  1. It is a bit strange of a release given their inability to be captured in the studio compared to live performance. It does sound like a nice collection to have all in one place but like prior poster it is hard to get excited about studio versions of songs already on albums. They actually did release singles but were generally so unhappy with how their studio albums came out that they really did nothing to ever promote singles releases and my understanding is it was all handled by record companies and part of the recording distribution package. Personally, i will stick with the live releases as they never disappoint.  Feeling old as the 40th anniversary of my first dead show approaches April 29, 1977 at the Palladium in NYC.

  2. Where's everyone staying for Winterlude? I almost rented a condo, about the same price as a hotel but not as close. I'll be working in room for 5 days so wanted something descent. I was going to go through Hotwire but I hate not being able to cancel and not know for sure what I'm getting. I know that can generally be figured out, in fact I have gotten what I expected most of the time. Honestly, with the extra Hotwire fees then having to pay for wifi at some places it's not that much better of a deal.

I got a room at the Hotel Monaco about 2 blocks away from the theatre. Good rates, winter sale $119/night. I reserved a room the other day then they had a flash sale yesterday that was even cheaper, I think $104 for a deluxe king. I opted to cancel reservation and upgrade to river view room with the sale rate. I ended up paying only slightly more than a room that would face a wall or parking garage. Anyway, nice place and a bit cheaper than the Wit. Keep an eye on the flash sales! Also if you do consider the hotel, sign up for the loyalty reward program or whatever. You'll get free wifi and a credit for the minibar. I love going to Chicago this time of the year, cheap hotels! The same room in March would be over $400!

thanks much for info on the Monaco. Just booked river view room too and canceled my more expensive hotel wit (a very nice hotel too) reservation.

  3. Recording of JRAD's 12/30/16 show that includes Hoodoo Voodoo, a song that Joe and Marco used to cover when they were in a band with Mike Gordon of Phish. Nice to see it get jammed out a bit for 7 minutes in a Viola Lee sandwich:

I was at that JRAD show at the Capitol theater in NY and was totally surprised/psyched when they started playing it and I believe the first time they played it. It was really good. Had a nice double shot here skiing in vermont yesterday as the lift we were getting on was playing China Cat and as we were getting on the next song was Pot Kettle Black.

  4. I saw one of the Dead's  Fall 1980 Radio City Music Hall shows on PPV at the Orpheum Theater in Boston.  They later turned the footage into the Dead Ahead DVD.

That was 10/31/1980.  I went the last 3 nights. Also love the orpheum and saw some good shows there when in college including Garcia Band 2/15/80. Good stuff.

  5. Just responding to topic about capital theater in passaic nj. There are so many videos because yes there were video screens on both sides of the stage even back in the 70's and even though theaters of that size, like the cap in port chester ny today, do not have screens. I saw Jerry Garcia Band there in 78 and Kingfish as well. famous springsteen 78 shows filmed there and available as well. Never saw the Dead there but did see them at the palladium in Nyc in spring of 77 and at englishtown nj also in 77 as my first jersey show. Love talking dead on the wilco site, two of my all time favorites.

  6. Ok, this is my problem. I should state right off, that it is the sort of "problem" that will cause no tears to be shed by those reading.

My wife, my dog and I are doing the Canadian snowbird thing this winter. Driving down by car and spending months in Arizona and California. We plan to leave Ontario driving south on Dec. 29th. We have various airbnb's set up for January and February, so we have flexibility for March and April.

We were planning to be back home for the middle of April.

Then yesterday Wilco announced two nights performing at Massey Hall Toronto in the middle of March.   They are trying to break my heart. I have seen them multiple times at Massey Hall - fantastic every time.

Should we plan to abandon sunny California and head back to Toronto for the middle of cold snowy March to see Wilco?

Should we plan instead to head to Knoxville Tenn. Big Ears Festival to see Wilco in March and still be in southern climes?

If we end up elsewhere in March, we have never missed a Solid Sound and will be enjoying Wilco in June...  guide us, wise Wilco folks, guide us....

Wait until the full tour is announced so you can make a plan. Maybe something out west will be added in early March and you could see that instead of heading home. Visiting NY for the Wilco run is another option. Personally, i was planning to see a few Green Day shows up in Canada in March and now they overlap with the Wilco Beacon shows so will stay home. Another "problem" not deserving in sympathy. I do plan to go to Massey and loved seeing the two shows there in 2011.

  7. It just hit me that the new run of shows announced yesterday are billed as part of the Schmilco tour, as opposed to the four night run in Chicago being billed as Winterlude. I guess what I'm thinking is that even though the newly announced dates include multiple consecutive nights at one theater, we shouldn't expect as much set list variation at Schmilco shows as at Winterlude shows. I don't think the difference in the names of the shows is accidental.

That could well be the case as a general matter, but i am pretty confident that they will really mix up the setlist during a 4 night run at the same venue in NYC. Time will tell and only wish we didn't have to wait 4 months for an answer!

  8. Wow, 4 shows at the Beacon and right here in NYC. Contrary to earlier post, i don't think getting tickets with 4 shows will be tough, but reserved seating show so hard to get the best ones. Psyched to make a return trip to fabled Massey Hall and so glad it is a 2 show run like in 2011.

