lot of good covers too -- liked the trade-off of songs between him and Fiona Apple on the VH1 special. Also did some songs with Ben Gibbard and Billy Joe Armstrong, I don't particularly care for Green Day, but the sharing of songs and covers of each other's works was well done. Especially liked the following "trade" of songs:

Elvis Costello - I Know (Fiona Apple)

Fiona Apple - I Want You (Elvis Costello)

Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Oasis) - better than the original

And, I also like the covers that Jeff Tweedy does solo.

  2. Jim Gaffigan is very funny -- he's so pale! I also like Zach Galifianakis -- you can get his DVD on NetFlix. Heard a podcast of him, and was hooked, so I got the DVD. There are lots of good comedians out there that aren't Dane Cook, who's the comedic equivalent of Beyonce or Britney Spears (ie, mainstream and boring). Try Zach Galifinakis, Robert Schimmel, Jim Norton, Demetri Martin, etc. -- even if you don't like these guys, you may discover another comedian that's worth your while and isn't Dane Cook :)

  3. First thought was which "Crash" -- Cronenberg's or Haggis'. Can't go wrong with Cronenberg! Haggis' Crash was ok, but I thought it was a bit melodramatic and the acting didn't warrant the Academy Award nominations that it received -- but the Oscars are a sham anyway. Don Cheadle is in it too (he was mentioned earlier in the thread for Talk to Me).

  4. In Seattle, it's Pagliacci Pizza -- claimed to be "Seattle Style Pizza", but very close to NY style. We usually order the Salumi Spicy Salami pizza, the salami is from Salumi's, which is owned by Mario Batali's father (http://www.salumicuredmeats.com/) and is worth the extra $4. Last night, orders were taking 80 minutes! Sadly, no leftover cold pizza this morning :no

  5. This is a great thread for filling my NetFlix queue... and catching up on some old favorites! I have all next week off to do nothing but play music and watch movies :D

    Recent views:

The 300 -- did not live up to the hype, thought it was boring, big disappointment

Ratatouille -- ok, good animation, but not worth 97% on RottenTomatoes, again a disappointment

This Filthy World -- if you're a John Waters fan, you'll like it (I enjoyed it, my husband read discussion boards throughout)

28 Weeks Later -- incredibly frustrating movie, stupid people, stupid choices

Hot Fuzz -- recently re-watched, best comedy of 2007 for me, needed something rewarding after so many disappointing films

And, now rewatching the box set of Firefly -- with the writer's strike and such a disappointing TV season, I'm relying on old favorites to fill the void...

  6. Reading your story made me sick to my stomach! I've had a couple of hollow bodies shipped to me, and was lucky -- one was a 66 Gibson ES-330, my baby... But, I did have an ES-335 delivered in person because the dealer happened to be in the area and hand delivered it. After your experience, I'll be willing to make the drive necessary for my next vintage purchase! Good to hear that the dealer was willing to work with you, although Nashville is too far a drive for me (Seattle) -- but LA would be a possibility, I'll have to check out Voltage. Enjoy your new addition!