  9. I think the below is correct setlist from the show last night but might be missing one. Hoped bbop would be doing a report as they are great to read after seeing the show and savior like when not. Fabrique is a one level club with a couple of foot riser at mid floor. As to size it was sort of like Hammerstein or Terminal 5 in NYC but no upper levels and a bit narrower than the former and deeper than the latter. No poster being sold. Not well organized in somewhat typical/comical Milanese fashion as two lines one for tix holders and one for will call but they switched which was which 30 minutes before doors and then had it wrong when doors opened with Songkick will call back where tix holder line was and ticketsone will call at the other.

I recall Bowie/Matheny This is Not America played over PA a bit before the show started. From prior bbop reports the Jeff comments were very similar in appreciating being able to play music and being overseas, we outnumber them, apologetic about a catastrophic outcome and that Americans would make it up to the world at some point. Very heartfelt commentary and then looked to the positive side rightly so that we have to not sit back and hope leaders/others would do the right thing -- that everyone has to repurpose themselves and take responsibility more personally and directly for protecting the weakest in society and the environment. Jeff's poignant thoughts will hopefully be the result of current protests which remind me of Mr. Strummer The fury of the hour anger can be power if you know that you can use it. After a bit of venting, folks have to harness the frustration and anger toward the greater good (easier said than done).

I thought the show reflected the somber undercurrent a bit and so a less joyous feel at times (or just me) and at times fierce like diring Impossible Germany and Spiders --Jeff not taking any apathy and singing the guitar part until the crowd was loud enough.I really felt his emotion during Reservations in light of the new ones so many of us are feeling. I dont recall any particular banter other than when encouraging the person with a large Airline to Heaven sign to put it down so it would not block anyone's view and that he had made a mental note of the request (alas, it was not to be). Spiritually fulfilling show and William Tyler did a nice set but no reprise of his duties on Cali Stars).

  10. Thanks so much for posting about the show and including the video links. It is very interesting how crowds can really vary and how the crowds in different countries do different things. You could really see how much the band enjoyed that singing along to the Impossible Germany jam and to the fan who really could play guitar. Happy that folks in Rio like to film so we can see some of the South American shows as it looks like there is YouTube of every song from the show. It sounded like Jeff even said thank you before starting the first song as the crowd was so loud when the band took the stage. A Wilco starved crowd for sure! Great for them, but come back soon for more USA shows !

  11. Fun show. Personally, i was never closer even though we have been on the rail many times. Such a small venue and from front row Jeff in arm's reach. All seemed in a good mood and were gracious in signing for all. Such a fun home court show after traveling recently for Madison, Minneapolis, Chicago and 3 in SF. Nels always seems so at ease at home. Im sure they will have a blast in South America and we at least hope to make some of Europe.

  12. Not really a show, but the taping was pretty cool. Had not been to the Ed Sullivan Theater since 2011 when Wilco played on Letterman. For Colbert, they played Someone to Lose; a short and sweet version and got the thumbs up for no need to do it again (too bad!). It was fun to see them bopping to the house band during the commercial break before performing as Nile Rodgers was sitting in and leading the house band. The show opens with a comedy bit with Colbert and Tweedy that was pretty funny. Certainly get a bit more of a show tomorrow at Rough Trade.

  13. If you are in NYC you might want to request tickets for the taping at 4:15 pm today. You can do so through the Late Show website. I figured what the hell and signed up yesterday and was put on waitlist and got an email a bit ago saying i was in off the waitlist. Wonder what Schmilco tune they plan to play.

  14. Never a doubt in my mind that Ripple was a passing of the baton (my fantasy perhaps) and given all the Grateful Dead history and imagery at the Cap, i think it also accounted for them putting the audience to the test to see if they knew the words. I also had run into Nels at Tweedy at Bam in September so knew he was returning to the Cap 11/1 to play with Phil, and even though i would have been there at my home court venue anyway, that was a huge thrill all around.

  15. Thank you so much for so well capturing and encapsulating the facts feel and flow from the show last night.i need the reviews when unable to attend, and appreciate them equally when im there. Just when i thought the drain of the posting duty was a tad in play, or maybe it was just me as i ate up night 4 offering At Least That's What You Said, the above review -- particularly noting the joy so evident on band member faces--actually reminded me of the Capital Theater 2014 night 3 closer of the fan sung Ripple when Jeff told the crowd You Nailed It! Thanks again and safe travels be they long or short to all of our daily line (and thus stage bound) compadres. An early flight somehow seems a bit better sporting my spanking new green Schmilco socks!

  16. "Friends don't let friends freebird". What a fun show and great crowd. Spiders without Jeff needing to ask people to clap or even doing a single hand clap to get it going the crowd was all over it. Jeff tried out a couple of new poses with hands on hips and chest out. Band seemed super relaxed and having as much fun as the front house pogo-ers.All that and a free Fillmore poster on the way out!

  17. So... pretty much the same as Seattle and Portland. Kind of disappointed that all the sets on the tour have been VERY VERY similar.

What bbop said. I know the perfect cure if you think not enough variation among setlists; just go to one show per tour and you won't suffer a single repeat and refrain from looking at setlists from other shows. Be thankful for the great shows they put on at a way reasonable price; and since the Schmilco tour proper started the sets have opened up quite a bit and will no doubt continue to do so, and we at least still had a blast at summer shows that were rather static.  "A typical city involved in a typical daydream, hang it up and see what tomorrow brings"
